Andrew Wiggins Is Definitely One Of

Featured Replies

The best high school players I've ever watched. Checked him out at Alice Lloyd last night. Here's my article (link for videos at bottom):

Huntington Prep, led by University of Kentucky recruit Andrew Wiggins, travelled to Pippa Passes last night for a scrimmage against Alice Lloyd College's junior varsity team.

A heavily pro-UK crowd watched Wiggins and Xavier Rathan-Mayes put on a show in leading Huntington Prep to a 102-57 win.

The uncommitted Wiggins, who is widely considered the top high school player in the nation, led the way with 34 points on 12-19 shooting, including 5-7 from the three-point line. He also had 9 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals in 37 minutes of action.

Rathan-Mayes, who is committed to Florida State, finished with 15 points. Sophomore Montaque Gill-Ceasar added 14 points.

For most fans in attendance, the night was all about Wiggins. The crowd rumbled each time Wiggins rattled the rim and buzzed when he smoothly knocked down long range bombs.

When the Kentucky target checked out of the game for the last time, fans loudly chanted "C-A-T-S Cats Cats Cats!"

After the game, roughly a hundred or so fans, many decked out in UK apparel, lined up for an autograph/photo session.

A few thoughts:

- Wiggins is certainly in the running for title of best high school player I've ever watched in person. It's hard to argue that he is better than Lebron James at this stage of his career, but he is definitely on that superstar level. He plays with a cool, calm and collected demeanor but when he strikes, he delivers a floury of athletic ability and basketball talent.

- Rathan-Mayes was better than advertised. He was knocking down shots all over the court and dazzled with his speed and ball-handling ability. Florida State is getting a steal with this kid.

- A player you'll want to keep an eye on is Gill-Ceasar. He has the potential to be one of the top players in his class.

- I also came away impressed by Arkansas commit Moses Kingsley. He is athletic and has a big ceiling when he puts on some muscle.

- I never like to label a kid disappointing but last night was not impressive for Baylor commit Dominic Woodson. Woodson not only appeared to be a little out of shape, he was apparently benched in the second half by head coach Rob Fulford. Woodson certainly has the potential to be a star but he didn't display that ability last night.

- Kudos to the folks at Alice Lloyd College. The gym looked great and the event was handled perfectly.

- A special hat tip to my GPS system for saving the day. It's amazing where you can end up by making one wrong turn in Knott County. Thankfully, the trusty GPS righted the ship.

Watched OJ Mayo play many, many games. Wig is head and shoulders better than that.

I thought about that too. Wiggins is on another level than Mayo was in HS. He's playing in Scott County next Sunday. I'd recommend checking him out if you have an opportunity.

Thanks to GT, I got to see him during the summer. He's gonna be really, really good. And the peaches were also really, really good. I hate that Cal's gonna get him, but I will really, really enjoy watching him. :D

Nice report WM, but isn't it already widely known that Wiggins is the best high school prospect to ever play the game? Kid is a freak. Better than LJ.

Is it true though? Is he really a better high school prospect than LBJ? Is that possible?

I think it's widely said that he's the best high school prospect in the world right now but I'm not sure he's been proclaimed best ever (yet). I think he has the potential to go out as the best ever if he completely dominates this season. We'll have to revisit that conversation after the season (and after he commits to Kentucky, otherwise, no way he's the best ).

I'd say no, but it isn't out of the realm of possibility. He is certainly up in that stratosphere...

Well, thankfully, I've got to see Wig many times. I was at prep's practice last fall 3 days a week. And it's sometimes hard to tell just how good he is because there's nothing that he can't do really. And I can say without reservation, he's one of the nicest kids I've met. I heard someone say not long ago he has attitude and that just doesn't wash with him. Truly a nice kid. Frankly, when comparing him to OJ or Bill Walker or others I got to see everyday, Wig has no weaknesses. He handles it, shoots it, guards it, and can jump like nothing I've seen, and that's alot considering how Bill Walker could get off the floor.

My advice, if you want to see them locally for most of us, is to plan on seeing them at Boyd Co on December 14th/15th. On the 14th they play Walnut Hills out of Cincy and then we are flying Arlington Country Day in on Saturday to play them. At least ACD can provide athletes of similar caliber and it should be a riot. Sometimes it's tough with you're the #1 high school team in the country to see someone who provides much resistance.

After your brush with Tiger we all know that if Wiggins had an attitude you'd let us know. :D

I should be there weather permitting. Need to get a look at ACD anyway...

I plan on coming up too. Doc, can we have a special section for the BGPer's?
