A couple buddies and I had this discussion this past weekend....We all came to the same answer, but feel it's one of those that the writers will think long and hard about, so I'll ask BGP. Is Scott Rolen a HOF'er?

By the numbers probably not, however, it might depend on who the possible class is when its his turn. I tend to think that's the only reason Larkin as a HOFer this year.

Agreed and that may get him in with the veterans committee down the road.

I think so, especially given that I don't think he's been linked to PED's. Rookie of the year winner, 8 Gold Gloves, a silver slugger and 7 time allstar. He won the world series and batted .421 during that series. He's on the edge but I think he gets in but it may take a while. Baseball reference for what it's worth has him ranked the 82nd alltime batter.

Hall of Really good player. Not any kind of a transcendent type talent though. Once finished 4th in MVP voting but other than that has never been in contention for the award.

I agree with 2 hump camel. If the Reds make the playoffs this year and need a game winning hit, other than Votto I'd want him at the plate. I know there are guys with better numbers, but he seems to get big hits...Maybe I'm biased cuz I was there Saturday night.

It's an interesting debate, do you compare him to "batters" or "third basemen"?

Fair point. By 3B standards he may be. I've just never considered him a best of the best type of guy.

Not even close, especially if he is done after this year. 2050 hits, 313 HRs, 1275 RBI as of right now. No MVPs, Never led the league in ANY major offensive category. Only hit better than .300 twice. Hasn't had a very good year since 2006 If you look at Baseball-reference.com, only 1 of the 10 players he is most similar to is in the hall of fame, Tony Perez ( and he was a borderline HOFer). You could make the argument that he was the best third basemen of his generation but no way is he top 5 ever.....Schmidt, Brett, Chipper, Brooks Robinson, Boggs and Eddie Matthews are my top 6.... But all of those guys put up much bigger numbers. You also can't say he was ever one of the top 4 or 5 players in any one year of his era. Nice player, but not Hall of Fame.
