March 16, 201214 yr Why would you pull your starters in a single elimination tournament against a team that just pulled off the greatest comeback in NCAA Tournament history??? BYU had the greatest comeback, WKU had the greatest in the last 5 minutes. Who tracks this stuff?
March 16, 201214 yr Why would you pull your starters in a single elimination tournament against a team that just pulled off the greatest comeback in NCAA Tournament history??? Up 25, with a minute to go? Really?
March 16, 201214 yr Up 25, with a minute to go? Really? No Kentucky player was putting forth enough effort with a minute left to sustain an injury. FWIW, they weren't up 25, either.
March 16, 201214 yr No Kentucky player was putting forth enough effort with a minute left to sustain an injury. FWIW, they weren't up 25, either. UK also had some subs in at that point.
March 16, 201214 yr UK also had some subs in at that point. There is no such thing as "garbage minutes" in a single elimination, postseason tournament.
March 16, 201214 yr Am I being picky but it seemed sometimes that Davis never made the effort to try and get at shots he used to always go for. Is he hurt, tired or just pacing himself? As great as he played, and I know WKU was pulling him out intentionally, he just did not seem to recovery the way he did just 2 or 3 weeks ago. Davis had 16 points, 9 rebounds & 7 blocks. Tough to fault his effort.
March 16, 201214 yr I am a big critic of Cal not pulling the starters, but they allowed WKU to go on that big run at the end, no killer instinct! But at the end call a quick TO and get them in.
March 16, 201214 yr During the regular season I would agree with letting the subs in the game. Come tournament time I do not. There is an injury risk very second in the court so it doesn't matter. WKU played theirs starters so UK left theirs in. Plus it isn't like they won't get a chance next game. Now if it's the championship and UK is winning by a wide margin with a minute and a half left then put in the subs if you want.
March 16, 201214 yr I am a big critic of Cal not pulling the starters, but they allowed WKU to go on that big run at the end, no killer instinct! But at the end call a quick TO and get them in. What is the benefit to getting a kid 30 second of PT in mop up time? Do you think they even want to play those last 15 - 30 seconds?
March 16, 201214 yr This thread is making me ill. I cannot believe all the comments about playing the bench. Wow. Cal is locked in on 7. It is what it is. He always talks about his 3.8MM assistant coaches. Only at UK. Sickening.
March 16, 201214 yr Yes, they do . IF it would have stayed around 30 i'd tell them if it gets to 22 or 23 they cime back out. But it didn't stay there, so I really don't have an issue in this game
March 16, 201214 yr Seemed like he played pretty well to me.... Like I said, "Am I being picky?" He played well but I remember nights against better teams when he literally recovered for blocks like no one I've ever seen before. I just wondered if the physical play the last month has taken a toll.
March 16, 201214 yr What is the benefit to getting a kid 30 second of PT in mop up time? Do you think they even want to play those last 15 - 30 seconds? I remember Joe Hall subbing in the '78 title game to honor his starters and get bench warmers' names in the score book. Duke cut it down to 4 before Lee made the margin 6. It left some (Feinstein in his book for instance) believing the game was closer than it actually was.
March 16, 201214 yr Up 25, with a minute to go? Really? It was 30 with 6 minutes left, and 15 with 1:30 left. So yeah, I don't have any problem with him keeping the starters in as WKU is making up 15 points in 4:30.
