Anyone know if Simon Kenton v. Conner OR Scott v. Beechwood got played yesterday?

EHS -- DW said "arguably" the best team. Your comment that it is a "3 horse race" is actually confirmation of that statement. At least we have a tourney to figure it out.

Good job by the Dirty Birds taking care of business in District. They jumped out early, added on, survived a shaky 3rd inning and then finished strong. 2 strong innings on the mound by SO Jones, followed by the shaky 3rd by SO Martin. However, he bounced back strong in the 4th and 5th to close things out. SR Molina started the game with a HR (at least that is what I heard, got there later in the T1) and SRs Schultz and Murray hit the ball hard. Dirty Birds will face the winner of the 4 v. 5 game (likely Newport v. Dayton based on the results I have seen) and the 2 v. 3 game (presumably NewCath v. Bellevue) will be played on the opposite side. Winners face each other for the District title and both go to the 9th Region tourney.

Assume the Breds are preparing the rotation for the All A Classic in Lexington this weekend. Best of luck to both teams today.

Final from Alexandria. Birds got out early (4 singles and a walk to score 3) and hang on for the W. SR Murray & SR Schultz each with RBI singles in multiple innings. JR Allen scores 3 runs for the Birds. ------------------- 7 IP from JR Cochran Brossart threw Kramer, Geiman & C. Verst

Great setting with a great crowd, including a great student section from HHS, and a well pitched game by both squads. Cain got the Breds on the board in the 1st with a bomb for a 2-0 lead. (D. Pangallo got on via HBP.) Birds answered with 2 in the B2 with back to back doubles by SO Whitford and SO Ramey. That followed with Ramey swiping 3B and an overthrow to score him. NewCath scored for what would be the final time T3 via back-to-back singles by D. Pangallo and Cain and a sac fly by Hoffstedder. B3, SR Murray singled advanced to 2B and was thrown out at home on a single by SO Ramey. JR Cochran replaced SO Jones T5 with no outs and runners on 1st & 2nd and worked out of it with no damage. Birds knotted it up B5 via single by SR Schultz, double by SR Murrray and a sac fly from SO Whitford. T7, Birds get out of a jam with runners on 1st & 2nd and 2 outs on a diving stop by SO Whitford at SS who then tagged 2nd for the final out. SR Schultz led off B7 with a double, but was stranded. (Birds left 18 runners on base over 13 innings.) T9 Breds load the bases with no outs. Ground outs 2nd to home and SS to home were followed by a nice catch on a line drive by SR Molina to wiggle off the hook. T10 Birds cut down a runner trying to score from 2nd on a single with 2 outs. (I couldn't see the throw from where I was, but SR Heck has a gun in RF and that is where the ball was hit.) B11 Birds leave the bags loaded with 2 outs. T13 Breds have runner on 3rd w/ 1 out and a drawn in infield. Suicide squeeze bunt is popped up. SR Murray © catches and throws to SO Whitford (SS) to tag out the runner on 3rd for the final out. B13 Birds load the bases via hit, batter called out for being out of the box when laying down a sac bunt, error on a hit & run and a walk. On a 2-1 count, SR Murray gets down the suicide squeeze and the Birds win. SO Jones, JR Cochran and SO Martin pitch well for Birds. Bartels and Bueter pitch well for the Breds.

Any word / predictions as to starting pitchers, particularly based on who pitched this weekend?

In the Doc Morris at Highland Park on SAT. I missed this one due to prom to dawn preparations. Many of the JR and SR players missed as well. Not sure if Campbell Co. was in the same position or not. Understand SO Jones started for HHS and pitched well. Birds led 5-2 after 5 innings. SO Venneman had a 3 RBI, bases clearing 2B to help build that lead. Anyone with more details, please provide them. Birds have a tough week upcoming: MON - district seeding game at Dayton WED - Cincy St. X at Highland Park THU - huge district seeding game v. NCC at HP SAT - Boone Co. / Anderson, OH DH at Boone Co.

Really nice crowd for a JV game, but that is expected with these 2 teams. Good to see a bunch of varsity guys there to support their JV brethren. A key play in the T7 was NCC getting a runner thrown out at home for the 2nd out during their rally. I understand aggressive baserunning, but you cannot allow that to happen. Instead of, I think, 1st & 3rd w/ 1 out down 9-4, they ended up R1 w/ 2 out down 9-4.

SAT final. Birds got out early and piled on. SO Ball pitched effectively again. Any details, please provide.

It is a little unclear, but I have heard the last win was in 2001.

