  1. Arent you the one who predicted it would happen in the district tourney as well! I think SL had a pretty "off shooting night" the second timed they played Corbin this year, at Corbin, yet they won by 17. It will take more then a "off" night by SL for any 13th region team to beat them. It will take the combination of SL being off, and the opposing team playing their best ON game ever!!! Far from Nastrodamus you are!
  2. What is that supposed to mean??? I havent even mentioned Wright in this thread. I am not the only person who thinks SL is the clear cut favorite to win this region, with every other team having little to no chance of beating them. As far as Coach Wright goes, I have the utmost respect for the man. He is as great a person as he is a coach. He is a Christian man who practices what he preaches. I recognize talent when I see it, and Coach Wright is the best coach in the region, hands down. To do what he has done with a "bunch of non athletic East KY boys" is pretty impressive.
  3. Either Coach Strange from Pineville, Steve Wright of SL, or Coach Whitaker of Bell Co. Coach Strange has done what no one has been able to do in a long long time, and that is get P'ville to a 20 win season. Irregardless of the easy schedule, he still did a heck of a job. Sure, Coach Wright has all the talent in the world, and a bum off the street could probably coach SL, and with the talent they have they would still win ball games. But SL is undefeated in the region, and will probably remain so. Not to mention SL has had a bull's eye on their chest all year, and yet Wright has managed to keep the team on track despite some rough waters at times. If SL wins the region then I dont see how Wright doesnt get it. He is undoubtedly the best coach in the region. I think Bell Co's Whitaker deserves mentioning too. He has had to coach through several key injuries, a mass exodus of several big players due to football, and a load of inexperienced youth. Yet Bell Co. has went from regional nobody to regional hopeful. They are a top 3 team at this point, and if Bell Co. doesnt fizzle in the tourney, then Whitaker may deserve the award.
  4. I'd have to say there are no dark horses in this region, simply because there is so much parity among 2-8, not to mention its a long shot for anyone to beat SL. If there was a dark horse (and it would be a dark horse to make it to the finals, not to win it) then it'd be Cawood. Lynn Camp has no chance IMO and Bell Co. really isnt a dark horse considering the streak they have been on as of late. Corbin, Clay, and NL are all going to be in the thick. Barbourville has had the hype all season. If any team could be clarified as a dark horse I'd say Cawood.
  5. I think Bell has to be ahead of Clay. I think that Corbin and North Laurel should be included in the top 10. The top 4 teams are the 13th region district champs though, which is pretty impressive.
  6. 49th District Champ: Clay Co. Runner up: North Laurel Score: 68-65 at Clay 50th District Champ:South Laurel Runner Up: Corbin Score: 78-64 at Corbin 51st District Champ: Barbourville Runner Up: Lynn Camp Score: 75-46 at Pineville 52nd District Champ: Bell Co. Runner Up: Cawood Score: 48-43 at Cawood Ranking the regional tourney teams at this point I'd say: 1.) SL 2.) Bell 3.) Clay 4.) North 5.) Corbin 6.) Barbourville 7.) Cawood 8.) Lynn Camp 2-7 can be rearranged in any order whatsoever!!! SL is the clear favorite. Lynn Camp is the only team with no chance IMO. It's a toss up with the rest of the teams, although Clay has an advantage playing at home and Bell has been playing extremely well as of late. It's going to be an interesting tournament. Anyone know how the drawing has shaken out, or has it not happened yet??? Couldnt find it on the KHSAA website.
  7. In 2001 the Bell County Bobcats traveled to Lawrence Co. to play the Lawrence Co. Bulldogs in the regional semifinals. Bell entered the game as a decisive underdog. The game was'nt even supposed to be close. Many fans were predicting LC to beat Bell by 40 or more. LC was undefeated at that time, the favorite to win the region, a lock to the state finals, and alot of talk was circulating that that team could be the team to end Boyle Co.'s streak. That LC team was a senior dominated team with lots of experiece and a ton of talent. It featured speedy QB Dontae Wright (Miami of Ohio signee), the leading rusher in the state in RB Michael West (Marshall signee), and 6'8 285 lb. MLB Jarrod Hostetter (University of Tennessee signee). Bell County was a young team, with little playoff experience. They had finished 6-4 the year before, losing in the first round of the playoff's. They had graduated a load of senior starters and leaders the year before. They were a team looking to make a mark and re-establish Bell County's dominance in mountain football, as well as discover an identity under new Head Coach Dudley Hilton. Lawrence County's stadium stands were packed with Bulldog fans, so much so that the field was surrounded by fans, 2 and 3 deep in some places. LC took the field running out of their "Dog Pound" Dog House with billowing smoke and "Who Let the Dogs Out" blasting over the PA. BC could barley run onto the field for the LC fans. I distinctly remembering one fan telling our players that they had made a long 4 hour trip for nothing. However, despite the fact the Bobcats were outmatched, they would not be outplayed. BC upset LC by a score of 8-0 in a defensive war. Dallas Greer scored on a qb sneak in the final minute of play, and RB Luke Akers topped the TD off with a 2-point conversion run. LC got the ball back with several seconds remaining, but could do nothing. Wright completed one pass, was sacked by DE Justin Barton on the next play, and then Luke Akers picked off Wright as he flung a desperation hail marry pass in the finals seconds. BC kneeled out the clock. The entire game was a war. Neither team could get much going offensively, and the defenses were playing extremely hard. It was one of the most physical and hard fought games I have ever been apart of. Afterward's I compared it to a title fight with both fighters just slugging it out, both drained and on their last legs, but neither wanting to fall. Giving and taking punches and stumbling and surviving. West needed something like 115 yards to break the state record for most rushing yards in a season, or career (not sure which one). BC's defense held West to 18 yards. That final drive you could just tell Bell was in better shape and wanted the game more. BC converted several big time 3rd downs, one in particular where it was 3rd and 3 and Akers got the ball, was hit in the backfield, fought off the defender, stumbled forward, then ran over Hostetter for the first by an inch. FB Kevin Napier also made some huge plays on that final drive, both blocking and rushing. I later compared the final, game winning drive of Bell as if their offense was a tank, slowly trucking down the field. It was 3 yards and a cloud of dust the entire drive. I don't think Bell Co. had more then maybe 5 yards on any run, and it really wore out the Bulldogs. That was the biggest upset I have witnessed, or ever been a part of. It was pretty special, and you could feel the magic. A complete team effort, in every since of the term. It's games like that, that are the reason you play or coach in HS IMO.
