September 5, 201214 yr The stimulus was a half hearted effort. I'd argue it should have been much bigger and we'd be a whole lot farther along in this recovery. I agree. Austerity has not proven to help anywhere in times like these.
September 5, 201214 yr This isn't a party thing, it's a government spending thing. Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Bush 2, Obama, big spenders. Reagen, Bush 1, Clinton not so much so. The results speak for themselves. I would suggest you study up a bit more on President Reagan and the issue of debt and deficit spending.
September 5, 201214 yr So spend your way to prosperity? Not to prospertity but out of depressions and recessions. If you're not familiar with Keynesian economic theory it calls for a generally free market system that requires government intervention in bad times to keep demand up and thus prop up the economy until it recovers.
September 5, 201214 yr The problem is that you (seem to) assume that debt held today is NOT a product of previous decisions. That defies economic logic. CBPP says that Bush tax cuts and two wars represent 50% of the debt we will owe in 2019. HALF! You can't look at it in a linear fashion ie President Bush left here and President Obama started here. The only way that would be true is IF on Jan 20, 2008 all of the spending and revenue that was created prior to that date was wiped out and we started over. Off the Charts Blog | Center on Budget and Policy Priorities | What So in other words I contend you guys are not using fact and economic logic to support your beliefs. You are right it is not linear...but Obama said he would bring the troops home, close Guantonomo, cut the debt, and drop unemployment. Those were his 2008 campaign promises. You don't want to hold him accountable for anything he says and promises. He is a failed leader. A person who promises more than he can deliver, and a man who is in a job way over his ability level. We have no more time to see if he can grow into the job. Again I will ask, what has he done well?

Can you speak to the Hope and Change campaign promise of the debt being cut in half in four years? If four years ago someone would have said, " he is not being honest, the debt will actually inrease by 60%. Would you have believed that? And if by some miracle you did believe it, would you say, well that's good, he still has my vote.
September 5, 201214 yr Author I would suggest you study up a bit more on President Reagan and the issue of debt and deficit spending. Government spending increased under Reagan until around 1983 and declined every year after. That's government spending as a percentage of GDP. But if you are going to lay the blame for Obama at the feet of Bush can we not do the same with Reagan and Carter?

But if you are going to lay the blame for Obama at the feet of Bush can we not do the same with Reagan and Carter? That's what he wants you to say. Obama has no time table with his supporters (followers). The future is forever, and unemployment will drop below 8% at some point. The troops may come home someday...

So it's safe to say that yourself, Clyde and the president are all Kaynesians?
September 5, 201214 yr So it's safe to say that yourself, Clyde and the president are all Kaynesians? Utopians? j/k couldn't help it.
September 5, 201214 yr Author That's what he wants you to say. Obama has no time table with his supporters (followers). The future is forever, and unemployment will drop below 8% at some point. The troops may come home someday... I didn't give Obama a time table, Obama gave Obama a time table. The difference is Reagan slowed spending there is no indication, actually there is plenty of indication that Obama has no such plans.

But if you are going to lay the blame for Obama at the feet of Bush can we not do the same with Reagan and Carter? I am not laying the blame anywhere unlike many. I'm the one pointing out the flaws in logic. Every POTUS contributes and they make an impact even after they are gone from office. THAT is the point.
September 5, 201214 yr That's what he wants you to say. Obama has no time table with his supporters (followers). The future is forever, and unemployment will drop below 8% at some point. September 5, 201214 yr You forgot his biggest promise was the Affordable Health Care Act which he delivered. He said it was not a tax when indeed it was. Another fabrication.
