Beechwood 37 Elizabethtown 12

Congrats TIGER'S great start for remainder of season. JD

Dominating performance by the Tigers defense tonight. I believe E'town had 2 first downs against the first team defense plus a first down from an offsides penalty on a 4th down play. It was a grind for the offense but they kept after it and got the comfortable win. They still are turning the ball over too much. It was good to get a win.

Nussbaum 22/175 2 TDs

Nussbaum 22/175 2 TDs

He also threw for a TD after extending a messed up play.

Got to see some old school Nussbaum tonight. Not just heads down straight running. Even had a Spin move to break away for a TD.

If it wasn't for one very fast E-Town DB that could really tackle, Nuss would have had 300 yards and 4 TDs.

It's win for Beechwood and a win is a win but has Beechwood turned the corner? I see no significant wins to this point.

What would be a significant win? You play who's on your schedule. First week with new QB and the Defense played pretty solid. All we have to do is keep getting better and get ready for District Play and the Playoffs. Dixie next week should tell us more.

Somebody that's good. Beechwood hasn't beaten a real good team since 08 and that would be NCC in 10. If you can't beat good teams now you won't come playoff time.

We won't know about Beechwood till playoff time because no one on the schedule will qualify as a good opponent.

I will point out that Beechwood led undefeated 6A Simon Kenton almost the entire game before a late TD gave SK the lead. Then Beechwood fumbled on the 20 after driving 60 yards toward what would have been a last second winning TD. Not a win but SK is a good opponent and the Tigers held up well without Nussbaum. Of course, the injuries came after that. The defense looked more like the defense I expected to see with Nussbaum and Kinman back in there. But Erdman is gone for the year and Justice has not been able to play for 3 weeks so we will never see what would have been a great defense.

Good job Beechwood!

Late game, late game report:

Not much to report from the first quarter. Each team had 3 possessions. Elizabethtown went 3 and out on all theirs. Beechwood picked up one 1st down on their first drive and Nussbaum fumbled the ball away on their second drive. The quarter ended with Beechwood at the 4 yard line on their 3rd drive.

Beechwood finally got on the board on the first play of the second quarter. Nussbaum ran it in from 4 yards out. The extra point try was blocked. With 11:56 to go it was Tigers ahead 6-0. Elizabethtown had 3 more possessions in the second quarter and finally picked up a first down just before halftime. Before that first down though, with 3:48 to go in the half, Beechwood had a 1 play TD score on a 52 yard pass play from QB Jason Suchanek to Chris Lightner. Miles Sletto's extra point made it 13-0 Beechwood. Elizabethtown threw an interception to Max Shover with 17 seconds left with Shover returning the ball to the 46. Suchanek had a 28 yard run on the first play, running out of bounds at the 26 with 8 seconds to go. Beechwood tried a pass play and it was incomplete, 3 seconds left. Then Sletto came on and kicked a 36 yard field goal to end the half with Beechwood leading 16-0.

Beechwood opened the second half with a nice drive from their own 20 but Suchanek threw an interception at the 2 to Chapman of Elizabethtown. It was another 3 and out with Elizabethtown narrowly avoiding a safety on two plays. Beechwood started their drive on the 41. It ended with a 24 yard TD pass on a crazy play from Nussbaum to Lightner. The play was actually a run. Nussbaum was spun around as he went around left end. He reversed field to the right but could not get around a couple Elizabethtown players. So he turned back to the left again and looked like he was going to be dropped for a big loss as the Elizabethtown defense closed in. Then Nussbaum saw Lightner standing all alone just past the line of scrimmage and quickly flipped the ball to him for the TD. The Sletto XP was good and the Tigers led 23-0 with 4:41 left. Another Elizabethtown 3 and out was followed by Nussbaum throwing an interception to Chapman at the 37.

Quarter 4 opened with Elizabethtown punting but the snap went over the punter's head and Beechwood ran him out of bounds at the 28. A couple plays later, Nussbaum made a nice spin and cut back and went 22 yards for another TD. Add on Sletto's XP and it was 30-0 Beechwood with 10:59 to go. Elizabethtown got a 60 yard run from their best player Josh Williams. He was run down at the 5 by Lightner. Three plays later Elizabethtown finally scored on a 3 yard run by Brown. They went for 2 and did not get in. With 6:58 left Beechwood was up 30-6. From there Beechwood played their second team. Most of Elizabethtown's starters stayed in the whole game. They only had another 10-15 players on the sideline so they may not have had a full second team with them. Beechwood's Mitch Thomas took the first play by the Beechwood second team 69 yards for a TD just 13 seconds after Elizabethtown had scored. 37-6 6:45 left. Elizabethtown's first team had more luck moving the ball now and got a 46 yard TD run from Williams to close the scoring. Beechwood wins 37-12.

The 2012 Dixie Colonels are probably the weakest Dixie team I ever remember. What next week should tell Beechwood is if they don't put it to Dixie they are probably not a serious 1A title contender.

The same Colonels team that beat Conner? So you are saying Conner is not a contender in 5A?
