I'm glad I found this thread. I didn't know if I wanted to see it or not. I love musicals, did a ton of acting in years gone by and was also in a few movies. I have always had a love of the arts. I love going to the movies but also enjoy stage shows a bit more.

 

When a stage production becomes a movie I tend to not watch it if I've already seen it on stage. The Producers is a perfect example. There is a local girl I grew up with here in NKY who went on to work on Broadway, maybe some on here know her also. Her name is Angie Schworer. A few years I was in New York visiting family and was fortunate enough to go to the Broadway production of The Producers. Angie was playing the female lead in the Broadway production. Before the visit I was able to get in touch with Angie and she was awesome, she took the wife and I backstage after the show and invited the entire family back the next day where she let one of my daughters who is also into theatre try on her costumes etc. then took us all on stage, just to see my daughters smile was worth the trip. but I digress, After seeing The Producers live on Broadway I had no interest in seeing the movie (which Angie also had parts in). But after reading all the reviews on here about Les Mis I may have to go see it.

OK, thanks. My wife and I are on the fence about seeing it because of no dialogue. I like musicals but I have yet to find one with no dialogue that I enjoyed, and she feels the same way.

 

This is way better than "Tommy" or "Jesus Christ Superstar" IMO.

 

Those were the first two examples I could think of to give you a comparison by. The story of "Les Miserables" is much, much better and the music much more moving than really any other musical experience I've had.

I haven't seen the movie but checked Rotten Tomatoes. It has had mixed reviews. Many gave it glowing reviews, but abiut 40% didn't. One said without dancing it is only half a musical. Some said it had 50 songs but most of the singers couldn't sing. Another said it had an already built in audience that would love it and most others would be asleep halfway through it. My better half wants to see it so I suppose I'll take her this weekend. I loved Paint Your Wagon, so this shouldn't be too bad, lol.

I have. And maybe I wasn't very clear but I loved the flamboyance they portrayed. The "looking like a Tim Burton movie" comment wasn't meant to be an insult but a combined joke on their over-the-top look and a reference to their roles in an actual Tim Burton musical: Sweeney Todd.

 

I thought the Thenardiers were great even if their singing wasn't what I'd consider all that impressive.

 

When my daughter played Mme. Thenardier, the costuming was flamboyant as well.

If you can listen to Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin sing; you can surely handle Russell Crowe and Wolverine.

Lol. That's what I meant. I should be able to tolerate this movie. Russell Crowe can't be any worse than Lee Marvin or Clint Eastwood.

Just watched this for the first time today and, wow was I impressed! Ive see the live show a few times and this definitely lived up to the hype. Don't know why I waited this long to see it but I was sure missing out on something.

Is this still showing at any theaters?

Watched it recently. While the individual performances were impressive I didn't enjoy the movie itself.

Saw it for the first time tonight (at home). Liked it a lot. A whole lot. Jackman, Barks and Hathaway were outstanding; I liked the guys who played Marius and Enjolras almost as much.

 

I think you would almost have to have seen the stage production to fully appreciate the film.
