RonnieThePopular Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 I noticed several posts at the start of the season that had the 14th as weak. But now that some of these teams have made some noise against non-reigon opponents (Example:Lee winning the Country Music Tourney), do u all still have the 14th as weak? Or are some of these teams better than you thought they would be...(Lee, Jackson City, Buckhorn, JBS). I think the 14th is the most competitive reigon with 1-5 being very close.
sixtyfeetsix Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 I see the 14th region being very even in talent this year. There are a few stand out players, but for the most part the teams are very competitive with one another. I'll say this....most of them are exciting to watch..and you know as I do..people in Eastern KY love basketball...this is true for 14th region fans as well
themansnowyriver Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 Once Leslie gets lined out they are the second best team in the mountains. PCC can play with anybody in the mountains outside of SL. This region is not down as many think.
Augger Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 I wouldnt say weak. The 14th is stronger now than it has been in several years. Anyteam from 1 -8 has shot to win the region. Several teams are playing very well and competitve. This could be the year that a smaller school represents the 14th in the Sweet Sixteen
RoundLeather Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 Anytime a small school, or as in this case several small schools, have a good team and start to be competitive with the bigger schools that have like one million students to choose from, the old saying "the 14th region is weak this year" starts. Some even said it during the late 80's when Buckhorn went to state 2 years in a row. Sorry folks, the region was not weak, Buckhorn was tough, like it or not. I'm not camparing teams here, just saying what I said in the first few lines.
Sportsfan33 Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 While some of the small schools are having better years than usual that is not why there is talk of the region being weak. The talk is because of how good the teams were in the past few years. From '02 to '05 the 14th region was stronger than it had been in years. During that stretch teams were loaded. Look at Perry Central for example. The best teams they've had were probably their '02-'03, and '03-'04 teams. those two teams could play with most, not all, teams in the state not just the teams in the mountains. This years PCC team wouldn't play within 20 points of either of those two teams, but yet they are one of the top teams in the region. That's not saying the teams this year aren't good because there are several good teams in the 14th. The problem is there aren't any GREAT teams in the 14th this year.
Coach Big Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 Leslie Co, and Hazard have both started off bad but dont over look them both. I would still put both in my top 5 in the region. People can say what they want everyone knows Hazard and Leslie will be two top teams. PCC is on top right now.

LCHS 1996 Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 Some may call the 14th a weak region, but IMO it is always one of the most competitive regions. Always a handful of teams with potential to win the region!
BasketballJones Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 Look at Cantrell's rankings. According to that it looks like the 15th is the weak region!
ZinMaster Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 I think that on a State-wide level the 14th region is weak. There is not a team in the 14th that can contend for a state title this year. That being said, there are some good teams that can compete against other good teams, but there are no upper-tier teams in the mountains this year IMO.
HDE Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 The 14th seems to be pretty weak overall. How many of this year's teams could play with Perry Central, Hazard or Breathitt of last year?
RonnieThePopular Posted January 5, 2006 Author Posted January 5, 2006 I think Estill County has the talent to have competed with those schools. But talent isnt the whole pie.
mountainwarrior Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 i dont think the region is weak i think that the teams are off to a slow start i mean some of our lower 14th region teams have played well against middle and high ranked teams from other regions, granted there are no super powerhouses this year but the talent is still there just not all compiled on one team or in one city, talent is spread this season from Hazard to Booneville, and everyone will start to realize that the region is still strong. I dont think we should put the kids down and all them weak when they go out and give it there all everynight, Strong is giving it your all when you have nothing less to give