1st and 6th innings were the keys here. Birds needed to get more than 1 off Kuebbing. SR Molina walked on 4 pitches. SR Seidl beat out a sac bunt for a single. After a fly out to RF, SR Schultz coaxed another walk to load the bases with 1 out. SR Murray crushed a drive to left CF but it held up and was only a sac fly. A ground out ended the inning. Chance missed. St. Henry hit the ball hard B1 and pushed across 2 runs. Walk (Youngwirth), 2B (Kuebbing) & 1B (LaCorte) plated 2. SO Martin settled in after that and worked effectively. He was helped B3 by a nice throw from RF SR Seidl to cut down Youngwirth trying to tag and score from 3B. B5, St. Henry plated 1 on a walk (Conradi), HBP (Baumann) (8 & 9 in the order) and then a single by Youngwirth. JR Allen started T6 with a double to right CF. After a K, SR Murray singled Allen in and advanced around to 3B on a throwing error. SO Whitford brought him in with a single to tie the game. B6, Rogers doubled, advanced to 3B on a balk (pitcher's cleats caught in mound), Rose reached 1B on an error by the 3B that kept Rogers at 3B, 1st & 3rd w/ no outs. Pickoff attempt by C after a 3rd strike goes into LF, scoring Rogers and moving Rose to 3B. Baumann (9th batter) is walked. After a K to get the 2nd out, Kuebbing is intentionally walked to load the bases. (Pick your poison at that point. Putting Kuebbing on doesn't change the game much as he is the 7th run in B6 and allows a force at each base.) Big AB is the double to the wall by LaCorte that clears the bases with 2 outs.

Well played game by both teams. SO Jones is clearly 1 of the Birds' top performers on the bump. Not sure where the CCH pitcher stacks up in their rotation, but I'm sure someone will let us know. GAME RECAP Both teams got 2 runs in the 1st. With 1 out, Pope singled and the courtesy runner moved to 2nd on a WP. Schreiver was hit in the foot to put R1 and R2. Kunkel grounded to SS. Could have been 2 if fielded cleanly, but got the sure out at 1B. Bailey hit a solid single to bring in both runs. Looked like there might have been a play at the plate, but the cutoff was not handled cleanly. SR Molina and JR Gesenhues singled to lead off the bottom of the 1st. Gesenhues stole 2B and the throw went into CF allowing Molina to score. After 2 outs failed to advance R2, SR Murray singled to bring him home. In the bottom on the 2nd, classic "small ball" by HHS to plate a run. SO Martin was HBP, went to 2B on a PB, was sacrificed to 3B by SR Lester on a bunt and came home on a perfectly executed suicide squeeze by SR Heck. In the bottom of the 4th, Birds squandered a chance to open things up. Lead off 2B by SO Whitford and he moved to 3B on a single in a GREAT, 9 pitch at bat by SO Martin. 1st & 3rd w/ 0 out. Suicide squeeze was not executed and SO Whitford was hung out to dry. Pop out and ground out end the inning. Scoring was capped in the 5th by 1 out single by JR Gesenhues (great day). He was replaced by JR Allen on a FC. Allen stole 2B and was brought home on a gutsy, 2 out, 2 strike single by SR Schultz. T6 w/ 2 outs, Schreiver drove the ball to CF, but it was higher than it was long and eventually landed in Molina's glove. Didn't miss it by much. T7, Kunkel led off and reached base on an error (tough chance). After a fly out, Heppler grounded into a tailor made 6-3 twin killing to end the game. Colonels had some problems on the base paths today. At least 3 runners picked off. Birds were solid on defense for most of the day. SO Jones was tremendous. Pitching ahead is a great advantage. It keeps hitters defensive and allows you to pick and choose your spots. Birds play Lloyd at Highland Park on TUE. Finally, kudos to the coaches and parent volunteers for having the field in great shape to play today. I drove past Crosley Field in Blue Ash last night around 6:00 PM and there was standing water on the field. Not sure if they had no games scheduled (if so, what a waste of a great complex) or if they simply didn't work them to get them playable (also, a shame).

As far as rotation, JR Cochran, JR Vermeil and SO Martin pitched MON - WED this week. SO Jones pitched final game in Myrtle Beach last FRI, so it may be his turn on the bump. Look forward to it. Should be a good game.

Great outing for Vermeil. 6 IP. Pitched to contact well and the Birds played mostly solid defense behind him. Liggett gets out of trouble in the 7th (partly not of his making due to an E) on a line drive double play 2B to SS to end the game with runners on 2B & 3B. Offense was just good enough to get the W. BTW -- V, JV & Frosh: 21 innings, 0 runs allowed yesterday. #pitching&defense

Interesting fact for this talented JV crew -- not a single JR played for them this week while the Varsity Birds were in Myrtle Beach. You may have an occasional JR drop down to JV to get a few ABs or pitch a couple of innings based on playing time at the Varsity level, but this is primarily a FR and SO group (and maybe a single 8th grader?). Good things expected out of this group soon and for a long time to come. Keep doing it.

JV Birds are en fuego. Happy to see it for Reynolds. He does a great job with the kids from both a social and fundamentals standpoint. Importantly, he makes it fun to play baseball and that is critical to recruitment and retention of talented players. I know there are Frosh who are looking forward to their JV time and JV players who want to make it to Varsity, but will miss Reynolds when they move up.
