  1. Sometimes the best places to coach are orphanages. One year we pulled the upset in a district tournament and was going to play for the championship in two days. We are celebrating on the field and after I tell them to start thinking about the championship game my guys are leaving the field. One of my players tell me he is going to miss the championship game to go to the beach. I was floored and told him to ask his parents if he could stay with a friend so he could be at the game. I have never in my life ever thought I would hear a human being say this - he was going with a buddy of his and his parents were not going. After looking at him speechless for several moments I told him he had time to back out of the trip and make the right decision. He went to the beach and we won the district. On Sunday night before the Regional tournament is to start he calls me wondering why I am not letting him play in the regional tournament. I gave the whole commitment and making the right choice speech. His parents were furious at me and couldn't understand why I was upset. He transferred to another school and I was never more happier to see him go. I know this sort of gets off subject but hearing the post about parents got me thinking about this. Sorry.
  2. Not to be rude but you have yet to say why my compromise won't work. It may not work but there has to be a reason for it failing. You break each class up and get rid of the district runner up going to the region. With fewer teams by going to classes you could eliminate the sectional tournament. Now the season is short by a week. Take that week and have the 4 class champions play a tournament. Now you have 4 state champions and 1 super champion. Now other than "It doesn't work that way. You either have classes or you don't" please explain why it won't work.
  3. First I know this will never work because it is too radical of an idea and it would cause the entire nation to have to do it. Have baseball / softball switch seasons with football. Think about it before you start bashing how crazy of an idea it is. WIN FOR BASEBALL / SOFTBALL - the weather is horrible during the preseason and a few weeks into the season. These are sports that field conditions actually matter. By starting in the summer you will have the opportunity to play when the fields are in better shape. WIN FOR FOOTBALL - this is a dangerous sport when it comes to making sure the athletes are protected from too much heat. They have to wear all this equipment - shoulderpads, helments and pants - which traps the heat and increases the dangers for them. BB / SB can be better protected from the heat than FB players. Have BB / SB start the Monday after the dead period and have 3 weeks of practice and then play from early August to Mid Oct and have playoffs afterwards. You should be able to get done before the bad weather sets in. Have FB start in late Feb and give them 4 weeks of practice and play 11 weeks (open week) until late May and playoffs after - should be finished before it really gets hot. Yes there are problems with this plan and it would involve dramatically changing American culture of football Friday nights in the fall. I just thought it makes some sense.
  4. I don't think it's an issue at all - you are either committed to your team and making it and yourself better or you are selfish and don't have the team first on your list of priorities. You can't do both at the same time. That is why they put 365 days in the year to be able to do both a different times.
  5. Are you referring to my compromise? Are you talking about a specific rule or something? If we can break the state into classifications then we can have another tournament at the end. :ylsuper:
  6. How about a compromise??? Break it up to classes like football was before the split into six classes - keep it four classes. Then have a state champion for each one. Then play a Super Championship between the four winners. This way you have state champs and a super champ. Odds are the 4A and 3A schools will win the Super Championship but at least 1A and 2A have a chance at a state championship. Also play the Super Championship as a best of 3 series.
  7. I have had players quit because they couldn't go on spring break. One of my rules is you do not drink alcohol. When we get back after spring break the stories I hear of the drunkfests amaze me. It's worse because these kids are allowed to go to Florida on their own and do whatever. If they would rather do that then they can go and stay for all I care. Someone earlier said it best - you got a small time period to play baseball but the rest of your life to do whatever.
  8. Thanks Strike3. That helped me a bunch.
  9. How does an indoor league work in Lexington? I am hard pressed to think of a building big enough to have games in it or is it a drills and fundamental thing? I am so lost about this...could someone please explain it for me???
  10. What do you mean by that? The reason I ask is I am a long distance fan and not around the program that much. So I don't know much about the day to day happenings.
  11. So is Gary Justice not coming back as pitching coach? I thought he did a really good job with the pitchers - especially Huffman.
