  1. My prayers go out to Steve and his family. Godspeed on their recovery.
  2. I thought your posting was very appropriate and heartfelt. All of my best to him and his loved ones for a speedy recovery.
  3. With a growing number of football players having longer hair. Can another player tackle a player by grabbing his hair? Or can he do anything common to the game of football by grabbing another player's hair? It has got to hurt.
  4. Cleveland newspaper: Mooney pounds CovCath, 57-0 http://highschoolsports.cleveland.com/game/news/171524/article/19825/ The school: Youngstown Cardinal Mooney http://www.cardinalmooney.com/
  5. Whatever happened to the players listed below? What are they doing now? The purpose of this thread is not to embarrass anyone; therefore, use common sense in responding to this thread. Beechwood: Hergott QB Newport: Eric Lanthorne RB Highlands: Burt brothers RB, Deron Blasingame QB, Rob Smith T, Steve Beagle TE, Les Murray C, Kevin Sumida RB, and Grover who played at Purdue. NCC: Frank Jacobs TE Male: Jones? the receiver who went to Tennessee. Lexington: Shelton all-world running back.
  6. The best high school teams in Kentucky for the 2007 season: 1A – Beechwood 2A – Fort Campbell 3A – Central 4A – Lexington Catholic 5A – Highlands 6A – Trinity This was determined by a tournament sanctioned by the KHSAA. Anything else is just speculation – if its and buts were presents and nuts we would all have a Merry Christmas. Congratulations to all of the champions.
  7. My sentiments exactly. Great win for the BIRDS and a hard loss for BG. Both teams should be applauded for their efforts. The game was well worth the trip. Got to see Skip Hicks and Vic Brown.
  8. I hope my memory is correct, but didn't Steve Kowolenek play in the band during halftime?
  9. Just remember there is no "I" in team and there ain't no "WE." LOL
  10. I may be wrong but it seems to me that there is a coach at a high school off of Carothers Road in Newport that year in and year out develops and directs a quality football program. He does this without a lot of fanfare but just with the sweat of his brow. I am a fan and supporter of HHS which receives a lot of accolades – deservingly so. However, the NCC program just like their mentor, Coach Bob Schneider, without all of the public accolades just gets things done. Saturday, December 8, 2007, in the 2007 Class 2A KHSAA Commonwealth Gridiron Bowl Coach Schneider and his charges will just get things done. Monday Coach Schneider will go back to NCC and continue to get things done. He has to be a treasure of the NCC athletic program, Kentucky high school football, and an inspiration to all of us who get things done or want to get things done.
  11. LMAO Try as I may I can never get one over on you. You make Friday night games with your quips.
  12. Just like Highlands you didn't put a "Womens" sign on the restroom door. Poor guys spends all of his time directing the ladies to the restroom.
  13. I think I better eject myself from the discussion in order to retain my (reasonably) good standing. - Birdsfan Whatever - LOL I guess you are becoming civilized.
  14. In my humble opinion the recruiting process begins at the third and fourth grade. The biggest asset a high school coach has is a feeder program. In my years with the FTJFL was the dedication of the coaches (high school and FTJFL), the parents, and last but not least the kids. The majority of our kids went on to Highlands and to a lesser extent NCC. But it didn’t make any difference to us all the kids were given the chance to develop their athletic skills. Most of our coaches were former Highlands’ players. The league worked closely with the coaching staff through clinics and advice to our coaches. We ran the same defense as Highlands and offensively used the same terminology. While the freshman football coach worked with us, the head coach was well aware of what we were doing and would give us advice. We played our games at the stadium with the younger kids playing in Death Valley. So on Saturday we were all at the high school. Highlands reviewed the previous night’s game at 9 AM and would come out and mingle with our athletes and fans. The coaches would come out and spend time talking to the fans and athletes. Bottom line is that everyone felt they were part of the program. And this paid dividends later when the kids had earned their “wings (members of the varsity squad).” It was amazing to some parents that the kids could be rivals on the field and after the game would hang around with each other. To me the greatest tribute came when my son made an outstanding tackle in the NCC game. One of the NCC players said “great hit” and congratulate my son. The NCC coach said “He’s your enemy don’t congratulate him.” The kid said “No he is my friend.” The best recruiting tool is a solid feeder program.
