June 28, 201214 yr Not what I was saying at all. Stubbs doesn't even attempt to catch those. He won't battle the wall if he has to. He will jump up and attempt to catch a ball over the wall but rarely do you see him sacrifice his body on the wall or on a slide. I compare Heisey to Freel when it comes to sacrificing his body to try to make a play. Now I am not condoning doing that recklessly because we all know how often Freel was injured from playing like that. Stubbs relies on pure speed to run balls down but coming in and going back on balls is a real weakness in his game. I think it is because he doesn't read the ball off the bat that well and doesn't get a great jump. Some outfielders do this well and others don't. Stubbs is one of those that imo doesn't. Please stop, you're making yourself look bad.
June 28, 201214 yr Well that's what I thought at first because I thought EZ was always complaining about Stubbs, but then he went on to compliment Stubbs, and rag on Dusty so I was confused. Just tell us what you mean daggone it EZ. Okay here it is and right it down please so you'll remember it. I used to be a big Stubbs fan but I am becoming convinced that he will probably never be anything more than what he is today, a big swing and miss guy with dynamite speed who will steal bases at a 80% + clip. He will never be an accomplished bunter which would help his average tremendously due to the threat that he could do it. He will be an adequate outfielder because of his ability to go get balls as long as they are not over his head or in front of him. I'll always rag on Johnny B. aka the "toothpick" Baker because he is a below average manager imo.
June 28, 201214 yr  Please stop, you're making yourself look bad. So what makes you an authority on outfield play? Do you think Stubbs speed makes him an above average outfielder? He will never be the outfielder that Ken Griffey Jr. was in his prime nor will he come close to that. He will be an average outfielder with great speed.
June 28, 201214 yr ^I think he's an overrated defensive outfielder, but he's still MUCH MUCH better than a guy like Heisey, and better than average. Fact is, with his speed, he isn't having to sacrifice his body on those balls, because he's there with plenty of time to spare.

Not going to make much of an impact on his average over the course of the year.

June 28, 201214 yr Actually, him bunting would add an additional 6-10 hits to his total. Not going to make much of an impact on his average over the course of the year. it would probably add to his average considerably if he could learn to do it properly. The fact that he was a threat would draw the 3rd baseman and possibly the 1st baseman in more often resulting in a bigger hole to hit the ball through. Adding 10 hits to his numbers last year would have added 15 pts to his average making him a .259 hitter instead of .243.
June 28, 201214 yr Would bunting more really help Drew Stubbs? | Cincinnati Reds Last season, a caller into the local sports talk show was adamant: “Why isn’t Drew Stubbs bunting more? He’s wasting his speed swinging for home runs and all it does is lead to strikeouts!!” It’s a refrain heard frequently from fans in regards to the Reds center fielder. Frustrated by his strikeouts and intrigued by his speed – after all, he may be one of the ten fastest players in the game right now – many fans are looking for anything to get Stubbs to put the ball in play more. For many fans, strikeouts are a disaster, a waste of an at bat. And when that player has the speed of a gazelle, failing to put the ball in play is an even bigger problem. But what would it really mean if Drew Stubbs bunted more? Would it improve his stat line, like many fans believe, or would the more sabermetrically inclined be right in suggesting that more bunting would result in Stubbs trading home runs for singles and hurt his overall value? While bunting more would likely increase his average and decrease his strikeouts, it would also decrease his extra-base hits and walks. As the Joey Gaithright example shows, if he cannot manage to get on base at a good clip via the bunt, it might actually hurt his overall value.

June 28, 201214 yr Actually, him bunting would add an additional 6-10 hits to his total. Not going to make much of an impact on his average over the course of the year. Stubbs best year came in 2010, he hit .255 that year...Without his 27 infield hits that year he would have hit just .202...That includes only the 4 bunt hits he had in 583 PA...His value is based on his speed and without it he would struggle to keep a spot on a major league team...It would be nice if he could learn to maximize his speed a little more, like say a Willy Taveras or Carlos Gomez...Taveras in 2007 had 54 infield hits, 37 of which were bunts...Gomez in 2008 had 51 infield hits, 30 of which were bunts...Stubbs needs to stop pretending that he is Adam Jones... Just for fun... In 2010 if Stubbs would have had the 54 infield hits that Taveras had in 2007, that would have been an extra 27 hits making his average .307 plus cut down on his K's...Now what Taveras did was pretty remarkable but if Stubbs is one of the fastest players in the game and I think he is then he should at least get close to 40 infield hits and 10 bunt hits a year...Even if you give Stubbs 13 extra infield hits in 2010 on top of the 27 he had to bring his total to 40 his average would have been .280...If Stubbs fully utilized his Speed and stopped worrying about the long balls all the time his average would raise .15-20 points a year and his K numbers would decrease...It might not seem like much but with him either hitting lead-off or second in front of Votto it would improve his value to the team... He needs to find a way to get on base and his AVG on bunts is .450 which is actually pretty good, the difference between him and the more prolific bunters is Stubbs only bunts every 69 plate appearances compared to every 15-20 plate appearances...It wouldn't deflate his HR numbers that much either if he just bunted once every couple series to try and get something started, instead he would rather try to hit a HR which he is successful doing about once every 30 at bats...He strikes out once every 3 at bats so I don't think it would hurt to try to put one down and get something started every now and then...Even if he bunted 2x's more frequently than he does that would be a bunt attempt every 35 at bats and potentially cut down on some K's over that time frame plus allowing him a chance to get on base... Worse case scenario is you miss out on a handful of HR's a year most of which would probably be solo anyways and Increase his average while decreasing his K's and maybe his BB's...However you put pressure on the defense to play in on the corners more frequently opening up holes for him if he decides not to bunt and if a pitcher knows a guy is batting that likes to drop one down you can also mess with his concentration... Now the question is he a capable bunter? Probably not, they said he put in lots of work in the offseason but yet he has as many bunt hits as Heisey and Cozart who aren't near as fast...Either way your right it isn't going to equate to many more wins in a season if any, but it would make me as a fan happy to see Stubbs utilize his speed a bit more...He is one of the more frustrating players I have ever watched play...He has pop but not enough consistency with it to really make him a difference maker and he has speed but doesn't use it enough to really be a difference maker...So far he is a very disappointing prospect IMO...

June 28, 201214 yr Gonna be tough for people to complain about that one... Yep, I think that's pretty much the go to lineup although Ludwick is making it hard to keep him out of the lineup.
