I'm not naive enough to think you can get rid of all guns. I realize there will be a black market. I'm neither a gun nor an anti-gun expert but I'm certain I've seen studies where banning them has helped elsewhere.

The POTUS said what many Americans of all political leanings are saying: We can do better and owe it to kids everywhere to at least talk about this , debate it, and SEE if there is a better way.

 

If that means that some weapons are outlawed so be it. The Constitution does not come without responsibilities. I have Freedom of Speech but can't yell "FIRE" in a theater. Seems like we can all agree that all weapons are not covered under the Constitution.

 

I'd hope we also talk about mental health.

 

If some of you cats want to call dialogue and debate "politicization" go right ahead. The debate needs to happen and NOW is the time to have the discussion.

The President can't win in this situation. If he tells the parents he wants to do more to protect kids, it's seen as politicizing. If he doesn't mention it and gets emotional, he comes off as soft.

 

I haven't voted for the President the past two elections, but there is no way I am going to criticize him for the past week. As he did with Sandy, he came off as Presidential and showed leadership. Republicans will bash, Democrats will praise. Lather, rinse, repeat.

 

I thought it was unwise of him to say what he said in the speech. I think he could have just been mourner-in-chief tonight & then tomorrow given a speech that frames the debate.

 

Having said that, because this situation is so difficult & challenging, I certainly cannot hold it against the President.

Wrong. I don't know that I like it, but I fully believe the constitutional framers meant for us to be allowed to own any firearm we wanted. Whether they could envision the guns we have now or not may be a different story.

I don't think Thomas Jefferson envisioned a rifle that shoots hundreds of rounds a minute killing small children when he helped craft that amendment. There'e been amendments repealed in the past so let's not act like they got it all right in 1776.

Drugs are the biggest reason for gun crime. No apples and oranges.

 

Look at Chicago, they outlawed the sale and possession of handguns in 1982. In just one weekend in September alone there were at least nine people killed and 37 others wounded in shootings throughout the city. Now, feel free to check out how many shootings they had in that city alone just this year. So please, tell me how a ban has stopped shootings.

I don't agree with a lot of Obama's actions. However, I commend him for actually quoting scripture from the Bible within a school. Maybe this same action (quoting scripture) could be a remedy for the culture we live in. But most folks don't want this in their schools. It's easier just to blame guns...
