As I always say anyone that tries to simply use a scrimmage score to make a determination is a fool.

 

Way too many factors. Injuries. Players not in their normal position. Staff wants to work on a certain formation/part of their playbook. Staff needs to play a lot of players due to having a lot of open spots.

 

Conner had 4 starters not play on offense. They had a key backup back not play.

 

2 starters did not play D because of shortages on offense.

 

Starting backer out with an injury.

 

Starting DL goes down minutes into the scrimmage.

 

And you know what? BW probably has the same issues.

 

You either know how to watch a scrimmage or you don't and it's obvious as to those who cannot.

Beechwood is not my team. I just think it was funny how a 5A team that people say are going to win state struggled with a 1A program that had to replace 20 Seniors.

 

I am Conner fan and believe they need to play 10 + games to even begin to think about a state championship.

I think there is probably a specific "reason" this year's thread has so many posts, and we all know his name.

I would bet that Beechwood if they did scout a practice worked it out with Coach from Conner before they would send someone to watch and scout a practice. I would think both coaches agreed this could be done if it actually took place. JD

Did you take note that Beechwood scouted Conner? Don't discount the importance of a game plan.

Believe me, Beechwood's player rotation would be much different if they felt this was a scrimmage they had to win. If they wanted to win so bad, why did they play their JV defense on Conner's last TD drive while Conner still had their starters in on offense?

Fogle was never on a field without Nussbaum and Erdman.

The last drive Beechwood had their entire starting defense in minus #57, #50, # 52. The players in their place were #74, #81, #55 and they were part of the rotation thru out the game.

Welcome everyone. I will be writing posts on Beechwood games for BGP this season. I am not on here to get caught up in the hype or taunting. I am here to just bring everyone the truth about games and keep it positive. So on to tonight's scrimmage. I will break it down by each part of the scrimmage.

 

Varsity

 

There were two 30 minute sessions played like real game conditions. The only exception was there were no returns when teams kicked off and punted. The first 30 minutes was back and forth with neither team gaining an upper hand. As mentioned in the thread, D1 prospect Drew Barker was not in pads and watched this scrimmage from the sideline. Conner moved Cameron Fogle to QB. It was obvious that both teams needed this scrimmage to work off the rust. Each team had two possessions during this period and both had some success moving the ball but would make a mistake that stopped the drives. I believe each team's best drive reached the 30 before stalling. There were some nice runs by Erdman and Nussbaum for Beechwood and Fogle had one or two 7 or 8 yards runs. Both teams were trying different plays to see what might work in a real game. At the end of this 30 minutes, the score was 0-0.

 

In the second 30 minutes of varsity time the offenses came to life. Beechwood had the ball first. They scored in about 7 plays with nice runs by Nussbaum and Erdman. The scoring run was about 20 yards up the middle by Erdman. Conner came right back on their next possession. It looked like Beechwood was going to stop Conner. But on a 3rd down play Fogle got through the line then went down the sideline about 60 yards for the score. Conner missed the extra point so the score stood Beechwood 7 Conner 6. On Beechwood's next possession Conner intercepted a pass at the Beechwood 40. The Cougars were able to work their way into the end zone for a score and take the lead. Conner 13-6. The scoring play was a 10 yard pass on 4th down that appeared to be misjudged by the Beechwood DB as it went right by his hands into the Conner receivers hands for the TD. The next series, if I remember correctly Beechwood tried Nussbaum at QB in a wildcat type formation. The series was 3 downs and out as there was a mixup in the backfield on 2nd down and an incomplete pass on 3rd down. The last series, Beechwood used a lot of subs getting looks at different players with only Nussbaum, Erdman and Lightner on the field from the starting unit. The rest of the defense (line and DB's) were all JV players. Conner picked up 3 or 4 first downs and then Fogle scored from about 20 yards out on a read option play. That read option was the main play Conner had success with. Final score Conner 20 Beechwood 6.

 

JV

 

The 20 minute JV game was different than the varsity. The offenses for both teams were able to move the ball. Beechwood scored on their first play - a very nice 80 yard run by junior Mitch Thomas that showed both his speed and cutting ability. Conner then took the ball on a steady drive down field and scored. The next two possessions by both teams were very similar. Each team made plays when they had to. Neither team's defense was able to make big stops when they needed them. Both teams had nice long drives that went for scores. Sorry that I don't know the names and details of who scored. There was no PA at the scrimmage and no rosters. The JV scrimmage ended in a 2 TD tie.

 

Freshman

 

The most impressive play of the night was by Beechwood's freshman team. They dominated the action. The Beechwood freshman team has a number of playmakers. Bankemper, Fieger, Combs, Stringer and others all made nice plays. Ethan Stringer was impressive in his first game as a Beechwood Tiger with several long runs. Fieger made some nice throws and runs from the QB position. Bankemper also had some nice runs. Combs made a very nice catch on a low ball and then bowled over two players to get into the end zone for a 20 yard TD score. There were also several nice runs by Beechwood's backup RB, #25, whose name I don't know. Conner's most impressive player was #7 who had a couple nice catches and a couple nice runs. Beechwood won the freshman scrimmage 5 TD - 1 TD.

 

 

So Everett, Kinman and McKenzie are JV players?

Great writeup, good to see someone watched this game and able to report accurately on it. From a varsity standpoint, BW has a lot of work to do on the DLine. I am sure Rash and the boys are already scrambling to make some changes, they looked like the young team they are last night. I know BW's policy, but I am hard pressed to not think that Combs could help them up from. Kid already looks like a man, runs well, and is extremely aggressive. From a frosh standpoint, dead on as well. BW simply loaded at the skill spots, and line looks like it will be a strength rather than a weakness. The Hermes kid from Conner is a great bookend to Combs on the lines, they are going to be tough to handle.
