Somebody please justify what use an automatic or semi automatic weapon has in civilian society? Personal protection? Don't think so. Hunting? Don't think so.

1 round per pull of the trigger. If we ban semi automatics all you have left are revolvers, muzzle loaders, shotguns(some anyway) and bolt action rifles.

 

I think the lack of education on the nomenclature regarding firearms does this debate, in general, a horrendous disservice.

I have run into that before. In fact when I was in college prior to ever owning or firing a gun I was all for "better gun control." Once I started recreationally shooting I started to educate myself on the laws and found that our laws were actually pretty good regarding the most dangerous of firearms. Don't get me wrong, all firearms can be dangerous but the "assault" weapons and "machine guns" that people always freak out about are extraordinarily difficult to get and prohibitively expensive.

Agree. While a regular joe like me can own a fully auto weapon, I don't think many know the permit and procedure to obtain it.

Along those same lines, I can't remember the city, but I read awhile back that there is a town in Georgia which has a law requiring all households to own a gun. I believe the article stated that the crime stats within that city were less than half the national average.

I don't doubt you at all.

First, I don't see a complete ban ever making it due to the change that would be required for a consitutional change. Too much opposition. But even if it were possible I don't see how it could be effective due to the sheer number of guns already in the hands of criminals or unregistered. It sounds like a ban would leave these criminals as the only ones with the guns. Does that make everyone feel safer?
