well if you want to play the regional numbers game then since coach dean came to powell in 00' lets see the results of dean, melton, and wood.

05= Dean(Regional Finals) Melton(Regional Semis) Wood(did not appear in region)

04= Dean(Regional Finals) Melton(did not appear) Wood(did not appear)

03= Dean(Regional Semis) Melton(Regional Finals) Wood(did not appear)

02= Dean(Regional first round) Melton(Regional first round) Wood(Regional Semis)

00= Dean(Regional Finals) Melton(did not appear) Wood(Regional Semis)

All of this is assuming both coach melton and coach wood were still in those respected school since 00'. As far as i can see coach dean has a better resume in the regional tournament than both of these coaches. And if this has nothing to do with the past then what has coach hammonds done in the past god knows how long???? So like i said coach dean top 3 in the region. :thumb:

 

I know it has been a long time since Hammonds has had a team to go to a regional final, or to win a regional title. His team did win the 55th last year and upset a very good Lee County team, and I don't want to hear about the 8th grader pitching that game, the rest of the starters were on the field, it doesn't matter.

 

What Hammonds has done in the past is to take his teams to semi-state finals, been in the state championship tourney, and has had a few boys go onto play on the college level and two that were looked at to go pro, but they chose another path. He has a few players, right now, that may be college bound.

 

I'm not knocking Dean, he's a good coach, but to make it as one of the best, you better have more than just regional titles. That's not going to cut it.

Coach Wood and his teams in the 14th would have won at least 1, maybe 2 regional titles. You must forget he has played in the tenth region and had to beat Clark and Montgomery just to get to the regional tourney. Also do you think Powell would have made it to the regional tourney every year just because of Coach Dean if they had to play Hazard or PCC in the first round of the district like Leslie did? I will say again,Powell has been winning district titles and regional runner ups for 3 decades so that is nothing new for that program and Coach Dean done nothing any different than Coach Combs at Powell, Coach Childers at Powell, and Coach Collins at Powell. I agree that Woods success in the 14th is yet to be determined so I will grant you that. However,Dixon,Combs, and Meehan have all won titles in that 6 years so he is in no way ahead of them and the 2 decades of success at KCC in no way puts him ahead of Hammonds. Just something for you to think about.

You are right about the player. Still, if the kid was a stud before he went into HS , he had to be coached.

You are partially right. Those three years were Powell's only hiccup over the past 30 years. Dean still did nothing at Powell that was'nt being accomplished prior to him arriving on the scene with the exception of those dreaded 3 years. Dean may be a decent coach but to put him in the top 5 of the 14th is a real stretch. :walk:

I am a Dean fan but I have known him since he was a kid. Of course I think he is one of the best coachs in the region, however I do understand where Kids Fan is coming from, let him coach a few more years and win the big one and then we will say he is on top of the list.

Bryan Dean is easily one of the top 5 coaches. Not only was he winning district titles, but he was always a contender to win the region. Before Dean's days Powell wasn't contenders to win the region. To say that he is not a top 5 coach, you must have a grudge or something. I would love for him to coach my kid. He is a great coach and deserves the credit. In the next couple of years everyone will see how good of a coach he is once he gets the Letcher Central program going strong.

Regional runner up 5 times in the 80's, 4 times in the 90's. Had won consecutive district titles from 1977 to 1986 and from 1988 to 1995. Powell has always been in contention for a regional title. Top 6 maybe but top 4 or 5 doubtful. If he can win a regional title with the largest school in the 14th I will concede that he moves up a notch. No grudge, I am just asking for someone to prove to me that he can be put ahead of coaches who have won regional titles in the ever competetive 14th. I will listen to the debate over rather he should be above Melton or Wood. That is still undecided but ahead of Hammonds, Meehan, Dixon and Combs, NOT A CHANCE.

i did make an argument for him to be over coach Hammonds but never Meehan Dixon or Combs nobody on this post was saying that he should be put over those coaches. It is just a matter of time before he breaks through and wins the big one as you say. It is obvious you know absolutely nothing about the situations you act like you seem to know about. Based on your comments of a fired coach is absurd and so far from the truth that you can't even imagine. I find humor in the fact that this is a public opinion forum and folks just like you are OK with it's content as long as it doesn't affect you and yours. As for you being above all of this you have some nerve to bring the name of a young man into this that has nothing to do with post, so to act as if you are so far above the ranting as you called it is hypocritical. I will stand on my own opinion based on the facts as I know them to be the truth and not gossip as you have based your comments on. Can't believe all this is brought up again. He left Powell County to go to the biggest school in the 14'th region as Kids Fan stated. Who wouldn't, if you wanted an upgraded position. Lets all just leave it at that and get over it, baseball season is almost here!!
