How do you feel about gun control after the Sandy Hook shooting?

When 20, 6 and 7 year olds get executed at their elementary school sometimes we as a nation need to think with our emotions. I've read or heard so far on here, the radio, facebook, etc that the need for high capacity magazines is for that time you come across a snake, target shooting competitions, 10 terrorist show up at your door and the quickest reload is one you don't have to make. None of these are good enough reasons to not limit at least the amount of rounds in a magazine. I just value the lives of children more than a target shooters convenience, a chance run in with a nasty snake or some tin foil hat red dawn scenario. I get that your career is tied to the gun trade but if you're unwilling to acknowledge that aside from mental illness that most of these mass shootings have in common is weapons with high capacity magazines then you're going to get left behind in the debate.

Outlawing higher capacity magazines will have no effect on this type of crime...it is silly to think that it would. There are thousands and thousands of 10 shot and larger magazines already in public hands...would stopping the sale of any more really accomplish anything?

Addressing this countries shortcomings in dealing with mental illness and the over medication of our children would have a much bigger effect on these crimes. Everyone of these types of crimes have been committed by people with sociopathic (sp?) issues. All have been committed by young people that felt they were "mistreated" at school and were desensitized to caring for life as each of us do.

I understand that everyone thinks that we have to do something and I agree, if there was something that could be legislated to stop this from ever happening I would support it. But everything that is being said that needs to be done is just "Feel good legislation" that everyone wants to say that they did something or supported something.

I don't sell guns or have any connection to the firearms industry...I'm just an average American that tries to see through the crap that is being spewed on TV, Radio and in the newspapers.

What you can't seem to understand is that the metal illness won't be thwarted by gun control. It won't matter if magazines are limited, it won't matter if we ban the mean looking guns. Hell, can you imagine how much worse it could have been if this sick individual made bombs? It would have been more than 20 children. Please stop acting like those of us that have a different opinion than yours don't care about the children or the families or the community. It's not just insulting, it's moronic. You're better than that. We care, as much as you. We've seen bans, we've seen how ineffective they've been. We want this sort of thing stopped, that's why we're trying to figure out what the real problem is instead of just trying to pass it off on the guns, because it's not the guns. It a very complex problem that a quick emotional fix simply won't cure. You're already left behind in the debate if you can't understand that magazines are easily altered, bought illegally, quickly swapped out, staggered and so on. Like I said, education on guns is essential to the debate.

By the way, watch the news some evening, you'll hear about home invasions. If you honestly think a 5 round magazine when you're groggy from being awakened by a few punks busting in your door in the middle of the night will absolutely be substantial to protect your family, by all means limit yourself. I say no thank you.

Columbine (CO): Weapons used 9mm Pistol and 12ga shotgun (homemade pipe bombs didn't go off thankfully)

Paducah (KY): Weapons had shotgun, rifle and .22 pistol. Used .22 pistol and fired 8 shots into a prayer group then surrendered.

Va Tech: Weapons used .22 Walther pistol and a 9mm Glock

This year:

Chardon (OH): Weapons used .22 Ruger pistol and a large knife

Perry Hall (MD): Weapon used Shotgun

Casper College (WY): Weapon used Bow and arrow and knife

No high capacity magazines used here or scary looking "assault rifles" either.

I looked back though most of the most recent school shootings and didn't find any that had "Assault weapons" or high capacity magazines.

But don't let facts get in the way, pass legislation that has had little to no chance of preventing another tragedy like this.

I just want someone to list one viable reason for having a 30 round magazine. There isn't a practical reason other than what they are designed for, tactical warfare situations which the general public will NEVER be a part of. So it comes down to it's cool to be able to shoot 30 rounds without reloading. That's not worth the risk to me of being used against children. I agree that mental health issues need to be addressed but something needs to be done on the gun front and the least damaging thing to the rights of the masses is to limit round capacity.

Here are a couple places to look, Newtown, CT, Clackamas, OR and Aurora, CO.

You're a smart guy, what percentage of these home invasions on the news happen to random innocent people? Almost all of the violence in this country occurs as a result of some other criminal activity. Why do you think that often times when showing a victim of a shooting on the news the picture of the victim is a previous mug shot? I get home defense but trying to use it as a supporting argument for high capacity magazines doesn't work. If 5 or 6 doesn't work then how many. My gun of choice holds 9 is that enough?

I thought the reports were the rifle was left in his car?

That was when it all first came out and the media would release anything and everything. After some time they said he shot the victims with a rifle.

Why is it gun enthusiasts get out of shape when discussing changing some of the gun laws, dealing with 30+ round clips, but never say a word about a simple ban that's been around quite a while------how long the barrel of a shotgun can be. A person from my county just served 3 years in prison for having a sawed off barrel in a shotgun. Why would regulating multiple shot clips be any different from regulating the length of a shotgun barrel? No one ever complains about that law.

What is the waiting period to buy a gun?

1 day? 2 days?

Is there a downside to 1 week ?

When my wife got her little pistol a couple years ago she went in, picked the gun, and walked out with it.

I don't think there is any legislation coming that can or will stop these types of shootings.

Gun deaths in general need to be the focus. Even then I suspect it would, at best, have only a small impact.

I'm all for closing any "gun show" loopholes that I read about.

I'm all for coming up with some sensible limit on clip capacity.

I'm all for making a gun purchase take a while. I see that as letting any passionate impetus subside.

I can't imagine why gun owners would be against any of the above.

Logic says that there are some people (hopefully not your bride) who have some episode that causes the to irrationally say " I need a gun to fix this quickly." Could be a lover quarrel. Could be someone that is suicidal. Seems like a week to wait would help a bit in that area.

I don't think there is one any more. On rifles and shotguns there never has been one as far as I know. I worked part time at Wal-Mart after I got out of high school and I know there wasn't one then (1993-1994). I know there use to be one for hand guns, some of it was to give time for the back ground check, some was a "cooling off" period. With technology advances the back ground check can be done in a few minutes.