  12. How will Pikeville do this coming season and in the future? With Lawson gone they have lost a great coach but how will the new staff do? I know it's not fair to compare the two but let's face they will be. I wish them the best of luck though so I am not trying to stir up trouble. Just curious.
  13. I think one common denomenator is the type of coach who cusses. Most of the coaches who cuss frequently are the ones who just yell as a form of "correction". You know the guys who are like "you did it wrong, why in the world do we practice when you keep doing it wrong" or something along those lines and it's yelled with cuss words. Those guys aren't good coaches becasue they are not teaching. Some people forget or don't realize that a coach and teacher are the same no matter what. A good coach will say "here is what you are doing wrong, this is why you are doing wrong and here is what you can do to correct it" Usually those guys may yell but overall don't cuss or if they do cuss it is very little. The guys who think that yelling is coaching are the ones who are doing the cussing. When you look at the records I think you will find a difference in the wins and losses.
  14. I'm not really going to disagree with you Sandman on most of what you said. You are right except that I would hate to lose football because there are some good players that are Freshmen and Sophomores. Those were the kids who would have had to tackle the Hibbett kid and their other studs. I don't want to cancel football but BC does need to go back to square one. Maybe just play district games next year since it would be a better district than the one they are in now. Who knows?? Old Guy - I agree that Grant County should be applauded for showing up but let me ask you this - how many players do they have vs the number of players of the teams they compete against? I'm sorry but you are not going to learn some life lesson by showing up and getting your brains bashed in. Breck is outscored 342 - 76. The closest game was an 6 point difference with Hancock Co which is not a dominant Class A team. Breck is realistically a small Class A football team in a solid Class AAA enrollment.
  15. I agree completely and hope those things do work out eventually. I am just a little tired of getting called cowards and other things. I DO NOT AGREE WITH CANCELING THE GAME but there are reasons for why it happened and want people to understand what went on. You want another example of sad at BC - the baseball and softball teams have to raise every single penny for their program because the BOE won't build them a field on campus. They lose so much revenue from gate and concession they have no way to generate revenue. Plus the park board over the field they use try to screw them. They had an agreement worked out on how much the teams were supposed to get from concession but the park board didn't like it and changed it.
  16. Statmanhensley - it's not a question of getting blown out. Breck has been blown out all season. It's a question of kids getting seriously hurt. If Breck's kids played against Bowling Green men then someone is probably going to get hurt severely. Breck's closest game was Hancock County which is a small single A school. They were still outscored by two touchdowns. They were not "afraid" of being blown out. They were afraid of getting kids sent to the hospital like they were last year. In other sports you can play against a VERY dominant team and not get players hurt but in football if you play a very dominant team there may be some kids who are going to get hurt for the rest of their lives. Football is a dangerous sport but a great sport in that it does teach you many things about life but let's keep things in perspective here. It's still a game that is very physical and if you have one team more powerful than another kids may get seriously hurt. Bowling Green could beat some small colleges but Breck might struggle against some Freshmen teams. It's not cowardly to keep kids from being hurt when there is a precedent there - it's embarassing but it's not cowardly. Orisionspi - as for the feeder system let me just say the middle school coach will not run the same offense nor defense as the high school team. The high school coach has asked several times for them to do it and he refuses. This same guy dogged this freshmen class - said they were terrible, no athletes, couldn't play etc... and that this 8th grade class would be the best to ever leave the middle school. He asked at the start of the season if the 8th grade group could scrimmage the freshmen team. He honestly thought it would be a blowout by the 8th grade team over the freshmen team. We didn't keep score but the 8th grade group was blown out by the freshmen team. I think that shows 1) there is a some talent there and 2) the high school coaches can coach. By the way the 8th grade group (the best ever - remember?) only won 2 maybe 3 games. The home attendance is not bad. In 2000 it was great - standing room only but the 1 - 9 seasons still have good turnouts. I really don't know what the problem is.
