You should have asked that question a year ago. That's when it started.

Jackson was back on track at the Buckhorn Invitational today. They took the lead about 2 minutes into the game and never gave it up. Balanced scoring with 4 players in double figures. Leslie looked tired after 2 hard-fought games on the previous two nights at the Buckhorn Invitational. Thanks to the Buckhorn folks for a nice tournament.

Jackson's boys took the night off and Buckhorn tore them up, had a 20 pt lead at half and kept it the rest of the game. Eric Stidham went out with a bad ankle. Andy Blank couldn't miss. Jackson City's boys said they were tired and sore from their hard 2OT game with Middlesboro the night before. They certainly looked tired against Buckhorn.

Gayheart had his second straight double-double for Jackson with 11 or 12 points and 11 rebounds. The freshman Josh Hollon had 12 points, Goff had 17, Pedro Sierra had 18, and Hayes had 20 for the Tigers.

Middlesboro came out with the win after 2 overtimes. M-boro kept the lead until late in the game when JCS came back and took the lead, and then see-sawed back and forth until a couple of key turnovers and fouls let Middlesboro put it away. Exciting game from start to finish.

Good game, close to the end. Both teams showed good aggression and the ability to put rallies together. Hayes had 25 for Jackson and several steals and rebounds. Gayheart had 19 and 9 blocks for them as well.

I think the Jackson Tigers can count that one as a moral victory, regardless of the score. Jackson outplayed and outhustled Powell for 4 quarters, even with 5 players fouled out on the bench. They had the lead and the ball with 6seconds before it went into OT. Powell ended up barely winning in OT over the JV team. Dang those pesky time clock buttons. They never work when you need them to.

The slo-mo video shows they won it last year, but just didn't get the trophy. They'll win a few games this year. Jackson is never deep but they'll surprise a few teams like they do every year.

Doug reads this forum, or at least hears about it. Those of us that know and respect him agree that he needs to do the right thing and give Owsley's administration an answer.

no they pitched campbell, Jackson only had 5 hits, and they had two players with 2 each, tigers played decent defense, Lee County just played better

More rain, not looking good.

The Jackson City/Lee Co. game was stopped for rain in the first inning. Will it resume play where it left off, or will it be restarted at the beginning?

Some very good, some very bad, and most in between.

Monday at Breathitt's field, games to be played at 11:00am, 12:00, 2:00, 4:00 and 8:00 if I was told correctly. This will conflict with the 14th Softball tournament in Estill for those that want to attend both.

Davidson was a one man highlight film. You can't teach stuff like that; it's instinctive. Finally, JCS kept their errors to a minimum and capitalized on Breathitt's errors. All Jackson's runs came in the first inning when Breathitt had 3 or more straight infield errors. After that, Ritchie took over and I'm not sure JCS runners ever got as far as third base again. 8th grader Boggs kept Breathitt off balance all night with his curve. I counted 7 K's, could have been more. Breathitt has more athletes than Jackson, but I can't say they have better athletes. Jackson's boys just played up to their potential. Coach Combs motivates those boys the right way and they would run through a brick wall for him. There's a reason each of those boys hugged him when they accepted their trophies.

The Tigers fought off the Wolves in this opening round game. Hayes pitched for Jackson and Drake pitched for Wolfe, the same matchup as the game last month. Both pitched well, I thought. Hayes had a bunch of strikeouts and maybe one walk, but he gave up a lot of big hits in the 2nd inning before he got back on track. Drake didn't give up a lot of big hits but Jackson put the ball in play a lot and took care of their baserunners. The last play of the game involved the catcher Boggs gunning down a Wolfe runner at third, and the Jackson tagger and Wolfe taggee were close childhood friends. Jackson City moves on to face favored Breathitt again in the 55th championship Friday night. Last year's game was a last inning thriller with Jackson upsetting the Bobcats.

Drake started for Wolfe and Boggs started for Jackson. Both gave up a couple runs in the first innings. Gentry Hayes came in for Jackson in the 3rd and finished the game out. Wolfe's pitcher got a little tired and Jackson started spraying hits in the later innings. Corey Davidson had a couple shoestring catches in centerfield again. Breathitt and Jackson City should have the 1-2 spots in the district wrapped up now.

I wish those OF errors were the only ones.:cry: Ritchie did for sure look good but didn't seem to have to speed he used to, wasn't as intimidating as before. I hope he's not hurt.

Boggs of Jackson gave up 4 runs in the first two innings to a good hitting Breathitt team. Lawson of Breathitt yielded a Grand Slam to Jackson's Dustin Flinchum in the 3rd to tie the game at 4. Hayes of Jackson took the mound in the 3rd and held Breathitt scoreless for 4 innings until the 7th, when Jackson's defense quit and went home early. I counted 5 errors in the top of the 7th and Breathitt took full advantage of it, scoring 5 in the 7th to break the tie and win. Jackson has got to get rid of the Tee Ball errors if they are going to do anything in the post season.

This was a dandy. Hazard scored one run in each of the first three innings and then Jackson roared back with some big hits in the top of the 4th to tie it up. Hazard scored a run in the 4th to take the lead. Both teams were scoreless in the last innings. Jackson pitched Boggs, an 8th grader, who handled himself very well, getting several K's. Hazard pitched Combs in the first 5 innings. The reliever came in for him with considerably more speed. Jackson had runners on in the top of the 7th and the pitcher snow-coned a line drive and then threw to first for the double, ending the game. This was an exciting game only slightly marred by some rude comments and chants from the dugout. In my opinion, the All A format needs some improvement. Organized supposedly for the little schools, it actually penalizes those schools with small pitching rosters by playing so many games in the same week that a small school uses up all its pitchers before their 3 day rest is up. Spreading it out over a longer timeframe would allow a small team to come back with some pitching before the tournament is over.

I agree ompletely, IMO, it was just simply Jenkins ovverlooking the Tigers. It appeared that June Buchanon did the same thing, only pitching their starter 2 innings, then being forced to bring him back later when they got down. They were playing for the next game and not the one at hand

Similar to the anecdote in the book "The Umpire Strikes Back." The big league ump wrote that when Nolan Ryan's pitches approached 98-100 mph, the ball just seemed to dissolve. He never saw it after it left the hand. His optometrist told him that his eyes just couldn't refocus fast enough to follow the ball. So, the ump would just call the fast ones by the SWAG method. One pitch was called a strike, and the batter said, "Sounded low to me." He couldn't see it either.

Blowing an occasional call is human nature. But waiting that long to change your mind to blow the call is fishy.
