January 14, 201313 yr In that case you are ready to step up to Basil. You want to graduate from the college level bourbons and on to yuppy standards. Your friends will think you are cool and ultimately they will start buying Basil. By this point you need to be drinking it strictly on the rocks with no awkward grimaces to let them think you are still cool. I would go Basil and keep around the Bookers for "special occasions". In a few more years start investing in some aged Pappy Van Winkle that becomes your "special occasion" bourbon. Beautiful post
January 14, 201313 yr Has anyone tried Jim Beam's Devil's Cut. I've been wanting to try it but have not as of yet. I'd like to hear your thought's if you have.
January 15, 201313 yr Author With that additional info I'd go for a bottle of Blanton's. Also, if you are drinking Beam, ET (not a bourbon btw), or VOB on the rocks then this will taste like paradise. I actually have a bottle of Early Times bourbon. The only reason I bought it is because I had never seen it before.

Like most things flying under the Jim Beam label, it's more about the advertising than the quality. The aforementioned Jim Beam brands they don't advertise (Booker's, etc.) are all much better.

Really smooth. Doesn't even need ice.
January 15, 201313 yr I was able to procure some Rip Van Winkle as well as some Pappy Van Winkle over the holidays. I've been sipping on the Rip but I've put the Pappy up for special occasions.

January 16, 201313 yr Lower end price, try Buffalo Trace or 1792. Mid range, try Maker's or Woodford. Higher end, Jefferson's or Pogue. Best that's hard to find - Pappy Van Winkle. I forgot about 1792, another really good bourbon. While I like Woodford, I just think there are better bourbons at its price range. The bourbon named after the baptist preacher that some say invented bourbon (I cannot remember his name at the moment) is a good bourbon. For those of you who want your bourbon at lower prices, many people in a thread a few months ago praised Benchmark. I need to give it a try. Another inexpensive but nice bourbon is Old Forrester. I have heard several people say the receipe for Old Forrester and Woodford are very similar but Woodford extended aging gives it a smoother taste. I have no idea if this rumor is true, just throwing it out there.

January 18, 201313 yr I would suggest the following "graduation" bourbons: Maker's 46 Basil Hayden Booker's Jim Beam Devil's Cut Blanton's
January 18, 201313 yr Some random thoughts: Considering the price Benchmark is awesome. I don't care for 1792 at all. It is my least favorite bourbon. Basil Hyden may be my favorite but it will set you back. Devil's Cut is really good but also a little pricey. Bookers is really nice. Don't care much for Woodford. I like Wild Turkey 101 too.
