I'm almost willing to bet, he will not be with UL next year.

What would you do at this point if you were Zeke's parents? I don't want to hear about the past mistakes. If you were at this point right here with Zeke, what would you do going forward? Please keep the advice real and constructive.

Well, for now, at least, I'd assume he still has his full ride to Louisville intact. Also, he's legally an adult, so the only thing I'd have to hold over his head is my money. That being said, if I were his parent, I'd be telling him that he gets no money, no car, and no support unless he does ALL of the following:

1) Keeps all of his grades at a passing level.

2) Regularly goes to a counselor whom I have selected or at least agreed upon, regarding his problems with drugs, alcohol, and complete lack of personal responsibility.

3) Take and pass a drug test every two or three weeks until I determine he doesn't have to anymore.

4) Supply me with reliable proof that he's attending a church service at least once a week.

Except one thing. How do you get the parents to buy into it?

Apparently his issue is with alcohol. That does not make the kid a punk, just a young man that needs to focus on some life help instead of football for now.

 

I understand what you are saying and agree to a certain degree but I have talked to a handful of kids and adults that know this youngman better than I do and they all say "punk" is the proper word to describe him.

That is a good plan. I would include Coach Strong in this so he knows the steps being taken and get his approval. If he is still at UL, I would tell him he has to call me and talk every other day. I would also add an incentive. Stick to the plan successfully for two months and you will get your car back. I would put it all in writing, make him sign it and tell him to post it on the mirror in his bathroom where he will see it every day. I would also keep a written spreadsheet and track his progress so we could review it regularly.

And those comments usually come from the jealous kids and parents of what Zeke has as far as talent and what they see as undeserving opportunities. I know Zeke and his family fairly well and he often carries himself in a very mature manner and is respectful more than a lot of kids his age I know. His decision making is seriously not acceptable on any level with opportunities he's been given, but to label hm a "punk", I don't quite agree. But everyone has their own opinion. I think he has exhausted his chances at the DI-A level if this story is true.

I am sorry but I think many people who also know he and his family would disagree with you on this. But, as with most things in life it is perfectly acceptable and normal for two different people to feel the opposite way on the same thing.

 

I for one have been in the camp of considering Zeke to be a punk since watching him play sports since the 3rd grade. I do hope that he can somehow turn his life around, but unfortunately he has lost his best chances at being the most successful.

Most of those that I have heard the word "punk" were from parents and kids that didn't care one way or another about young Mr Pike. I have also heard the same from some educators who have had contact over the years with him. I respect your comments and opinion but I just don't think they can all be wrong about Pike.

I'm very objective, and I've often questioned the kids behavior even before his limelight status. I just don't consider him a punk. In the eyes of the criticizers every high school, college or pro athlete that repetitively makes the same badge judgement decision whether it's with alcohol, drugs, or domestic, doesn't have a problem that needs professional assistance, they're just punks. I'll accept that if that's how they're labeling it. And if that is the case, our sports world is full of punks!