  15. XIX. To an Athlete Dying Young by A. E. Housman (1859-1936) The time you won your town the race We chaired you through the market-place; Man and boy stood cheering by, And home we brought you shoulder-high. To-day, the road all runners come, Shoulder-high we bring you home, And set you at your threshold down, Townsman of a stiller town. Smart lad, to slip betimes away From fields were glory does not stay And early though the laurel grows It withers quicker than the rose. Eyes the shady night has shut Cannot see the record cut, And silence sounds no worse than cheers After earth has stopped the ears: Now you will not swell the rout Of lads that wore their honours out, Runners whom renown outran And the name died before the man. So set, before its echoes fade, The fleet foot on the sill of shade, And hold to the low lintel up The still-defended challenge-cup. And round that early-laurelled head Will flock to gaze the strengthless dead, And find unwithered on its curls The garland briefer than a girl's. This is tragic and all my prayers go out to his family and friends.
  16. purple eagles 416 Excellent posting and analysis. You did good!!! Too bad this thread isn't entitled "The Positive Impact of the 6 Class System."
  17. 3. The cannon. I knew it would be loud, but WOW! It looked like a war scene when the cannon shot and I swear it looked as though it was firing directly at me. I definitely flinched the first time, but after so many Bluebird scores, I was comfortable by halftime! I have been going to Highlands games for many years too many to recount. I still flinch everytime the cannon goes off. It always manages to get me. I am glad you enjoyed your trip to Highlands and hopefully you can enjoy many more. Friday nights in the Fall are great with the game, friends and Dixie Chili after the game.
  18. Took a look at stats report to KHSAA 11/24/07: Highlands based on "Total Offense" Rushing 72% Passing 28% Bowling Green based on "Total Offense" Rushing 54% Passing 46% Highlands based on "Total Offense Allowed" Rushing 50% Passing 50% Bowling Green based on "Total Offense Allowed" Rushing 47% Passing 53% Will be interesting.
  19. The refs aren't poor. They get paid to be at the game. I have to pay to be there.:jump:
  20. Chill leatherneck. The statement by 72birdman I took as a tongue in cheek response to the often heard comment that Highlands has no passing game - nothing more. As to the fan I believe “freedom of speech” is still alive and well. Just remember you are going to be an “old man” too.
  21. Excellent!!! I think if you took what they make for coaching and divide it by the hours they put in no one would work for that low of a wage unless they are dedicated to helping athletes do their best. They are first and foremost teachers, and try to teach football to their charges. All they can do is teach. Friday night is a weekly test for the athletes and they are kids taking their test in front of everyone. Both deserve a lot praise and our support.
  22. I showed up at the game last night with a little trepidation. Even though I was confident in the Birds, the Colonels always seem to reach down and come up with a great game. This respect for the Colonels is in the minds of some Birds fans, if the truth be known. In my opinion it appeared that the Colonels were going to try and play a ball control game (best defense is to keep the Birds’ offense off the field) that didn’t work out. Highlands got two relatively quick touchdowns and the Colonels found themselves having to come from behind. I may be wrong but I don’t think the personality of this year’s Colonels team is coming from behind. Even with this said I kept waiting for the Colonels’ offense to come alive. It didn’t. This game has to be a tribute to the Birds’ defense for thwarting the Colonels’ offense the entire game. Congratulations to the Colonels’ players, coaches and fans for what had to be a frustrating season. They didn’t quit and made the most of the season. I am sure like the mythical “Phoenix” they will rise from the ashes and remain an outstanding program. Congratulations to the Birds’ players, coaches and fans for an outstanding season and continued success with hopefully a final winning game at the house built by pizzas.
