High School Hoops in June

Featured Replies

Very undermanned from what I heard. Witte has had to play the 4 most of the summer due to lack of size and with his increased strength has helped on the boards and he didnt make the Morehead trip. Feggins the bruising soph didnt make the trip either and he is strong on the boards. Gronotte and Houliston sat out a few of the games as well with injuries and I believe they were down to 8 players. I agree, great experience for the young guys (Weyer, Brockett, Hergott) to get some VArsity action. I have NO Clue why Nick True is not participating in summer hoops but I can tell you this he would greatly benefit from it. He missed all of last summer with the shoulder injury. Seth Hope from what I understand has drank the Blue kool aid.

This week the Birds have two practice days and a scrimmage at Mason Co on Friday.

As far as key cogs....the Birds will need to get scoring from the trio of Turner/Witte and Houliston this season and everyone will need to attack the glass in order for them to compete.

The answer on True should be obvious. At 6'5" or 6" and a 240 playing the five, True goes into his jr year of basketball looking to get some experince so that he can contribute on varsity, but with limitations on his future in high school and not much future beyond. In football with those numbers going into his jr season he has recruiters calling and gets a stack of mail each week from some pretty big schools. So as to the question of just what he has been doing on the weekends, it is my understanding that he has accepted invitations to participate in camps at various major schools. I understand the folks at Penn State liked Mr.True very much. I know what I would do with my summer.

That is great to hear but the Birds will have had 8 full practices and 20+ games in the month of June and he hasnt shown for anything If that is his future great and I hope he can achieve his goals but this goes back to the thread What is Wrong with Highlands Basketball? Getting football players fresh off a State Championship season who have not picked up a ball for 8 months = rusty players who never pan out. I think Nick could definitely have a future in hoops as he showed tremendous strides from his 8th-9th grade years. Great work ethic, smart kid who really improved his quickness. But his hoops game will struggle with the lack of reps. No question though the Birds need his big frame in the paint this year. He also runs the floor very well.

Then there is your answer to the big question "what's wrong w/ Highlands BBall." 6'5" 240 that works year round on hoops w/ Nick's skill set might result in all region type career and little prospects beyond. Same skill set in football and opportunity abounds. Lets face it. Unless Nick grows 4 inches he does not play D-1 BBall. In football he is a D-1 prospect before he is able to drive a car. Kid has to make a decision about how to spend his summer.

Not saying he has to work year round just mix in a few weeks in June but if he has camps where he can get exposure then I understand. Looking forward to watching him this year on the gridiron.

Cov Cath is Playing in the St X Cincy team camp.

The tournament starts tonight, they play Colerain at 7:30

They destroyed Colerain last night.

They destroyed Winton Woods the night before.

They lost to Saint X (Cincy) by 3. They looked a little tired. They just finished off Winton Woods then had to play a rested saint X .

I think they play saint x again tonight since they are the only two teams with 1 loss.

Everyone in the gym was impressed how well Ruthsatz plays both ends of the floor. Reminds me of Kevin Listermans game but much better all around than Kevin. Who by the way was coaching Colerain last night and was not a happy camper getting destroyed by his alma mater.

Other notables - Schuh shows signs of a real solid player in all aspects. Great attitude. The sky is the limit.

Tobler is an animal. Plays against bigger guys all day and just flat out produces. Uses both hands and either gets fouled or scores inside the paint.

Shultz gives them good minutes. Knows his role and is solid.

Parker Keller just keeps coming at you. Hustles his tail off. Gives starting guards a break and flat out defends.

Thanks everyone for the kind words. Surgery is required and is scheduled for June 28th. Nate has a positive outlook and a goal of missing ZERO varsity games.

Surgery today was a success. Now the rehab begins. Thanks again to everyone for the kind words and prayers.

Wish him our best from the spindoc fam.
