Cam Newton cartoon that appeared in the Charlotte Observer

Wednesday's edition of the Charlotte Observer features an editorial cartoon focusing on Panthers quarterback Cam Newton. As you can see above, it's not a friendly cartoon, but rather one that calls out Newton for his signature touchdown celebration while pointing out that he is not actually a ferocious cat.

As you can see, Newton's doing the Superman celebration he likes to pull off in the end zone, but underneath is actually a "Hello Kitty" logo. The cartoon is largely based, I assume, on the fact that Newton was rather downtrodden after the Giants whipped up on Carolina during Thursday's game.

Charlotte Observer thinks Cam Newton is more 'Hello Kitty' than 'Superman' - CBSSports.com

Is this cartoon wrong, racist, or did it hit the nail on the head?

Racist?

Yes, it was an editorial cartoon and his skin color in the cartoon is not accurate.

You'd be a hell of a first baseman with that stretch...

Do you think if Newton was white and/or the QB of the Panthers was white that the Observer would put a black face on the white QB and run with it in their paper?

I say NO YOU KNOW WHAT WAY!!!

You'd be a hell of a first baseman with that stretch...

Agreed.

Although I think it's also a huge stretch to make any declarations about Newton at this point.

White and it looks like the cartoon has a bit of a gut...maybe it was one of Newton's offensive linemen?

Either way, I didn't think race at all, but then again I'm a young white male.

Much darker and you'd lose detail in the picture. Don't think that's an issue.

I agree on the gut, they are definitely mocking him and it is not an accurate representation.

Thin ice...

Edit.

Yes, it was an editorial cartoon and his skin color in the cartoon is not accurate.

While the exact shade and hue may not be correct, I think you may be the only person in the world who would think this could be racist.

And didn't this guy just have one bad game? Geez, people are awfully overreactive.

Intriguing.

I saw the cartoon and didn't think anything of it. Didn't notice the skin color either. Are they trying to say Cam acts white and is fat? Is that the fallout of this?

Do I think it is racist, not sure, maybe, I don't know... However, the peeps on ESPN's First Take had some racial issues with it so no I am not the only person in the world to ask the question and/or bring it up for discussion.

And I don't want you to take my statement out of context, my yes was not a yes it is racist, it was a yes I am asking the question in response to Crash Davis' question.
