I was just wanting some thoughts on this and it is high school career only in kentucky, not college. Some names that come to my mind are Chris Lofton, Richie Farmer, and Rick Jones

add Travis Ford and Scott Draud and this is a very good list IMO

I seen Scott Draud score 46 points one night, (Of course before the 3 point line.) But over half of his shots made, were 20 footers or so!!!

 

I had friend tell me that when Draud was at Vandy, he came back to put on a shooting exhibition at Ken Shields' basketball camp one summer. My friend said that he went from elbow to elbow 100 times and made 98! 98% from anywhere on the floor is unbelievable. That's amazing.

I have been at a shoting clinic, actually more than one, when I was a kid at NKU camps. Of course this was at least 10 years ago, but it was the most unbelievable thing I've ever seen. The man hit 8-10 half court shots and then to he made 4 in a row from half court with one hand behind his back.

That sounds a lot like Phil Cox (Mr. Basketball 1981), who also played at Vandy and still may be the school's all-time leading scorer. A lot of his points were from 20-plus feet away in the days before 3-pointers. He had several 40-plus games.

Scott Draud was the best shooter I've ever seen in KY.

I can't recall a better shooter than Draud from Northern Kentucky.

Stepp never hit a three pointer in a high school game - they didn't exist then. IF they had, his name would be #1 on that list - and by a wide margin.

 

As Clarence Carter would say "He was Strokin'".

How Keith Adkins from Paintsville. He could flat stroke the 3.

I don't remember Stepp being a prolific long range shooter. He was a great scorer who got good elevation on his jumpshot and hit a great percentage of his shots. As weak as Phelps' competition was, I don't think that Stepp took as many shots that would now be three pointers as people would expect because he could get a 15-18 footer almost at will. If the three point shot had been available, he undoubtedly would have taken more long range shots than he did.

 

Stepp was the best high school scorer that I ever saw play in Kentucky. I don't think he was close to being the best pure shooter. Lofton, Houston, Farmer, and Draud would be near the top of my list.

You may well have seen Stepp play far more often than I did - I'm basing my assessment of him on one game - his appearance in the AIT at Ashland.

 

In that game, he racked up 55 points while constantly being double and triple teamed by 6'4", 6'5", and 6'7" players. He was shooting from around 25 to 30 feet from the basket, and when he missed, it was a shot that rattled out. He had tremendous arch on his shots, and as you pointed out, he got great elevation from his legs. I wish I had some film of him to show Little Frances what his shot looked like.

 

I never saw King Kelley Coleman play, but I've seen Lofton (repeatedly), Farmer (repeatedly), Cochran (once), Draud (three times), and a slew of others. Cochran had the best looking left handed stroke, Draud the best looking right handed stroke. But when the dust settles, for my money, Stepp had the best combination of stroke, range, and scoring capability. I'll stick with my earlier statement - had he played with a 3 point line, he would be at the top of the list.

Ryan Cochran had a beautiful stroke, and I really enjoyed watching him shoot.

 

But the best shooter in high school, ESPECIALLY from long range had to be Ervin Stepp. Incredible range, and unbelievable accuracy.

Okay, you caught me. I went too far. Draud had a terrific stroke, but even that gooseneck couldn't hold a candle to the sweet floaters that lifted from the fingertips of Bill Bradley... arching ever so softly toward the net (I don't remember him ever drawing iron).

 

Talk about a clinic! I can distinctly remember watching the Master work tirelessly, perfecting that magical touch. It was nothing for him to go to the Ashland YMCA and work on that shot for as much as 5 or 6 minutes at a time, before calling it a day. No waterbreaks, no timeouts, no stopping. What a work ethic!! In some years, he would repeat this workout as often as twice a summer.

 

Such is the life of a man in his single minded pursuit of mediocrity.

Alsop was a great shooter for scott county. They also had a wonderful team in 1998 and 1999. I think if they could have one back to back that they would have been the best team ever to play in this state. As you know, I said TEAM, not pure talent. They had three guys who average around 20 a game and two of the best shooters ever in alsop and jones.