  8. WOW. Nice win by SL. I have said all year that when SL is hitting the 3 ball no one in this region, and arguably the state, can beat them. They got the 3 point shots to fall and they dominated. Looks like SL proves they are still the team to beat in the 13th, and if they continue to play and shoot like this throughout the postseason you can go ahead and write them a ticket to the sweet 16.
  9. Looks like SL is rolling to a District Championship!!! So much for Corbin making it a game.
  10. I'm going with SL in a score similar to the 2nd game of the season between these 2. However, I think SL wins much more convincingly, not score wise, but by the way that they play and control the game. The game is at Corbin, and Corbin will keep it close early. But SL will pull away in the 2nd 1/2, and control the game from then on out.
  11. Let's get this one started!!! :jump: Set the stage: SL is 2-0 against Corbin this season. The Cards manhandled the Redhounds earlier in the year with a 72-37 thumping at SL. SL was also victorious against the Hounds at Corbin, posting a 58-41 win just a little over a month ago. That game was more of a battle then the score indicated. SL and Corbin both dominated in their first round games, with Corbin thumping Whitley Co. 67-40, and SL absolutely demolishing an inexperienced W'burg squad 114-46. SL has been up and down all season, but seems to be back on track. They are undoubtedly the best team in the district, region, and arguably the state, when they play as a team, and dont get arrogant or selfish. Corbin is the defending district champions and feel like they have something to prove after 2 tough losses, one of which they feel like they very easily could have won. They have been playing fairly well as of late, but a little inconsistent at times. That brings us to this game. It should be a dandy. :ylsuper: Who wins this one??? Is it a battle, or does SL roll? :fight: The game is this Thursday night, March 2nd, at Corbin  . Tip off is set for 7:30 pm.
  12. Wowzers at the score!!! Sorta expected this though. I totally agree with the above statement. I said all year that P'ville was greatly improved, but fairly overrated.
  13. Same ole story. Miller will score 30+, but Bell will win convincingly IMO. I think Goins is out, but I could be wrong.
  14. UK has already hosted 1 junior day. It was invite only and they invited roughly 30 kids. Once spring practice starts I am pretty sure they will host another one. Almost every school hosts 2 or 3 junior days. 1 is usually for the schools top 10 or so junior recruits, 1 is usually invite only, and 1 is usually like an open-house for any junior players interested in that school.
  15. I would think that Wright's decision to not pull the starters until the 3rd quarter, and to press almost the entire game, would have more to do with Wright trying to get his players prepared for the tougher district and region games, later on in the post-season, then it would have to do with teaching W'burg some lesson. Lots of coaches nowadays are all about resting players for the big games and letting them take meaningless games off, but we saw where that got the Indianapolis Colts this season and last. I think Wright is trying to send a message to his players that no game can be taken lightly and they better be ready to play more then a 1/2 of ball. He doesnt want this "we are IT" attitude that has permeated the team throughout the season continuing into the district and region tourneys. It does SL no good to have there starters play a quarter or 1/2 of ball. Let alone to play that 1 quarter or 1/2 not giving it 110%. This is the district tourney, and taking the night off (whether that means resting your starters or telling them to "take it easy") isnt in SL's best interest, irregardless of how young or inexperienced W'burg is.
  16. Junior day is a type of unofficial visit. It is usually (but not always) invite only and usually includes anywhere from 10-30 kids. These kids are all the juniors (senior-to-be) that a specific college will be recruiting heavily for that year. They usually have a meal, attend a basketball game (or some other athletic event), get a short tour of the campus and football facilites, and are given the oppurtunity to meet the coaches face-to-face. Some junior days are reserved for the top 10 or so junior recruits for that season, some are open to all juniors that school will be recruiting, some are open for any junior that is interested in that school.
  17. Bell Co posted a similar score against Knox last week. Knox isnt very good. NL is on a row at this point, and looks to be playing well heading into district and region play.
  18. This one was bitter-sweet, but about what I expected. When SL plays as a TEAM (meaning they dont get selfish), and they don't come out arrogant or laxidasical (sp), then they are the undisputed best team in this region. Good effort Cats....... get ready for the district!
  19. If they do meet up I could very easily be eating my words. Either way it will be a great game. I think with P'ville on the up and up, and Bell playing well, it would be great for the rivalry.
