New Era In Whitley County Colonel Football

Featured Replies

Coach Campbell is a great football coach and built that program from nothing. I think he should have been able to resign on his terms after what he has done with the program. If he had let some people to close to the program and they led to his demise, as JudgeOne said then shame on them.

Coach Campbell had a record of 113-62 for a 65% winning pct. going back to 1990. I'm not sure exactly when he started, but it would be interesting to know what the winning pct. was prior to Campbell. I would guess that it was lower than 35%.

Sorry. I think you are hearing me wrong. Let me rephrase my post.

The Whitley Co running backs/linebackers who transferred to Corbin were the 2 best players on the Whitley Co team. Corbin fans said over and over that the transfer was a result of Whitley coaches. Now people from Corbin are posting that Whitley should not have made a change. That is my point. First Campbell and crew was bad, and now they are good? Make up your minds.

Then Whitley is making a coaching change and Corbin fans say "hey Adams and Ysidro come to Corbin." Thats my other point. That dont seem right to me. And yes, I know they are good coaches, thats not the question.

Back to the topic, good luck Gentry. And it sure would be nice to keep the kids in Whitley County in the future.

How many kids have transferred from Whitley Co. in the last five years? My guess is that it is Whitley has had several less than say Corbin or even McCreary Central(had 3 transfer to another local school before last season). There was just a lot more outcry over the two that went to Corbin due to the fact they played on teams that went deep into the playoffs and because they developed into such good players. But my point is that Whitley has actually done a good job of keeping their players at Whitley. There have also been kids who transferred in at Whitley in case you have forgotten.

.........DEVELOPED into such good players....like they couldnt play before they got there

I know his winning percentage had fell off a little these past few years, but to say a new era of football is coming to Red Storm fans. It was not to long ago when W.C. teams were winning 9 and 10 games a season. I guess the people who wanted him out forgot about where the program came from.

I agree....I hear Coach Gentry is doing away with RED STORM....anyone know for sure...

Corbin fans are experts are running off good coaches, just ask Cotton Adams and Mike Whitaker, and Coach Adams had a state Championship. Adams also had been there along time, longer than Coach Campbell was at Whiltey. Lets not make a martyre of the man. He was a coach who in the eyes of the person who makes the decisions was not getting the job done to their satifaction and was let go. He was not fired completely, he still has a great job in the system. Much better than what was done to Adams or Whitaker.

It appears that everyone was on the inside of the "walls of the program" with everything that has been posted here.

A little reserch shows that Campbell's record was only 20-20 over the past 4 years and had missed the playoffs 2 of the last three. Would Corbin stand for that?

Corbin is just a little bit different situation than Whitley. They have ages of tradition. Red Storm Football was built by Campbell. He should have had the opportunity to right the ship, there was no writing on the wall. Im sure he was looking forward to coaching the next year, with the players he had coming back and also knowing that other district teams may have suffered a little bit from graduation.

Mike Campbell is the last one to want anybodys sympathy. He is still alive, so no one is trying to make a martyr out of him.

You are right Corbin is different from Whiltey. But Whitley fans want a winner just like Corbin, so what is the difference? Campbell had 17 years to produce and he did, but there is no doubt since the move to 4A the program had slipped some. Sometimes teams like people need a breath of fresh air. I would not be suprised to see Coach Campbell back on the sidelines at some point as head coach or a top assistant at a good school.

There is a lot more to the story on Adams and Whitaker

Good point Apex,

Whitley fans want a winner and deserve so. Have you looked at 4A football. This is a different league. Campbell was a winner and times change. Gentry is goi ng into a gold mine. Campbell was agood football coach, but the main thing is he loved those kids

Judgeone,

I disagree on one point, Campbell IS a winner. He always is a professional and is a respected coach throughout the state. Campbell built a solid program and what he did should never be belittled or dismissed, but sometimes change is not a bad thing.

Oh, Do Tell. Defend the position of running off a coach with a state championship to his credit.

Campbell not a winner? You take his last 4 years, in 4A to make a point. Look at the 5 years, I believe they won 8 or 9 his first year in that class. Three out of 5 in the playoffs. I hope Mr. Gentry is that successful, and has the successful type of program that Campbell had during the 90's, and I say this with no malice.

You said change is not bad, but Campbell should have had the right to change it or maybe just a watchout at the beginning of the year.

I agree with judgeone about him loving the kids, but he also built character and integrity in his players.
