It is borderline ridiculous to say school size/not having enough athletes is an issue for 6A schools. I see kids at Beechwood who as middle schoolers and even freshmen you would have said no way that kid ever can be any good in football. He just isn't an athlete. Yet by their senior year they are starting varsity. It takes work, creating a culture, getting kids to play and believe they can play. We have seen every 6A school in N. Ky. be competitive at the highest level. If they did it once, they can do it again. They need to find a way to build that program so it happens year after year. To do that you have to get some of those kids walking the halls out on the football field and buying in.

 

Couldn't be said any better. The kids have to believe in ur program and want to run thru a brick wall for the HC. Some of these coaches ought to read the book "You Win With People" if they need to change their culture.

Absolute RUBBISH! All you have to do is look at the sidelines of the SC SK game last Friday. SC had a half dozen athletes capable of reaching state in track. Absolutely no comparison what so ever. There are 7 HS programs in Kenton County and 1 in Scott. That is the difference!!!! The athletes you speak of DO NOT EXIST and you are speaking PURE MANURE. Ryle and Dixie are in the same boat as SK. The talent pool is simply to diluted. Lexington 6A, with the exception of Scott is similar. Only in Louisville are the 6A schools consistently competitive.

How about one county school teams like Clark County and Muehlenberg County? Why aren't they as good as Scott County? They are one county 6A schools.

There is the talent and enough of it at Simon Kenton to be a top program every year. They just need to keep working and keep building the program. I agree with VOR to a point. However, Scott Co has the advantage of no competition. We've had this debate forever- combine the Oldham schools into one, could they compete with St. X and Trinity? No. X and T have the advantage of drawing from multiple districts/counties/states. Could a combined Boone Co or Kenton Co? Same as Oldham.

 

SK has gotten better over time. To continue to do so, they will need to focus on the middle school programs and younger. They need to get kids excited about football. They've done a nice job with their summer football camp. Having kids excited to play FB is the key for all HS programs. Don't believe me? Go to Ft. Thomas on Friday night and look at the kids wearing FTJRFB jerseys/shirts.

In the early 2000's, at a 'diluted' Oldham County HS, we played an eventual state champ Trinity to within 9 points on their home field (had the ball on their 2 when time ran out) and lost to St. X by a similar spread (it was within 1 TD until we threw a pick 6 very late in the 4th).

 

Disciplined kids, supportive parents, and more good athletes than you'd think in that county as a whole. Plus, if I had kids all in the same feeder system from youth league on up, I think we'd be even more ahead of the game than we were able to be while at the 'diluted' OCHS.

T and X are probably 4 td better than Scott, which is really scary because Scott has about the best circumstances a public program could want. Enrollment size, no competition for athletes, etc.

Not deficient coaching. But they are not getting everything out of the student body they have. They should not lose games to 1A and 2A schools, even Beechwood and New Cath. I guarantee you if Rash or Eviston were at any of those 6A schools, they would not lose to small schools. Not with the numbers they would have to work with at the big schools. And it wouldn't be just because they are better X and O coaches. They would get more kids involved and excited and working in the off season the right way.

Then explain to me why there is not a single athlete comparable to Nussbaum in our entire district, or in Lexington either, except Scott, which probably has about 6 athletes as good as or better than Nussbaum?

Nussbaum? Tyler Durham is twice the FB player. There are tons of really good football players in NKY. The difference is, the schools that have 3-5 win. Those with 2-4 win some, those with 1-3 sometimes win and those with 0 rarely win. Talent is too spread out.
