New Era In Whitley County Colonel Football

Featured Replies

Campbell not a winner? You take his last 4 years, in 4A to make a point. Look at the 5 years, I believe they won 8 or 9 his first year in that class. Three out of 5 in the playoffs. I hope Mr. Gentry is that successful, and has the successful type of program that Campbell had during the 90's, and I say this with no malice.

You said change is not bad, but Campbell should have had the right to change it or maybe just a watchout at the beginning of the year.

I agree with judgeone about him loving the kids, but he also built character and integrity in his players.

My last comment may have been misunderstood, that is to say that regardless of record Mike Campbell is a winner and always will be.

I really don't think that him caring about the kids and building character was a problem or even questioned, everyone knows that he did, but is that enough?

I guess you could say it is really beyond debate, what is done is done, now it is time to move on and support the new staff and coach get ready for the up coming year.

Ram Man,

I totally agree with you. I think that Campbell was a victim of his own success in a lot of ways. That is a very tight nit group down there and Campbell made it that way. I have had several of his former players tell me that he stays in contact with them and tries to help them any way that he can. Coaching isn't always x's and o's.I had also heard that the new coach was going around as much as 7 months ago telling everybody that he would be the new coach at Whitley. That is flat out wrong.

From Riherds scoreboard

2005- 4 wins 7 losses 1st round playoff loss

2004- 5 wins 5 losses No Playoffs

2003- 7 wins 3 losses No Playoffs

2002- 5 wins 6 losses 1st round playoff loss

2001- 9 wins 2 losses 1st round playoff loss (first year in 4A)

2000- 10 wins 2 losses 2nd round playoff loss (last year in 3A)

1999- 8 wins 3 losses 1st round playoff loss

1998- 8 wins 3 losses 1st round playoff loss

1-6 in playoff appearances

30-23 since moving to 4A but only 21-21 last 4 years.

15-23 when playing 4A teams.

The reocrd shows a slip over the past few years.

This is what really bothers me about the whole thing.

There is a lot more to the story on Adams and Whitaker

Corbin had no choice but to make a change on one of these two, the other was not handled right either in my opinion.

I agree with you on both post 4 chs.............Apex, could you give us # on other area teams that have been on the 4a level. Such as Perry Central , Clay Co. Nl and Sl even though they have always been 4A . I am curious what there # look like, compared to Whitley

From Riherds: South Laurel

2005- 9 wins 3 losses 2nd round playoff loss

2004- 7 wins 4 losses 1st round playoff loss

2003- 6 wins 5 losses 1st round playoff loss

2002- 2 wins 8 losses No playoffs (Irwin's first year)

2001- 1 wins 9 losses No playoffs ( Leger's last year)

2000- 4 wins 7 losses 1st round playoff loss

1999- 11 wins 2 lossses 3rd round playoff loss

Since moving to 4A

40-38 overall

29-25 verses 4A games

3-4 in playoffs

Leger was 2 years from a third round playoff loss and he got the ax. It is a tough profession.

What about the rest.I think and I am not for sure , but Whitleys record vs SL is either 7-3 or 6-3. I know that they have lost the last three.

I am not sure what your point is, but if you want you can go check it out for yourself, I used SL out of your list because it was closest geographicly to Whitley.

I think what it shows and what your are saying is that Whitley was slipping, but Mike Campbell should have been given another year, or that it was handled badly, or both. It being handled badly is a matter of opinion and I don't know the politics of it like some people appear to, but with the improvement shown by SL it looks like the people in charge may have had a quick reaction and done the popular (blaming the coach) thing and tried a new guy.

judgeone,

I heard the same things as probably as others did. I disregarded them as pure speculation and rumor, because I never heard them from Mr. Gentry. Looking back though, the way things worked out makes you wonder.

Im like 4chs, this is what would bother some the most.

The title for the thread was a "New Era". There was not a whole lot wrong with the old one. I agree with the people that say the Red Storm can have success at that level, I think that is has unlimited potential. They will be loaded next year, and should have a extremely good year. Campbell should have the right to develop the program. If there was somthing that was lacking then he should have been told he needed to fix it or else. They should have gave him a choice after all he has done, and to knowlege and reading the paper there was not one.

Randy Leger left coaching to enter administration and spend more time with his family - on his own terms. Get your facts straight before you use the phrase "got the ax" in reference to someone leaving a position.

1 a : a fixed point in time from which a series of years is reckoned b : a memorable or important date or event; especially : one that begins a new period in the history of a person or thing

2 : a system of chronological notation computed from a given date as basis

3 a : a period identified by some prominent figure or characteristic feature b : a stage in development (as of a person or thing) c : a large division of geologic time usually shorter than an eon

By defination it is a new era. Don't try to read things into it.

My point is this Apex. SL is a good program and I have a lot of respect for coach Irwin.I was stating if you looked at the schools who has moved into 4A or let's say back and forth(teams that have been on the bubble you will find that Whitley has been successful. You were very quick to throw out SL . I was just wondering about the rest.Teams will go through cycles of players. You musty keep a good talent pool coming ,that is the coaches resposibility, but a small 4a school sometimes will have bumps in the road. The cycle is getting ready to turn at Whitley because of the players that are returning, plus SL lost 18 seniors grc 17 seniors mad. cent 20 seniorsThat is my point APex. Whitley would have competed for the district title next year and they ( administration) knew it.

I have not seen anyone dispute what you are saying. The reality of the situation is that Mike Campbell is no longer coach, and as a group on this sight we are not going to change that. I can see how he would be disappointed and angry. You seem to have more knowledge than anyone here, so you must be a big supporter of the program, so why not move on and get behind the new coach. If you are a true supporter of the program then you should hope that they do win the district, and tearing down the new coach won't help. Right?

Good definition Thunderstruck, I was not trying to read things into it. I just read it. You say it is a "New Era". I never said that it wasnt, I did say there was not much wrong with the "old one". Seems to me you are the one reading things into it.

judgeone, I totally agree with you about the cycles and the smaller schools in each class. Whitley should be at the top of the district fight, I dont know if the administration realized this.
