One of the largest Catholic universities in the country sent him a letter after his budget was proposed.

 

Joining a chorus of Catholic bishops, theologians, priests, and social justice leaders, nearly 90 Georgetown University faculty and administrators have called Representative Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.) to task for his misuse of Catholic social teaching in defending his budget, which hurts the poor.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has also opposed the budget, writing in a letter that it failed to meet moral obligations to poor people.

 

"Everybody looks at the Gospel, everybody looks at Catholic social teaching and then makes up their own mind about how it applies in the real world. We all do that," Reese told The Huffington Post. "But, I think that we, the faculty at Georgetown University, who have studied Catholic social teaching, look at his budget and say, 'Hey, wait a minute, you're balancing the budget on the backs of the poor.'''

 

"Everybody's worried about the debt, but you can't quote the pope to say that the debt should be solved by cutting government programs that help poor people and not raising taxes."

This guy's intelligence fascinates me and appeals to me even if I don't agree with his budget. I like thinkers.

Paul Ryan did his legal and fiduciary responsibility as Chairman of the Budget - he created a budget. It was his job and he did it.

 

So the question is - did anyone like the proposed budgets in the 2 years preceding Ryan's?

 

 

 

 

Yes, its a trick question - the Democratically controlled House did not create any budgets. They (Spratt) failed minimum requirements.

 

 

Like any budget there is likely things to agree with and disagree with. But as of now there is no alternative. None. No counter proposed budget. So you how do you debate and amend the budget where there is nothing being proposed?

Skeptics say that Mr Ryan's budget shrinks discretionary spending down to 3% of GDP by 2050. Today it's at 12%. They wonder how that can happen since Defense spending alone is close to 5%.

To your first sentence the skepticism was around more of a lack of "how do you propose this works." The details seem to be lacking from what I've read.

I'm saying he shouldn't tout his love for Ayn Rand and how compelling she was on his political life and then go vote on bailouts, the patriot act, increase of the federal government, ect.

 

 

Mcpapa said something about people not even knowing about Ayn Rand. I just didn't want people on here who haven't heard of her to think that Rep. Ryan and his policies is what she is all about.

I think we can all agree that something that caught his attention and fascinated him as a young man has now evolved to the point of either completely saying "I was wrong" OR " My position has evolved."

I am sure the budget has things that are fair game for debate. But you have to have a counter proposal for debate.

 

I am reminded of Teddy Roosevelt:

For our system to work there needs to counter proposals and debate and discussion. Without a counter proposal the other side is not even in the arena.

I read an article on Rep Ryan's wife. Sounds like quite the success story herself and she is cousins with Rep Boren from OK. She graduated from Wellesley and from Law school. Went on to be a lobbyist for PriceWaterhouse. Met young Rep Ryan and a year later were married in 2000. Her side of the family is filled with politics.

I agree. I think many of the very intelligent BGPers who inspire us daily with their wisdom can name authors, philosophers, even musicians who were a huge inspiration at one time in their lives, and maybe now not so much.
