  1. And they won't win any spelling bees either. Bottom line, Ashland has, against the odds, become a good, confident football team, and they deserve this crazy celebration (it being a holiday, and all). Give the Devil his due (sorry Russell, no pun intended, and we still dominate the academic team stuff)!!
  2. Don't get her panties in a wad, 'cause she'll come out smokin' and blow your doors of in the quarter mile. You may want the old lady to have your back one day. They're all (rightfully so) a little giddy about those two straight OT shockers...well, at least stunners). BTW, if Boyd County or even Wurtland are lookin' for a coach, I hear Rich Brooks is lookin' for a team.
  3. Two games, hopefully, for us both. It'll be a nice rivalry for years to come.
  4. BTW, thanks for the info on South Point/Wheelersburg, and your impression of Johnson Central to date. Believe me, those kids deserve respect, and your comments were nice.
  5. A rare typo, so I suspect you have "dearly departed" and an unworthy heir is trying to keep the draw coming in. I picked you Mo's though, and am proud the way you came back. Dickie was cracklin' in and out as I sat in the old Ford (best radios), secretly pullin' for you BGP hogs and sendin' updates to Leonard Post-Toasties in Heaven. Frances, tell 'em I picked GIAT's object of worship the last two weeks. I got struck by lightnin' a split (I mean milliseconds) after "wide right" at Putman last year, which ever so briefly diverted the officials' attention, and these fingers just inexplicably type agonizing prognostications. Lord Tomcat, help me please. Carl (my cat) stretched out on a little rug 5 times today, praying (as it were) toward Ashland, so now I got me a cat to kill. If he keeps this up, I'm gonna put a purple jersey on him and FedEx him to Naomi Judd. Seriously (???), I feel your pride and rejuvination, and can't wait for our rivalry to mature into "The Game". Now that you're back on your feet, where you should be, all is right in District 8! Good luck!
  6. Long road ahead, but if the offense ever catches up with the defense, no question that Pikeville should advance deep into the playoffs.
  7. Good for them. I know they're senior-dominated, and they played very hard at Central. IMO, South Point was by far the best team we've faced this year, and had Central played 1/2 a game against them like they did against Logan last night (with the exception of our usual defensive headhunters, i.e., Dials, Gordouze, Tackett, Johnson, Conley, Dillon, etc.), South Point might have won. Those guys make the secondary's job much easier.
  8. Bryan Station is used to playing quality teams every week. Great athletes, new coach, and I would expect them to be one of the best teams we'll see this year. Not sure what it'll say about November, but there's no question that they're a good football team and a quality opponent that can beat us. Looks like we'll be seeing them for the next few years under the new alignment.
  9. We're No. 2 on YMT (for what that's worth). Rock is still No. 1, even though they edged Corbin 2-0, and South Laurel, which hadn't shown much until tonight, beat Corbin 21-20. That ranking is just fine, as far as I'm concerned, because we have alot of work to do from what I saw tonight.
  10. Don't quote me, but I don't think Ousley played. Logan played very inspired in the first half, and Central had difficulty sustaining on offense. The second half was a different story. Could've probably scored another TD or two in the fourth Q, but Matney started subbing. Logan had a hard time scoring against the backups, and played their starting O-line (or at least a bunch of guys with very muddy jerseys) the entire game. There has only been 1 TD against the starting D all year, an improbable pass by the South Point man-child QB after scrambling out of 3 or 4 tackles, but I'm glad Matney lets as many kids play as possible and doesn't worry about the stats.
  11. I don't think that's what he meant, but its very unfortunate because JK has already payed his dues and this was his team to direct. He'll be back in time though.
  12. They do, and unlike Music's situation (which was a very severe break), Coach Matney has two nice QBs to step in immediately. JK Ratliff was the backup to Sean Music in Matney's first year, but after he tore his ACL, and with the numbers not like they are today (72 players), I think Coach gambled that because Sean was so tough, we wouldn't need a backup QB. If you recall, we upset Clark County the night Music broke his arm, and needed only to beat North Laurel the following week to secure a 4A playoff spot. One week just wasn't enough time to work in a brand new, inexperienced QB, and I know we tried Caudill, Grim, and even Conley that night, but nothing worked against a team we were supposed to beat. Had we played NL two weeks later, things would have been different. We're fairly deep at QB now, and I bet one reason is that Coach never forgot that unfortunate and unlikely 2004 experience when he started the season with 2 very good QBs and ended by working in other position players.
  13. Well, Pikeville hung with Henry Clay too. South Laurel beat Corbin. North beat Leslie. Johnson Central struggled for awhile with Logan, WV. Belfry didn't exactly destroy a young Lawrence County team... I don't know if there is a best team in the mountains.
  14. JK has been through a much tougher injury than this, so if there's a positive, it came early in the season. I heard two different Docs say expect six weeks. Kids can come back in four or five, but hopefully JC has the luxury of letting him heal and get back in rythem. Tonight, the defense played its usual good game. Logan's defense played very well in the first half also, which surprised everyone. Offensively though, Logan had 1 first down (their first play of the game) until their scoring drive late in the fourth quarter. I think they finished with 4 first downs, and maybe 20 yards total offense. The offense played about as poorly as I've seen in the first half, in the Matney era. The second half, they ran all over Logan in the 3rd quarter, and early in the 4th before the JV took over.
  15. Me either. The offense is another matter though
  16. Can't argue with that. Anyway, nice start SC, and impressive lopsided wins over two traditional cupcakes...
  17. I agree. If the right Shelby Valley team shows up, they have the potential to crash a party or two.
  18. I have no idea if it'll be different than last year, but it appears that the teams are more evenly matched this year, and I have a feeling that SC learned alot last year...mainly that there are 2 more quarters after halftime. I simply made a nuetral comment based upon the way the season has gone so far, and while I'm aware that Belfry traditionally comes on down the stretch, I think SC is probably at least equal in talent and could very well be playing better at this stage of the season. In short, this Belfry team is not as good as the last 3 or 4, and SC appears to be coming on. I'm not saying SC is better than Russell, and certainly not Mercer, but I believe they can hang in there with Belfry.
  19. Its an expression. It means the district is up for grabs (or looks that way). I don't think anyone literally goes out and picks a ripe piece of fruit or anything.
  20. Well, that explains how they stopped the run. Sounds like the corners were the safeties, or either the outside LBs were supposed to recognize and pull double duty. Regardless, sounds like Boyd either dared the Cards to pass, or had no respect for their passing game. Impressive win, and this district looks ripe for the pickin'.
  21. Too bad, because those big stations could do better and are missing a great opportunity. Little ole' WYMT does a fantastic job, and probably has the best Friday (and when UK's playing, Saturday) Sports Overtime show. I believe the station is primarily owned by a Lexington station, but they really put alot of effort into area sports.
