Thank you! I have friends at CC I hadn't seen in years, and I'll be in the 'ville supporting you. I just can't tolerate people with an agenda blasting a man I (and we) care so much about. Like I said, a coach addressing his team, especially in that emotional situation with so much on the line, should be able to console his players without this kind of nonsense. Thanks again, and beat BG worse so we can at least brag about that!!

None taken, as you can tell. Never was an issue here, although I can see why it would be offensive to other Christians. You've probably also heard many people (at least according to the papers) express an opinion on the public/private issue. Why is an opinion on that issue, by a coach or anyone, such a topic of conversation? I was in the circle of players and fans, and what Coach said is being distorted and assigned meaning which I know was not intended. Its juvenile, and disgusting, and has no business being a thread topic. Just defending my coach, as would anyone who supports and appreciates their coach.

I don't think any live in Paintsville, and if one or two do, its only because annexation expanded to them. Regardless, there are no athletes I know of who have transferred from Paintsville to Johnson Central. Too many restrictions.

I'm not really comparing the two, just saying those arrogant cheers were in public, and whatever Matney said was very private. There's no comparison. Whatever coach Matney said was a mere opinion, and was directed to a bunch of heart-broken players and a few parents. It has no business being debated, because it wasn't a public statement. But between the one "actual" cheer, and the totally unverified and supposed "comments" (opinions), I know which is much easier to defend. One more thing, coach Matney nor any church I know of would support, or even tacitly support, such a cheer.

They didn't say "God's on everyone's side". They said "God's on 'our' [Covington Catholic's] side". They could have said "everyone's", but they didn't, because that's obviously not what they were saying. No one took it personally, or expected the Catholic church to face the media, but its pretty darn offensive and arrogant, and obviously supported by you and everyone else associated with the school in Covington. It was blatantly public too, as part of a celebratory rehearsed (complete with choreography) ritual. Just a little something to chew on before you, or anyone, support a thread like this. I'm trying to defuse it, and think it should be closed. At the risk of having an opinion, its no one's business, and shouldn't have been resurrected in the first place.

The rediculous thing is you don't even know what our coach said or didn't say, yet you insist on making pure speculation almost factual, as evidenced by you highlighting a lie. Its none of your business what our coach says to his players, just like its none of our business what your coach, or you for that matter, say to your's. No matter what a coach says (and he certainly didn't say what you highlighted) to players and parents, he certainly has no obligation to talk to the media and apologize to anyone, and certainly not you, for expressing an opinion. What he said was personal, and intended to stay that way. He wasn't conducting a press conference. He was talking to his players and leading the team prayer as he has done for three years at JC. Speaking of prayer, don't you think your student body should apologize for chanting "God's on our side", in public (not private) during the game?

Are you sure? I haven't heard anything about an indoor facility.

They certainly have one, but we didn't see it much through the season. I'm speculating, but I suppose all the blowouts were the main reason. Speculating further, since JC was moving the ball on the ground most of the night, and didn't take the lead until the second half, I suppose the coaches felt JC could continue sustaining drives on the ground and keep it close. In about a 10 minute span, everything fell apart. Blake Johnson was injured early in the 3rd, and he was carrying tacklers all night. Down 17-14 in CC territory, a fumble. Burned on a long pass play for a TD. One of the few passes batted down at the line. And number 20 for CC was also a difference-maker, after not playing much (or not being a factor) until the second half--he beat the JC defenders on the slant almost at will. Everything happened so quickly. But I agree, we probably shouldn't have continued to keep it on the ground, eating up clock, in the 4th quarter.

Congrats again to Covington Catholic. It was great meeting old friends of the family and hearing all the stories. We'll be in Louisville pulling for you.

The first half was basically even, with a slight edge to JC on the scoreboard. Cath should have taken the lead on the final play of the half, but for a dropped pass in the endzone. Covcath owned the second half, and while the injury to Johnson and refusal to go to the air appeared to hurt JC, the better team won.

Total yardage was about even. CC had a balanced attack, and that was the big difference. Central can throw the ball too, but for whatever reason, chose not to.

Man, that is impressive. We watched that first CovCath/Team from Fort Thomas in the hotel after mud-wrestling Mason County the night before. It looked like 2 college teams out there.

We're the Ohio teams quicker than CC? I was also surprised to see that Beechwood and Newport Cath's defenses were so much more effective than Lexington Cath's.

You do realize that Russel and Belfry are both 2A teams right? You've got to be kidding me if you think they are the best. Not taking anything from those two teams, but Ashland is a 3A team, and when you can barely beat a 2A team, I dont consider you one of the elite in 3A then. Not to mention that Raceland beat them, and they are 1A if I am thinking straight... How many non-district games does Ashland have that are against teams in 2A or under? Thats three right there, and they play P-burg Friday, so that makes 4.

If you even start to mention Bell, then you must mention Johnson Central also. The Varsity has had two defensive shutouts that were later spoiled by the JV. Not to mention they are one of the few teams still standing undefeated. They don't have the toughest schedule in the state, but definately dont have the weakest, playing South Point OH and Bryan Station

I believe Ousley and Chase are both looking at another week or two. JK on the other hand, may be out anywhere from 3 to 6. But like I said, the Eagles have enough talent to keep on rollin' over the competition, if they can stay away from the distractions and local talk.

Any night is a good night for football IMO. JC has a few key players missing in Ousley, Ratliff, and Richardson, but definately has the depth to make up for it. Mason Meek was really impressive last week, as was the entire defense in such a difficult time. We should see that same intensity, and maybe some more this Friday night.

And they won't win any spelling bees either. Bottom line, Ashland has, against the odds, become a good, confident football team, and they deserve this crazy celebration (it being a holiday, and all). Give the Devil his due (sorry Russell, no pun intended, and we still dominate the academic team stuff)!!

Don't get her panties in a wad, 'cause she'll come out smokin' and blow your doors of in the quarter mile. You may want the old lady to have your back one day. They're all (rightfully so) a little giddy about those two straight OT shockers...well, at least stunners). BTW, if Boyd County or even Wurtland are lookin' for a coach, I hear Rich Brooks is lookin' for a team.

Two games, hopefully, for us both. It'll be a nice rivalry for years to come.

BTW, thanks for the info on South Point/Wheelersburg, and your impression of Johnson Central to date. Believe me, those kids deserve respect, and your comments were nice.
