Catholic organizations across the country file suit against contraception mandate

Featured Replies

Some of the most influential Catholic institutions in the country filed suit against the Obama administration Monday over the so-called contraception mandate, in one of the biggest coordinated legal challenges to the rule to date.

Claiming their "fundamental rights hang in the balance," a total of 43 plaintiffs filed a dozen separate federal lawsuits challenging the constitutionality of the requirement. Among the organizations filing were the University of Notre Dame, the Archdiocese of New York and The Catholic University of America.

Health care and religion should not be intertwined...

Thoughts?

The government starts dictating mandatory actions by its citizens. Who would have thought that would lead to conflicts?

It's not health care and religion, G. It's governement mandates of what employers must offer in health insurance coverage and religion.

Fully support these suits.

Government and religion should not be intertwined. Stay out Obama.

This is my old college teammate being interviewed regarding this. It will fire you up, one way or the other.

I read the article again and I have a better understanding of the issue.

In a case like this individuals have a choice not to work for a religious based organization which puts me near the fence on this issue.

I guess I think about it this way, if Catholic hospitals didn't dictate to their customers some things based on religious belief I would have almost no problem with religious organizations saying if you want to work for us this is the way our healthcare works. However, since that isn't the case it is hard to for me to fault the government getting involved.

I am sure most of us agree these issues are a slippery slope.

Sundays are now turning into our weekly political rally.

I have, but not w this regularity. That being said, every private business and organization better be supporting the Catholic fight bc this has the potential to open up some doors to intrude on rights granted by Constitution and the Bill of Rights in the name of other Fundamental Rights.

Absolutely correct, Mex. THIS IS the slippery slope! Catholic instutions have every right to follow the dictates of good conscience and moral truth in their practices, and to apply those beliefs in the way they serve the community. If you happen to disagree with those beliefs, you are free to go elsewhere for services.

The Obama administration is attempting to curtail the right to freedom of religion in America. We must ask ourselves, which fundamental, constitutionally guaranteed right will they attack next? Maybe you think this issue doesn't effect you now...but it will. And if not this issue, then maybe the next. We all should be outraged at this flagrant suspension of the Constitution!

I've heard it mentioned at Mass.

When I attend religious services it is for the purpose of feeling closer to God. A politically motivated message would certainly make me leave.
