Is Mayfield's Jake Guhy the best QB in Cardinals History?

Featured Replies

Watching Guhy this season has been a treat as he is well on his way to breaking many of the Cardinal passing records, several of which are currently owned by his brother. He now throws short and medium balls very accurately and has improved his arm strength from last year to where he is now effective on the long ball, somthing he could not do last year. He rarely throws pics this year, somthing that he had problems with last season. Besides his passing abilities, he, like his brother before, is very intelligent and puts the Cardinals in the best possible positions each play with his audibles at the line of scrimmage based on how the defense is aligned. I think he is or will leave here as the best qb the Cards have ever produced. What do the rest of you think that have had the chance to watch him?

Wow, I agree he is having a great year, but I'm not sure I can call him "best ever". He still has another season to play, so I am going to wait before I can put him in there with David Fowler, Jeff Boyd, and his brother, Luke.

Its been a long time since Fowler, and I was young and impressionable, we didn't throw as much back then, but, Fowler was one heck of a QB!

I too will reserve judgement until next year, when there is no Jonathan Jackson to run wild out of the backfield keeping the defense honest.

Is he looking at a future as a QB at the next level?

Not unless he has grown a lot.

If he is the best, it is the most incredible one season improvement in the history of high school football.

The final answer to that question will not be answered until after his senior year. Right now the answer is NO! Not even close.

I think he may be the best, his stats would lead me in that direction. While having Jackson in the backfield makes his life easier I will also point out that I don't think he has as strong of a reciever corp as his brother had though they certainly are catching alot of balls. Stat wise as a junior he is having as good a year as his brother had as a senior. I can't tell a difference. As for Fowler, he made it all the way to the NFL so he was obviously great but Mayfield did not throw much when he was a Cardinal

Who was the QB in '87? He played pretty well in the State Title game vs. Danville.

Also, wasn't there a great Wishbone QB in the late and mid 70's that played for the Cardinals? I doubt he was asked to throw much back then but would he be in your all-time discussion?

Where did Fowler play college ball? Please excuse my ignorance and no disrespect to him for not knowing.

Thru the 10 game regular season - Guhy's numbers are 112 of 172 (65%) for 1,885 yards with 22 TD's and 1 int

He threw 14 int's last season

Fowler played for the Bills and then for the Rams for a short period of time. He was Roman Gabrials backup right before Joe Namath went there and backed him up.. He played a good portion of his pro career in the WFL for the Jacksonville Express and 1 or 2 other teams, but, I can't remember..

To answer the question about Jake, the answer is absolutely not and not even close.. He may end up holding alot of passing records because Mayfield throws the ball so much more than they did back in the 70s, 80s and 90s under Jack Morris and Paul Leahy.. I can't even imagine what type numbers Fowler would have put up in todays offense with Joe Ford to throw it too, but, back then, they had running backs like Robert Mayfield, Van Pittman, Leslie Dismukes and Dwight Lovelace absolutely tearing it up on the ground. Wasn't alot of need to pass..

This is strictly my opinion, of course, but Jeff Boyd belongs in the conversation. In terms of state championships, he QB'd the Big Red to three straight appearances...losing the first, but winning the next two. He did not throw much either, except after a turnover...which was the habit of Jack Morris...but Jeff was a threat to run the ball, and teams had to respect that or he would make them pay. Just throwing my two cents in.
