Two really good teams...

 

Good chance Holmes will be 25-0 heading into the NewCath game in February.

 

I would not want to draw Cooper in the Regional Tourney.

 

With 100% healthy Nick Seibert hopefully. But if he is out a month, as been rumored, I doubt it. Should be a good game nonetheless.

Disappointing crowd for 2 of the top 5 teams in the region. Decent but not what I expected.

I hope everybody washed their hands after the game, this flu strain going around is deadly.

At Holmes.

A few thoughts..

 

- Holmes and Cooper both played hard for four quarters.

- Cooper gets the "charge" call on them about 10 times a game and most are questionable at best. Maniacci was bowled over and not called on Holmes.

- One ref I believe was Drew Mays (Ryle player) dad. Non-district game but IMO should not do any 33rd district opponents game just to leave any doubts.

- Third quarter Holmes seemed to get 5 turnovers on Cooper and fast break layups off couple of Cooper reserve guards. Went from 2 pt to 8-9 pt lead.

- Maybe just bad break but early in game Morgan goes down while Cooper has ball on offense. They play for 10-15 seconds as as McNeil buries a 3, the refs blew the whistle to get Morgan off the court. Shot doesn't count.

- Bolden handles the ball well but thought Cooper did pretty good job on him.

- Holmes won the game at the FT line. Very solid there. They made 16 to Cooper's 4!!!

- I actually left the gym thinking if these teams meet 10 times, Cooper wins 6. Just my opinion. Cooper would need to keep Morgan on the court and have Maniacci's ankle get back where he can run and jump.

 

Good regular season game between two solid teams.

 

1. Both charges on Cooper in the 4th quarter were legit calls. The first call Hathorn absolutely bowled over Englemon, who was set for a good 2 or 3 seconds. The one on Shelton wasn't even close. He got the rebound, lowered his shoulder in to Englemon to clear space and ran him over. Good call on both. I do agree the one where Maniacci got the foul called him could've gone either way but it did still look like he was sliding in to position. I seem to remember Holmes having 3 or 4 charges called on them as well. Englemon goes to the rim very hard and often is called for a charge.

 

2. You can't make an excuse for Holmes getting turnovers off "Cooper reserves." Those kids are players. Holland is tough and one of the best 6th man in the region. And I believe Holmes had "reserves" in during that run as well as Herndon and Hill were on the floor.

 

3. Bolden played the last 2:52 and all of the 4th quarter on a bum knee. He has a deep knee contusion. Definetly wasn't 100%, which is why you didn't see him attacking as much. I do think Cooper did a good job defensively on him but Holmes simply wasn't looking for shots most of the 3rd and 4th quarter because Booher was having them run offense to keep the ball out of McNeil and Collins' hands.

 

4. The free throw disparity was because Holmes attacks the rim, while Cooper was settling for jumpers...hence Holmes being 12/13 from inside the arc in the first half, while Cooper was 10-17. Cooper also took 16 treys in the game compared to Holmes' 12...8 of those being in the first half. Holmes was 6/8 first half from the line, 10/12 2nd half. They only took 4 three's in the second half after the rough first half.

 

Lastly, I don't think Cooper wins 6 out of 10 against Holmes. All games would be close, but McNeil and Collins were the only ones who hurt Holmes last night. You have to have more than 2 scorers to beat Holmes and I felt like Holmes' front court was better than some people were thinking in the predictions thread:

 

Holmes front court (Englemon, Chames): 15 pts, 19 rbs

Cooper front court (Maniacci, Hathorn, Shelton): 13 pts, 17 rbs

 

I will say this, I wouldn't want to see Cooper in the semi's at region as a Holmes fan. Much rather have to deal with them in the finals. They are as good as advertised defensively.

I guess Pouncy shouldn't ref any since he has ties to most of the kids from AAU. O'Hara is an NCC grad, no way should he be a ref in the 33rd. Knollman did the Boone/St.Henry game last night and I think he has young kids in Boone county school system. All are excellent refs. Andy Mays is an excellent ref. We are lucky to have some good ones in the 9th region.

And no disrespect to Cooper, but if Cooper and Holmes play 10 times, Holmes wins 7 of them.

The others don't have a current kid playing in school. AAU coaches have kids at several schools and they aren't "his" kid.

 

MY opinion. Feel free to disagree. No big deal. Regular season game. Both teams solid.

Very good game and had the makings of a intense finish but Holmes did what they were supposed to do and knocked down key free throws down the stretch. I won't complain about the 19-7 free throws shot as while the Jags did shoot several threes they did get to the basket enough to shoot more that 7 free throws, it is what it is. One thing I will complain about is the missed traveling calls, there where at least 5 I counted.

 

Big game from Chames and I think that was the difference as well. No excuse but Maniacci shouldn't have played most likely with the bad wheel but gave a good effort. Bolden is very good but I thought Morgan did an excellent job while he guarded him only giving up about 6 pts while guarding him directly and giving up 0 fg's in the second half. Bolden had 12 at the half and 5 free throws in the 2nd half but he IS the best PG in NKY hands down. These are two very good teams and either could beat one another on any given nite.

 

I hope all the players get well soon as these illnesses are killing these teams. My hope is that these two teams meet in the finals of the 9th Region tourney as I feel comfortable with both making some noise at Rupp and representing NKY very well.

Of course I didn't count the attendance, but I thought that there was a decent turn out. I think that it's just a matter of perspective...

That's always been an issue at Holmes. They didn't even have a student section for the Holy Cross game. Students were there, but just spread out.

I have lived in Covington and Boone Co. and have never felt uncomfortable at Holmes. Let us "not go there".

With the Obama tax increases on everyone's first of the year paycheck - maybe working class peeps couldn't afford to go to the game1

Holmes is just as safe as CCH if you ask me, I've never had one problem from the Holmes fans since I've attended games. That's the second off the wall comment by TOG poking at the Cooper program, so it easy to ignore. It's the mommies at CCH that we're concerned about :laugh:: I was not able to attend the game at Holmes; not out of fear, but sick kid. Word is that it was a good one, and I'm hope the fans that did attend thinks so as well.
