I'm not sure I believe the 759,000 figure either. But what number is acceptable? 300,000? 75,900? I don't know the answer to that one.

 

It just seems to me that this could have been done on Jaunary 1 - ANY January 1 - and this wouldn't smack of what it so obviously is.

Yeah, I thought the 5 year thing was odd as well but without seeing more detail it's hard to tell. Could be a good portion are college students.

 

I want to add that I personally don't care one way or the other. I have never voted without showing an ID. I would say most hold voting as the top of the heap of rights we are afforded. As such I don't think it's unreasonable to ensure that right is abused. Plenty of people have died protecting that right so I don't think it's asking too much of anyone to jump through a few hoops.

 

I agree that the timing screams of politics at it's best but I also don't know how long PA has been trying to get this passed.

A. Happens all the time. Not saying it's right, but I often hear people rail against regulations and red tape that are in place to stop things from happening whose chances are slim to none.

2. I strongly believe in prevention. The timing doesn't pass the smell test, though.

Which is the more egregious "travesty of justice"? One person getting to vote when they shouldn't, or thousands being shut out? Which is more offensive in the eyes of the Voter Rights Act (that's "Rights", not "Privileges")?

 

I wonder when this Act was initially submitted? I would guess that it takes months for things like this to become passed as legislation. Would you be more accepting of it if it was proposed several months ago?

The law was approved by the Pennsylvania state government back in mid-March. They were the 15th state to pass a similar law. This did not come out of left field over the past couple of weeks.

I think an even better question is why hasn't an ID ALWAYS been required as well as why wait until now to change the law? It should go into effect January 1, 2013. Not immediately. The timing sticks to high heaven.

Of course not. However, how long do you think that it will take to get all eligible voters enough time to obtain the proper documentation to be allowed to vote? Surely you wouldn't want any eligible voter to miss the opportunity to vote?

Oh please. You are required to have ID to do just about anything in this country. Think about it, you have to have ID to register for the draft (which is required at age 18), buy tobacco, buy alcohol, get in an R rated movie, fly on an airplane, buy a Playboy, pick up tickets at the will call window at Great American Ballpark. Yet somehow it's discriminatory to ask for proper ID to cast a vote for the leaders of this country.

 

So if you don't have an ID how exactly have you been functioning legally inside the United States. But the more I think about it, it's diffently more important to monitor who is buying a cigar than it is to monitor who is voting on the leadership of this country. Certainly explains how certain people get elected.

Not at the risk of negatively affecting an election or making it harder for someone with a right to vote able to vote. If I wanted it changed at this time I'd have adopted Run To State's idea. That's the best thing to do.

I've posted on this subject multiple times in this forum. Look it up. Your reality is not every one else's.

As I've said before, an ID was already required. It was decided to make the ID requirement more specific scant months before the election.

Nearly impossible to function in our society without proper ID. Period end of story.

Went to the Doctor today, it was just a regular check-up and all is fine. Now understand I have been going to the same group practice since 1981 but today for the first time ever, I had to show my Driver License to the woman at the desk, who BTW greeted me with HI (my first) and asked how my wife and daughter were doing by their first name!

 

When I questioned her why the ID, she told me it was required.......

I will borrow a page from the Harry Reid play book and tell you to prove its not true.

I am willing to bet that is a lot more common than what people believe. I bet a lot of the voting books have not been updated in years which lends itself to a potential fraudulent environment.
