Both teams were talking trash throughout. At one point, AFTER THE T, Markel McClendon was clapping in Holmes players faces and saying "let's go" and the refs let it go. If they are going to call a T on Palmer for saying "scoreboard" they need to do the same for Markel.

Bolden had 9 assist to 4 turnovers tonight.

Holy Cross played very well in the second half but I felt the mental mistakes and unforced turnovers by Holmes with a huge lead were what allowed Holy Cross to get confidence and get back in the game. Holmes simply didn't attack the zone the way they did in the first half. Englemon and Bolden were the only ones who really took it to Campbell in the second half.

 

Biggest difference was Holmes didn't score enough in the second half to set up their press and get turnovers or force quick shots like they did in the first half. Holy Cross had no answer for Holmes' press when they were able to set the press up and speed the tempo up.

 

As for Campbell, he played very physical down low. I find it hard to believe he picks up 2 fouls in the first quarter but didn't foul at either end the rest of the game. Such is life though and as stated, the officials were consistent with their no calls. This comment is more of a compliment to Mr. Campbell as I felt if Holmes could've forced a third foul on him and got him back to the bench, this game isn't within 30 points going in to the 4th. I was surprised by the way Chames, Hill, and Arnold played against him. All three showed much more toughness than I thought they had and Englemon for the most part did what he wanted within 10 feet.

 

Very good game to watch. It's a shame one of these two teams might be left out of the region tournament. That #1 seed in the district is going to be crucial.

 

You know Walter, I thought they penetrated well but went at Campbell when the refs were not going to call anything (not a complaint, just the way they called it). I thought they could have penetrated kicked it out and drilled the 3's. They only took 2 I believe the 2nd half and Coston and Bolden made them. This team can really shoot and, unless they are not falling, fire away. Campbell's presence whether he blocks it or not is huge. It was obvious the 'dogs were going to attack him no matter what. In the first half they just moved the ball Palmer makes his 3's, they press and get steals and really played up tempo. 36% shooting does cause them problems when they can't press as you said. Holmes still was up 8-12 points until the last 3 minutes when they just simply got careless and HC got momentum. Lots of contact away from the ball not called really frustrated Bolden and Palmer in the 2nd half. Hey, if they don't call it, I'd do it also. First time I've seen Plamer lose his cool, Bolden needs to handle the off the ball stuff better. It affects his play, although he came up big in the clutch. I agree with you on Englemon, he played smart and well tonight. The biggest thing in holding Campbell to too nuch offensive damage was Holmes abilty to limit 2nd shots. They rebounded well.

Holy Cross didn't make a whole lot of shots and long misses is like an outlet in transition for Holmes.

 

Holy Cross mixed up there defense in the first half which was a little two three, man to man and then went to a triangle and two with one guy shading a shooter.

 

In the second half, Holy Cross attacked the basket a little more aggressively and Holmes didn't guard as well. Campbell was splendid, he stepped out on the floor and hit threes and some others knocked some down.

What I thought was key for the Indians was that they were able to cut into the lead by about 10 or 12 within the first three minutes of the 3rd quarter. They got confidence and Holmes wilted a little.

 

With that Holy Cross used a little 3/4 court 2-2-1 press which slowed Holmes down and Holmes became passive against it and made some careless turnovers. In the halfcourt, Holy Cross mixed a little Triangle and Two with some 2-3 extended.

 

In my opinion, Holy Cross didn't really do anything differently defensively throughout the second half, but as the lead shrunk they seemed to pick up their intensity. They did as well on the offensive end.

 

Holmes did not shy away from Campbell and went right at him. He is like a hockey goalie. He is easily screened but is there to guard the basket. There was quite a bit of contact on drives but the drives that were finished in the first half didn't happen in the second half.

 

Fun game to attend and I would think that may have had one of the best crowds at Evans Fieldhouse in a while.

Very good analysis LC. The 1st 3 minutes of the 2nd half really gave HC confidence and belief they had a chance. When you are up by 25 you should never let that happen, but it does at all levels. It was night and day difference in both teams play from one half to the other.

The crew at this game tonight was not very good and have eschewed Julian Tackett's edict in regards to physical play.

 

Some say Campbell got hit on his three attempt to tie the game. I couldn't really tell, I thought he just double clutched.

One thing he gets away with is being under the basket behind the backboard and jumping into the defense who have position and drawing fouls, which really the defender has the position and should be a no call if anything. To his credit he has improved from last year and is a mean outlet passer.

Agreed. When I said they didn't attack the zone the same way in the second half, I was referring to the ball movemnet which had gotten them the open shots in the first half. Holmes was obviously able to penetrate, as they were consistently getting by their man and taking it to Campbell in the lane. I felt Bolden did this best. He was going right at Campbell and either going up and under for nice lay ups or just rising up high enough over Campbell to still make a tough runner. Both him and Englemon consistently made big shots last night to slow down HC runs.
