  1. My first reaction when I saw Shield's first swing... "Oh wow... If that would have connected he'd have been in a coma."
  2. It would also be assuming they get him into the system fast. Can this guy come in and hit .290 and play solid defense with only a few months in the minors?
  3. If you can't hit and can't play defense it doesn't matter how good your pitching is...
  4. This isn't the NFL, you don't draft for need, you draft the BPA. If they had him there I don't have a problem with it.
  5. I keep seeing Arroyo's name being thrown around as a possible deadline pickup for contending teams...
  6. I don't know why anyone would think that Glory Road was bad...
  7. It does make sense. From what I've heard, T. Beckham has the highest ceiling in this years draft. Maybe only contested by Alvarez, and he has the advantage over Alvarez because he didn't hire Boras...
  8. Is that a guess or insider info?
  9. I understand what you are saying about text, but when I text, which is often, I do it usually to multitask. I can text and type, text and read, text and run, text and watch tv, etc. Or sometimes I use text to have conversations that last over a period of time, instead of making multiple calls or one long call, I prefer simply texting twice in maybe an couple hour period. It has also helped in particularly large crowds with loud enviroments (concerts, sporting events, festivals, etc.)
  10. I agree with the bolded very much. I think a lot of our bullpen has been underrated thus far this season. A lot of people don't realize that Bill Bray was picked just 6 picks after Homer Bailey. His ERA is down to 2.76. Burton has lowered his under 3 also at 2.93. Herrera and Majewski both looked good in their appearances this year, and Affeldt has had some problems lately but has good stuff. Cordero down there to slam the door is always a plus. Lincoln hasn't been good lately, but I'm not completely uncomfortable with him on the mound in tight situations. Our bullpen is underrated IMO...
  11. My bad, I didn't realize that it is common knowledge to know the requirements for rookie of the year. Maybe I should study up next time. Look back to my original post and it says "but can Volquez with his appearances prior to this year?" That indicates a question, which is why I rolled eyes at the Utley remark. Maybe it wasn't my mistake but your failure to read my entire post.
  12. First of all, I didn't post any of Bruce's stats... We could be revisiting them later in the season with the way that he has started. Secondly, every category I posted Soto leads, but not by much. I acknowledged the fact that at this point he should lead, but the serious catching up that he needs to do is more in the W/L column than the stats, as long as the Cubs are atop the division, Soto had more credibility. But those stats are so close that one or two good/bad nights could flip flop the two in the stats. And on the other stats you threw out, well, Votto has played in 56 of 60 games for the Reds. He's 4th in doubles, 3rd in HR, 3rd in RBI. He also has the second highest BA for any everyday player for the club. I don't know why Soto should be given "points" for the city he plays in. The biggest reason he is ahead right now, like I said, is because his team is winning. I don't wear any homer glasses... Recognize that the stats you threw out were closer than you make it seem.
  13. :irked: Completely different situation. I thought that Volquez may have fell into the rookie category because he hadn't spent anywhere near a full year in the majors unlike Utley or anyone else. I didn't know the requirements or the amount of time Volquez had been in the majors. As you can see, I now looked that up.
  14. Additional eligibility requirements were set forth in 1971 with a rookie formally defined as a player with less than 130 at-bats, a pitcher with less than 50 innings pitched, or anyone with less than 45 days on any Major League roster. The above indicates that Volquez wouln't be eligible, because he had around 70 innings pitched and had 6 and 8 starts the past two seasons for Texas indicating that he had surpassed the 45 day mark...
  15. Why? Soto: .293 10 HR 39 RBI .394 OBP .560 SLG Votto .287 10 HR 31 RBI .361 OBP .519 SLG Bruce hasn't had enough stats to warrant consideration yet. Maybe Soto is in the lead right now, but I wouldn't say Votto has "serious catching up to do." Their numbers are very similar. And if Volquez is eligible I think there would be no doubt that he would be the leader for the award at this point.
  16. A couple questions that I have thought about recently... At this point in the season, who from the Reds is an All Star? Volquez is the one the consensus, but anyone else? Phillips isn't swinging the bat well enough and 2B in the NL is tough. What about Cordero though? He is in the top 5 in saves and has an ERA just above 2. At this point Lidge and Wagner both have sub 1 ERA's so they would be there, but don't count him out. And... Will we see Daryl Thompson this season? He has had a pretty quick rise through the minors but in AA his ERA was just above 1 and in AAA it hasn't even gotten that high. It would be interesting to see him in the rotation with Volquez and Cueto. It may depend on how tomorrows start goes. Who knows, maybe both of em stick and we have a rotation of guys 24 and younger with nasty stuff to go with Harang. Hmm... And who from the Reds could be named Rookie of the Year? I assume Bruce can, but can Volquez with his appearances prior to this year? What about Votto? Any contenders from other teams?
  17. That number one pick could shake things up a lot. I think the top candidates are Tim Beckham, Buster Posey, or Pedro Alvarez, but don't count out the likes of Brian Matusz or even Gordon Beckham. It seems pretty consensus that Matusz and Crow are the best pitchers in the draft.
  18. Starts Sunday. Apparently St. Henry will be attending. What other teams are headed to Transy?
  19. Right now, for me, it is fairly easy to say Volquez, because it is much harder to find a pitcher that pitches the way he has to this point. Outfielders are much easier to find than good starting pitching. And at this point, the health factor looks to be much more of a risk with Hamilton because of what his body has been through in the past. I guess what I am saying is, if they are both healthy, I take Volquez.
  20. For awhile, and maybe the still do, they kicked people out of movie theatres if an employee was in the theater(usually big new releases) and saw you texting. I, personally, don't understand this, because me texting isn't ruining your movie experience. The consistant funeral texting thing isn't acceptable.
  21. Why would you trade the 2nd pick for the first. Neither Rose or Beasley stand out over the other and being the 2nd pick makes it easy for you...
  22. Maybe, but who would have said that DWade would be the first with a ring when his draft class came out? I don't think Wade was as highly touted as Rose and Beasley are when he came out.
