The state polls aren't meant to predict the teams in the Sweet Sixteen.

 

Do you not rank a Lexington Catholic or Henry Clay in the top 20 because you already have Scott County ranked? Even if you rank Perry Central in the top 20 under your idea, that goesn't guarantee the Commodores will be the team who represents the 14th Region, so then even your poll would be wrong.

 

What if Henry Clay upset Scott County and won the region, but they wouldn't have been in the top 20, even though they were one of the best 20 teams, because you already had Scott County there.

Therefore, proving my point. They aren't, nor will they probably ever be. Thus, A poor system. Just because a team has a poorer power ranking doesn't mean they will not see Rupp Arena. By the same token, a high power ranking doesn't gaurantee a spot in the final tourney.

 

Power rankings don't say the "16 teams that will make it to Rupp" if we knew that than we wouldnt even play a district or region. No one said that the teams ranked will for sure see Rupp you need to use you mind and think a little the power rankings can be accurate because the 2nd best team in one region can be better than a team that is #1 in another region. It's ok if you think the rankings do not mean anything but im sure that there will still be power rankings no matter how much you complain about them.

I agree. There will always be power rankings. It's leads to debate and discussion throughout the season. The media can use them in the newspaper and radio to get an idea of how a contest may turn out. That's just the way it is.

I mean, Perry Central is the top rated team in the 14th, but they would be just 11th in the 11th region, and 10th in the 7th. That means there's 16 teams rated higher than Perry Central in those two regions alone!

Of course, there's definetly going to be a 14th region team in the state tournament....because there's 16 regions and the 14th has to have a representative. But that's not a poll, it's just the winners of each region, and we won't know that particular top 16 until the second week of March.

I dont feel like the fourteenth is too weak because Perry Central beat a really good Fraklin Co. team in the Kentucky Prep Classic in Frankfort. I think Perry and Leslie and Hazard can compete with many of the top teams in other regions as well.

That was a good win for the Commodores.....especially since it was played in Franklin County's back door.

This was a big win over a very highly regarded and talented Franklin Co. team. So much for the 14th being weak and not able to compete with some of the better Central Kentucky teams.

Just out of curiosity but who holds Franklin in such high regard? It looks like only 3 of their wins have been over teams with winning records.

Franklin Co. is highly regarded by the people who invited them to participate in the Kentucky Prep Classic and by knowledgeable basketball minds if you understand what I’m saying. They were rated preseason #7 in the 11th Region by the Cats Pause (Keith Taylor of the Winchester Sun). They have a starting front line of 6-7, 6-5, 6-4, 2 very good starting guards, a good bench and are athletic. They were also rated #28 in the State, #7 in the 11th Region by Dave Cantrall prior to the game with Perry Central (Top 10% of all KY High School Teams). They are currently rated #41 in the State, #9 in the 11th Region by Dave Cantrell and #35 in the State, #8 in the 11th Region by the Litkenhous Ratings (Top 14% of all KY High School Teams). The only team from the 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th, or 16th Regions rated higher than them is South Laurel. Obviously these Power Ratings are not 100% correct, but I think it shows they are a well thought of team. They have only lost two games within the State of Kentucky. In the Highly Regarded (Do you dispute this) 11th Region being near the middle is a pretty fair accomplishment. While not in the same class as a Scott Co., Lexington Catholic, Lafayette, Henry Clay, Tates Creek, or Bryan Station they are still well respected within their Region. I spoke to coaches from the 11th Region that feel they would be a tough match up in the Regional Tournament. I hope this answers your question.

I wasn't really disputing anything but thanks for the answer. If I read it right then a win by the top team (by most accounts) in the 14th over a middle of the road team in the 11th is a good win and proves that the 14th is not weak this year?

As for as polls go: The intent is to "predict" the best teams in the state, correct? What good, then, is the state tourney if you feel the best teams aren't in it? Isn't the top 20 poll a "prediction" of the top twenty? Therefore, by picking one team from each region you would be just as, if not more so, accurate would you not? However, your top 20 would be a good guage of who could be there come March.

 

As far as the Hypo goes: You'd just drop them from the top twenty just like teams get moved out of, or into, the poll right now. Power rankings increase and decrease do they not? Teams rise and fall in rating and ranking, correct? The only difference I'm suggesting is to have the top 16 as the top team from each region. (Regardless of who they are!)

 

Anyway, it's been a fun topic of debate. Which is what these forums and threads are for.

It wouldn't be a true top 16 or top 20 because it's being adjusted to get one team per region included.

 

If you are trying to "predict" the best team in the state, would Henry Clay or Lexington Catholic have a better shot at winning the state, either though neither is No. 1 in their region, than Perry Central or Paintsville? While their chances of getting there aren't as good, they have a much, much better chance of winning if they make it.

 

If you wanted a list of regional favorites that would be OK, but that wouldn't be a poll.

If Perry Central over Franklin County is the best win the 14th can claim out of the region, then I'd say it's relatively weak. Are there others that are more notable?
