What is Estill missing besides talent?

I think Estill County has the talent to have competed with those schools. But talent isnt the whole pie.

True Statement, just take the KCC Patriots this year as an example. They have talant, but something has gone wrong and they look bad right now.

Anytime a small school, or as in this case several small schools, have a good team and start to be competitive with the bigger schools that have like one million students to choose from, the old saying "the 14th region is weak this year" starts. Some even said it during the late 80's when Buckhorn went to state 2 years in a row. Sorry folks, the region was not weak, Buckhorn was tough, like it or not. I'm not camparing teams here, just saying what I said in the first few lines.

 

 

I feel you've misunderstood the question. Or, perhaps, I have in saying the 14th Region will always be looked down upon, for good reason, by the rest of the state. When was the last time a 14th Region team won a State Championship? Something like 1955 or so? Some little school like Carr Creek? This IMO is the underlying point of the question. 50 years and counting ladies and gentleman - So, yes you can say this is a weak Region. This Region, back in the day, competed state wide with even our smaller schools: Hazard, Vicco, Hindman and Carr Creek to name a few. Present day, however, has teams licking their chops when they get the 14th Region in the first round of the tourney. You might say its an automatic bid to the elite eight. A good warm up game for the second round. It's unfortunate that it's like this but it is. I just hope I live long enough to see a Championship team from the 14th.

Gotcha! I agree that the 14th does not compete with other regions as well as times past. I understand now. I was just saying that in recent years, I feel the region is just as strong only now there are more than 3 teams competing to go to state. There are like 6, I mean 7 or 8 no maybe 9, ahh there are several.

You better believe it. They played them pretty tought last year for the first two quarters and were beat to death down low with Breathitt's big man having 9 fouls at halftime but only 2 in the books. I think the world of the kid, but his own Mom admitted that he should have fouled out at halftime. Jackson's starting center was also on the bench with a twisted knee. This years Jackson squad is much more physical, much more aggressive, much quicker, much improved defensively , and much improved offensively, and rebounds a heck of a lot better. So yes I think they could, along with Lee, Leslie, and some others. After a couple of years when some of these schools graduate some of their talent, everyone can go back to saying the region is tough again when the BIG schools are back at the top alone. Powell went to state a few years ago (when this region was so tough) and I feel that any top 10 team in the region this year could have beat them. I know it upsets the bigger schools to lose to or be played tough by much smaller schools, but this season will not see much David and Goliath. We are now showing King Kong v/s Godzilla! If you missed the first couple of showings, the 14th Region will be replaying it all the way through March! l

Same story here at Lee County Roundleather. Lee played within 4 or 5 all night AT Breathitt last year but couldnt hit crucial shots. Hundley had his way in the first quarter, scoring 15 i believe in that period, but was held to only 7 more points i believe the rest of the game. Lee just couldnt hit the shots to put them down. I think this years team, with Fetters playing such good basketball and our deep bench, Lee would have given them a lot more to deal with.

What the 14th doesn't have is that team with a target on there back like usual. Usually P.C.C. is the team, but like someone had mentioned earlier, 8-10 teams has a legitamate shot at winning it. And that is the first time in as long as I can remember!

Makes it a lot funner to wathc these games, huh?

Yes and it tickles me and these ball players/fans ect to death. They are no longer 106.5 they moved to 97.3. They balance each schools games out pretty good.
