MJ's basketball franchise is his scarlet letter. He gets to suffer year in/year out.

I'm not at all. In fact it seems to me he thanked the coach for helping him out saying that nobody but he and his mom knew how much he helped him then jokingly said he tried to fix the mistake of cutting him. Just bc we may not like MJ's personality doesnt mean he owes this guy money. The person in this entire fiasco that comes off the worst to me is the writer.

 

That's the second time I posted that and you still missed my second sentence in that post. I'll post it again.

 

And truthfully he doesn't have to spend cash to make it right but he's shown no concern to make it right at all.

A player that's sent to the minors is not cut, he's optioned. A player that tries out for a high school team is not cut, he's sent to frosh or JV. A player that doesn't make any team, is cut.

 

It's not a difficult concept.

 

I wasn't at MJ's tryout, but i have a hard time believing he was trying out for anything other than the Varsity team. When he didn't make it, he was cut from the Varsity roster and forced to join JV. Semantics over what "cut" means but he was kept from the Varsity team and thats what fueled his fire.

It's Semantics...he was cut from the Varisty list, therefore he was cut from the team, so there is truth. Since the Varisty team and JV team are two different teams, he was most certainly cut from one of them. The white lie is where everyone thinks he didn't make any of the high school teams. And I blame that lie more on the media trying to sell insprining stories than Jordan.

Did Pop become an alcoholic because of his mental problems or vice versa? I don't know Pop but I have a hard time believing everything this writer, whose extremely self-righteous, says about Pop's story. Probably is half as much as the poor victim as he's being painted.

As someone who lettered in 4 different Varsity sports in high school, I will very much disagree. Not making "the team" aka Varsity and being cut are the same thing IMO. At the end of the day, especially for someone like Jordan, there's only one team that matters.

I was wondering that as well. The writer makes it seem like it was because of the mental illness.

Probably hard to tell with someone who has mental illness like Pop does. The writer never specified when Pop was diagnosed. Doubtful anyone will be able to say which came first. If I was writing a piece bashing MJ the mental illness would come first then the alcoholism. Much more sympathetic that way.

I also played varsity baseball and when we had cut day it was for players who were cut from the team not sent down to JV. There is no way that being placed on day 1 and being cut are the same thing.

 

I guarantee if you go to any high school athletic program and ask the players what it means I they've been cut and I guarantee they all say the same thing.

As a coach, being put on the JV team is not being cut. Cut to me means from the the entire program.

Who decides who MJ needs to show love to? Not a writer for SI and certainly not us.
