I have a friend who legitimately believes the Earth is only a few thousand years old. It is impossible to have any kind of serious conversation with him about scientifically proven facts or ideas without his religious beliefs trumping any reasonable sense he, as a human being, should have.

 

Whether or not you think global warming is true or not, first realize that carbon and other gases keep our planet warm, then think about what would happen if there were more of these elements in the atmosphere, and yes, you are right, that equates to a warmer planet. We produce billions of tons of extra carbon every year that this planet has never experienced in the billions of years of its existence, and the neglectful thinking that dominates our culture is the reason that the environment and the economy both are on irreversible and inevitable paths to destruction.

Simply because no one knows the complete truth on the matter is no excuse to dismiss it as quacky. Doing so is terribly irresponsible. Isn't it a bit ironic that RTS seems to imply, just like so many other non-visionaries in history, that those who seek the truth are quacks?

I respect that you've done your homework, and most likely more than I have, but by your responses I wonder if your studies have been done with an open mind, or just a quick slanted reception to literature that only supports your instincts to mock those who you probably refer to as tree hugging, granola eating lefties that don't support what I'm guessing to be your right of the road tendencies. I would think that with so much input that you'd perhaps be divided a bit on the topic and could see both sides. I see nothing in your approach that indicates as much, telling me that you're not as objective on the matter as you claim to be.

Been away for a couple of days, and it's pretty sad how disrespectful this thread has become!

 

I agree with the posters who believe in reading a lot of information from different sources, because they all have their slant. Does anyone believe the energy providers aren't filling the pipeline as much in their own best interests as scientists who want more grant money?

 

I was not a strong believer of global warming, as I was one of the people who believed the climate is cyclical. I still believe it is cyclical, but on an increasingly warmer trend. I also believe the Earth's increasing population is reducing the planet's ability to purge what we are putting in the environment. I don't believe in a doomsday, but I believe our planet, without changes by mankind, is going to be an increasingly unhealthier place to live.
