  1. Such sad news...prayers from Grant Co.
  2. Great story! I am so glad she never gave up & did everything she could to come back! Good luck this year!
  3. Congrats to Jaclyn & the Lady Demons! Jaclyn is very deserving!
  4. Exactly! Discipline! Sports has taught my kid to be organized, stay on task & to utilize her time well. All valuable skills including those learned in the midst of competition and a team environment. All skills needed when she ultimately enters the "real" world. Tools learned to make me feel that she will be prepared for success. It comes down to a strong work ethic & confident independence she has gained by working so hard! In understanding why we have trouble keeping kids on athletic teams, I have also thought that there has been a shift in how we as parents & a society in general approach discipline...first thought used to be when dealing with a child/coach or even child/teacher situation was to question the kid's actions first, adults second. It seems today we question the adult first. I often have to catch myself when discussing a conflict my daughter may have from immediately coming to her defense. I have to say to myself...I am not to old to remember what I used to do at that age! I am not saying we should not ever side with our child in situations, but we must remember they are teenagers.
  5. My daughter made a decision in middle school to drop from 3 sports to 2, basketball & soccer. She began playing at the high school level in both sports in the 8th grade. She also played club basketball (AAU) since the 6th grade. It can be done & they can be highly successful in 2 sports. I think the difference deciding on whether they should play in more than one also depends on what they can play at the next level. When you talk about a DI player in a sport, that is a whole different issue. We all know that those are very few & far between. Most of us are talking about possible DII, but for the most part DIII & NAIA. It becomes even more important at those levels to have decent grades & test scores. We did as a family have to decide how to handle "the car" when she got to that point. She does not have the time to work a part-time job to pay for her "extras." We told her that as long as she gave 100% & kept her grades up, that we did not want her to work. She will be a Senior, has a 4.0, scored very high on the ACT & has college interest in her in both soccer & basketball. Her toughest decision by far now is deciding which sport to play at the next level. If she thought she could, she would play both. Crazy8's has a point, it's all about work ethic. Not excuses. No one's fault but your own when it comes right down to it...pick yourself up from whatever it may be, a bad game, an injury, a nightmare of a coach or program & WORK. But the sad part is that parents seem to be the ones that start the process dishing out the excuses. When we talk of politics, a "bad" coach, a "ball hog" player...all of the usual stuff. The kids have big ears just waiting for a reason why they are sitting the bench. We all complain, but we have to remember that kids are listening & we do an incredible amount of damage that cannot be undone. Do we tell them after bashing someone or something that we are just venting? Usually not, we don't teach them to handle frustration or adversity very well, we just find excuses to justify the frustration, whatever it may be. I am as guilty as the next parent I guess, just thank my lucky stars that my daughter didn't hear most of it & worked her tail off in spite of me!
  6. A lot of very good points! I have always thought (this does happen in our district) that when you cut a player in the middle school from a team, that you almost certainly cut them forever. I think cutting kids in those early years directly affects the high school program. There will always be players that lose interest & find other pursuits, but think about these numbers...a 6th grade program that has 35-40 kids come out for the team. You cut. You don't field 2 teams, or even maybe a "practice" team. Do those kids ever come back? No. These kids that are cut don't even have an intramural program to fall back on to even give them a chance the next year. They are just lost. Pretty sure they may be those kids in the hall the high school coaches wonder why aren't playing!
  7. Agree...the 8th is wide open I think! Anderson is still solid from what I hear. Simon Kenton is also still strong, although I believe Conley will be missed more than expected.
  8. My daughter started out playing AAU ball with Club Cougars & Perry Seal several years ago when they fielded 2 teams, the current group and another older group. Perry's work schedule prevented him from continuing with 2 teams & they dropped the older group. The Schroer's are a wonderful family & do a great job. My daughter still says that Perry was one of the best coaches she ever had! Congrats to them!
  9. She's back! :thumb: An article in the Grant County News this week: The Long Road Back: GCHS' Gorby overcomes torn ACL to earn All-Star spot The last seven months have had their share of highs and lows for Grant County High School girls basketball senior Candace Gorby. 10. My deepest sympathy & prayers to the family.
  11. 2 is correct of the 3 seniors on the team. Sarah Johnson signed earlier with Spalding to play basketball. The third senior (Hopperton) was 2nd in her class & will be attending NKU to study.
  12. I double checked spelling on her name...it is Salena! I had it incorrect in the original post.

  15. She will be helping coach from the bench this month. She is doing everything now but compete. No brace, full strength & just about ready to go. She plays soccer as well & will be playing this season. Another month of healing time is the plan. She will have the green light, no holds barred on July 16 & will be making her debut in some basketball stuff in July. Very motivated young lady! She has done an amazing job rehabbing.
  16. In the Grant County News this past week: On May 21, the road to the University of the Cumberlands was completed as McIntosh signed with the NAIA school, where she will play on the junior varsity team for coach Lissi Fuller, who is a former standout at the University of the Cumberlands. McIntosh became the second member of the Lady Braves to sign this year. http://www.grantky.com/cgi-bin/storyviewnew.cgi?195+Sports.200864-1850-195-195012.Full+Sports Selena will also be participating in track at the university. Way to go & best of luck! It's nice to see the girls we talk about & support on BGP's continuing to play beyond high school. Nice to see coming out of Grant County! Keep it up! :ylsuper:
  17. I will be there for a game or 2!
  18. It is a great place to let the girls get out there & just play. Nice facility & considering the number of vehicles, an easy place to get in & out of for the drive there. Any time they can spend with their hands on a basketball is good!
  19. In district 32, the SK gals previously mentioned, Stith & Wilhoit from Williamstown, Dixon from WV, Gorby & Workman from Grant Co. I also agree with all the great players listed out of the other districts.
  20. I don't know the exact numbers, but Sarah is a 4.0 student & scored very well on the ACT. Makes it easy for an institution to offer a great package. My understanding is it was a fantastic offer she could not pass up. She will not need to pay for much, if anything at all.
  21. Grant County senior guard Sarah Johnson signed a letter of intent to continue her basketball career at Spalding University (Louisville, KY) this past Wednesday in a ceremony at Grant County High School. Congrats to Sarah & good luck in your college career! :dancingpa:dancingpa:dancingpa Congrats also to Coach Guffey...wins & losses are not the only measure of success. Helping players achieve their dream of playing college ball is something to be proud of! I wish you continued success in achieving that goal for your first seniors & your future seniors. :thumb:
  22. I spoke with Bert. He is not interested in going back to coaching at this time & has no plans on applying for the position. In his words, "I would not give up that time with my daughter."
  23. Way to go Simon Kenton! Start packing your bags...you're going to State!!:dancingpa
