Helmet off during play rule

Featured Replies

If a helmet comes off during play, that player has to come out for one play.

Do you think this can affect a games outcome? Is it a good rule?

I know in the Brossart/Bracken match-up, Brossart went for two in a wildcat formation after their starting QB, who also holds on kicks, lost his helmet on a touchdown run.

It is a fantastic rule and hopefully will result in time being spent to properly size a helmet to each player. Every athlete that plays with helmets that pop off on a regular basis is at risk of getting a serious head injury.

Agreed. Way too many helmets popping off these days.

I don't think it's a bad rule. I don't think it would effect the outcome of a game either. I think this rule has been put into place so the players and coaches make sure the helmets are properly fitted. Just another effort to improve player safety. The newer helmets, if not fitted properly, easily come off as we have seen the past few years.

I remember way back when I played, I had to put my fingers into the ear holes and pull the helmet out in each direction to take it on and off. I see players now just grab the face mask and slip it on and off with little effort. Way to loose IMO.

Same with me. It was a job to get my helmet off when I tried.

I think its a good rule, but could have a major impact on games.

Me too, however, these days I see kids take off their helmets without even undoing the chin straps! THAT is why this rule is a MUST. As the season progresses and coaches get tired of their players sitting, they will get the helmits fitted better.

I noticed a couple instances this year where players' chinstraps came unsnapped at the top, and the refs immediately sent them out. In the past, it seemed like they always called time for them to get them snapped. The helmets never came off, the players were just trying to get that top one snapped again.

I wonder if they were going for 2 anyway? Momentum was in their favor.

It stuns me as well.

I equate these players with loose helmets to these boys with the pants on the ground. They think it's trendy. The difference is, if your pants fall down you just get a breeze down there, if that helmet comes off you can die! I think colleges and pros should do a better job of promoting this important safety issue. We learn by seeing. Has anyone stopped to think this could be a contributor to the much higher rate of head injuries?

Honestly, I think it's how the helmets themselves are made. I was playing when the first "new" helmet, the Revolution came out. I wore an "old school" Ridell in high school, and my first year of college ball, I was so excited to wear the fancy new Revolution. I quickly found out, while they may be lighter, and look cooler, they did not stay on like you would think a football helmet should. I had my helmet come off once, my entire playing career, up to my freshman camp in college. During that first week, my helmet came off at least 5 times. I tried tightening the straps, putting more air in it, and it didn't really help much. I ended up switching back to an "older" style helmet.

If you let the kids decide if the helmet fits it will be too loose. I personally fit all my kids and check them regularly through the season. We use Revo's and I haven't had a helmet come off in 3 years.

There is a helmet that is fairly new, and I am very impressed with. The Xenith. There is a feature with the chin strap that is very similar to a draw string on a pair of sweat pants. Before snapping the chinstrap, the player can pull the bottom two straps apart, and this tightens the helmet down onto their head. These helmets also have very high ratings with concussion prevention. They are very reasonably priced, $235, as compared to some of the others ive seen at over $300.
