And what would make you say that? Birds again played well especially at the defensive end. Just had some tough trips where balls were half way down the cylinder and did not fall. This was a 4 to 5 point game most of the way. End result was from Highlands fouling and Boone converting at the line. Effort was excellent again. Feel this team has turned the corner a little bit this past week.

Boone now 11-9. I said if they get 15 wins this year McQueary should be coach of the year. The rest of the schedule is tough so I don't know if they will get there. Nice job to Coach McQ and Boone on putting another one in the win column.

HHS sleeps walks out of the gate again and falls behind by 8 in the first 2 minutes. I hope the scouting report listed Brendan Stanley as the individual to stop. Sure didn't look like it to start. Brendan had 11 in the first quarter before he waslocked down for the rest of the game. He may have gotten 20+, but not near the looks he was getting in the first quarter.

 

HHS battles back to within 5 before halftime. Boone up 25 to 20 at the intermission.

 

With under 4 minutes to play HHS scores to draw with 3 at 37 to 34. Witte makes a steal on the inbounds. Down 3 with the ball and just a few minutes to play. Empty trip for the Birds, and the Rebels convert on their next possession. Empty trip for the Birds, Rebels convert. Forced shot for the Birds, fouling begins and the Rebels bury the majority of their free throws. A close game balloons to a 16 point lead in a matter of minutes.

You mean besides scoring only 42 points?

This game figured to be played in the 40's. The only reason Boone got 54 was the ability to knock down multiple free throws in the last 2 minutes (9 or so).

 

Neither team gets easy baskets. Everything comes off sets, and if you don't shoot well, points are hard to come by.

 

To Clyde's point, coming off the win over Campbell County, I hoped for a quicker start. A chance for 2 in a row against N Ky competition. The slow start is what was most disappointing to me.

42, 82, 102 it does not matter as long as you are in the game and have a chance to win in the 4th quarter.

The only issues I had with the game was not keying on their best player at tipoff and not isolating Witte on the much smaller and weaker Melzer. When they fed him in the 3rd Qtr he was successfull scoring the ball. Melzer was guarding him the entire game and too many posessions were geared at trying to get Houliston or Turner open for a 3. You gotta recognize a mismatch and feast on it until they adjust.

 

Stanley is a very nice player for BC. He is quick and shoots well.

 

The effort was great last Night, like Stinky said after Witte scored to cut the lead to 3 and then stole the inbounds it looked to be a great opportunity. I think they missed an open layup with some light contact and the rest was history.

Boone just does things they are suppose to do. They run their sets, get easy buckets underneath and usually don't do a whole lot of stupid stuff. This goes back to the coaching. Great job by their staff.

Melzer is a solid handle at the PG position as well.

noticed last night that HHS does not have a "true" PG. Why do the Birds make Witte work so hard to just get up court and into the offense? The guy inbounding the ball had no defender pressuring him. He would inbound the ball to Witte, who's being dogged by #20 all over the floor, and then run down court. Does that man not know how to set a pick? Or bring True up just over half court and set a pick. A good hard pick by True would have had the much smaller #20 at least looking over his shoulder. When your PG is NOT a PG, maybe the staff could arrange some help for him so come 4Q there's something left in the tank?? There's no help on the bench. And did a HHS player play JV and then START varsity? And if this is correct, is that allowable?

With 2 backup PG's out with the same type shoulder injury (Hinkel and Buten) it makes it tough. Witte played the 4 the first 15 games and now is handling the point. He will do whatever the team needs him to do to put them in a better position to win. If its seeing the floor and hitting the open man in transition, grabbing a key rebound, whatever. I thought he had plenty of gas in the tank and never turned it over bringing it up the floor. In most cases you want your PG isolated and you clear the floor. However, it was quite noticeable that Witte could have doubled his point output if they would have set more high screens for him or posted him on the block. He started the game scoring 5 of their first 10 points but then relegated him to be the passer who then goes to the other side of the floor. I'm not saying he is the best option offensively on the floor by any means but last night was a wasted opportunity to exploit that mismatch.
