Isn't Coach Beatty's point the same many use to discount Tom Brady's success? I've seen many a discussion that Brady is the product of the Patriot's system and wouldn't be successful on another team.

If you want to say someone is a product of a system then that's one one thing. The problem stems from saying he would have been a "below average" QB had it not been for the system. No basis for that unless you mean not as many Super Bowls. So Dan Marino would be "below average" if that was the intent.

You'll pardon me if I fail to use some BGPers who claim that Brady is a below average QB as evidence.

 

Whoever says that simply isn't watching with two open eyes.

Well in all fairness, I think he was talking about the system more than anything else. without Bill Walsh's offense Joe Montana may not be considered one of the all time greats and I think it's a fair statement. I don't think Joe would of been as succesful aif he played for the Lions of the 80's.

USA Today came out with their 30th anniversary high school football team. It was based upon the players as high school players and not as college or pro.

Not saying I agree or disagree with Beatty but how does a resume of being a high school coach make him an expert on NFL caliber talent?

The fact that Steve Young came in and had better numbers than Montana would seem to strengthen his argument if he said that Joe was overrated. I don't know that he'd ever be below average unless he was drafted to a team like the Old Raiders w/ a vertical passing game, but w/ a worse offensive line. The West Coast certainly played to Joe's strengths.