  17. Here let me clear a few things up about this whole mess. Everyone on here is bashing Breckinridge - and I'm not going to argue against what is said. I am associated with the program and can give you an idea as to what was behind the decision. First let me say that I am NOT a coach or administrator at the school. Also, I don't agree that BC should have forfeited - it's very embarassing to do it BUT it was probably the best decision to be made. In the past two years Bowling Green has severely hurt three players in the game and not from being cheap shot artists. They were just hard hitters and our guys got hurt. In 2004 a boy from BC broke his arm and in 2005 a boy from BC broke his ankle (it was hanging from his leg) and another boy hurt his neck. The last two had to be carried off the field in ambulances. This does not even include the normal bangs and bruises which come from a normal game. Last week against Adair County BC had a very physical game with them. BC thought they had a chance to win (obviously they did not) so they played really hard. This week for practice on Monday 10 kids were not practicing because of injury. By Wednesday only two of them had come back and the starting noseguard went down with a high ankle sprain. BC would have had to play Bowling Green with many freshmen and sophomores who have very little experience on the varsity level. BG cannot start the game with their JV team or Freshmen team. They HAVE to play their starters because it is getting close to playoffs. BG needs to tune up and BC is just trying not to get people seriously hurt. You can talk about how BC needs to prepare more so the injuries won't happen - that is not always the case. BC routinely has numbers in the 30's and play against teams who have numbers in the 50's. Those teams are able to use more kids and keep kids fresh in games and practice while BC has the same 30 kids hitting each other in practice and games. That abuse takes a toll after a few weeks. At what point do you decide when to hit and not to hit? If you hit all the time your players are going to break down but if you don't hit enough then you are not ready for it when the game happens. It's not an easy balance to find when you are limited in your numbers. Kids are not interested in football at BC. There are plenty of kids walking the halls who could really help out but they choose not to play. I know firsthand all the coaches recruit the halls like crazy. They will get a kid out for a few days and they quit because 1) its too hard 2) they don't like a coach telling them they are doing something wrong 3) would rather work 4) millions of other excuses. Most kids don't even come out until school starts and they are going to scrimmage that week. I know the proper answer is don't let them come out but those are your better players. If you don't let them on there goes ANY chance of being competitive and you are going to get your brains bashed in while playing with kids who would not be water boys at places like Bowling Green. But the flip side is you are sending the wrong message to everyone "come out when you want because we let everything go". It's not an easy place to be in and there really is no answer. Does BC need to drop football? I would hope not - it would be very embarassing for a AAA school to drop football from a lack of interest, competitiveness and other things. Does BC need to drop from the district? Probably not with the one it's going into next year. With more non-district games and the caliber of district teams they are facing they are in a good position for next year. Also, they do have a nice group of young players coming up who should be competitive. Some have said the administration does not support the team and I don't agree with that. The current principal was an asst. football coach for several years and he does all he can to help the team. The board of education is a different story though. The field house that went up a few years ago was built from soccer plans. Nobody knows why they used soccer plans for a football field house but they did. The principal had to beg and plead for the BOE to spend the money to redo the field after several students took four wheel drive vehicles on it and messed it up. You think it looks bad now you should have seen it then. The head coach went to the facilities management guy and told him about the field goal posts TWO YEARS ago and they said it was fine. When it finally fell the BOE wanted the booster club to pay for the new goal posts. I don't care who you are that is just wrong. There are many problems with BC sports but it's not fair to blame basketball on everything. I don't know what the situation is a Muhlenberg North or other places but our basketball coaches do support other sports. BC is a basketball school although more kids have went to play football and baseball in college than in basketball. By no means am I defending the forfeit but there are valid reasons to why the forfeit did happen. BG will get more preperation for the playoffs with an intrasquad scrimmage than playing BC. If you are looking for someone to blame then you need to blame - the players, coaches, administration, BOE, parents, community and everyone else you can think of. One person or group does not put a program into as bad a shape like this by themselves.
