The next really good coach in the 14th will Be Varney at Powell. Very studious and has been a key member of the Hazard coaching staff.

I agree Varney will be a great coach. If the team and program will allow him to coach they will have a very good program and will continue to be a contender for the region.

Agreed. Coach Varney just needs to garner the support that was lost the last 2 or 3 years. He is definately the man to do that. We need to make sure he stays at Powell and he will win the big one in time. We wish him nothing but the best. I don't think he will be a good coach, I think he already is. Just wondering what facts you are basing your opinions on. I know he was an assistant coach at Hazard, we all know that doesn't prove anything, ecspecially when you are 1 of 4 assistants. ????

I am sure he is capable of becoming a good coach. If he keeps the support he has In Powell County and leaves the supporters you call "lost over the last 2-3 years...........LOST, then he will succeed. I am pretty sure Varney has already figured that out in Stanton! Coach Varney just needs to click with his team and not worry about the so called "supporters or non-supporters"......and from what I have heard from down the road, his Seniors are NOT on the wagon with him :(

You must be from Louisville or Cincinnati because in a community of 14000 people total you need the support of everyone. I think Coach Varney called most of the pitches the last 2 or 3 years with Hazard which proves to me he can coach. I don't believe he was the bp assistant. I also have confidence in his ability to get along with the young men he is coaching and garner their respect and not just to fear him. I think you have some really bad information and are truly under estimating Chris Varney.I will agree that he may have a little trouble getting his seniors to buy in his program but like every other program those kids have been used to a different system and style. Changing them to his style will add to my beliefs that he is already a good coach or at least as good as we have had. JMO and time will tell. He has his hands full because the well wasn't left very full ( I mean a lot of underclassman who have little to no varsity experience). Bad information and lack of facts leads to a lot of problems. Unless you are from Powell Co. and know the history of the past 6 or 7 years, your comments are purely opinions and based on your comments they are certainly not based on fact.

Sorry to step on your toes Kids Fan, didn't mean it to be a slap in the face. Just didn't know if Coach Varney had much other baseball coaching experience or what is role was in Hazard. EVERYONE on here knows how you feel about the sacred Powell County Baseball program, don't take others opinions straight to heart

No problem. Just really have a strong love for the program and get a little offensive about it at times. I enjoy the interaction. We will chat again soon I am sure. :thumb:

I agree. That's a big change for those young men but I believe Coach varney has won them over. Good luck to the Pirates.:thumb:

That's great! I really hope these guys come together and give it there all this year. I know that they respected Coach Dean and was used to his style. I love watching Muncie play and would hate to see his last year go by in a poof!

Hammonds is overrated. He was blessed with some of the best talent in the state in his glory years. What has he done since?

He competes every year. May not have the student base he had 15 years ago but he is never someone you want to play in the first round of a regional tourney. Kids are always ready to play and well managed. Gets good fan and parental support. Good support from the community and the administration. JMO

37-82 31% winning percentage, doesn't look like too much competing to me.

 

These records are from KHSAA. I know they are not complete, but I don't think a complete record would change the percentage much

I have to admit that I am a little surprised by the records. Who do they play? Records can be a little deceiving in the mountains if you don't play an array of talent.
