3a fan rankings for fun.
Russell was unranked in last year's preseason rankings, and remain so for several weeks into last season. I was nearly alone in calling for Russell to be ranked after they nearly beat Ashland Blazer on the road. I may be mistaken, but I don't think the Red Devils cracked the top 10 until after they beat Mason County the first time, and then they barely broke in. I think after losing to a tough Portsmouth West team at home, they may have actually dropped. As the season wears on, it becomes much easier to separate the wheat from the chaf. The fact that Russell was ranked where they deserved by the end of the year does nothing to dispel the perception that the early rankings seem to contain some regional bias. Hoosier Eagle, I agree that Russell was a little underranked early in the season, however, after the win against Mason, they moved from just out of the top 10 to #5, behind 1)breathitt, 2)Larue3)OCath4)Mason. I wouldn't call that barely breaking in..Should they have been higher?Possibly, I think you could make a good point for the top 3 being ahead of them at that time and even Mason..even though they won a close game with them, many felt the Mason win over Rockcastle was still more impressive than the loss Russell had to Ashland..i was one of them, but, rest assured, they weren't taken lightly after that point..Also, even after the loss to Portsmouth, they remained in the #5 slot..Lloyd hovered in the #6 to #8 range most of the year, with #5 being there highest ytd ranking and that was prior to the Russell/Mason game..i don't see where theres any validity to a NKY bias as far as Russell was concerned..

I was wondering when someone was going to mention E.Jessamine...

3a fan rankings for fun.
I think Rockcastle lost a ton from last year and Boyd has alot coming back..In addition, the 18-0 shutout victory over Belfry is alot more impressive than the Larue victory by the Rocks... As far as Cov Cath goes, they're probably right up there with all of the top 10, but, imo, 0-2 and Boone Co. ain't that strong.. The St X loss was no shame, but, I think the GCL teams are a little overhyped by everyone...

3a fan rankings for fun.
I also think E.Jessamine deserves some consideration...They could be a real sleeper in 3a this year, but, still a little out of the top 10..

3a fan rankings for fun.
1t)Paducah Tilghman 1t)Boyle Co. 3)Highlands 4)Mason Co 5)Hopkinsville 6)Lex Catholic 7)Bowling Green 8)Bell Co. 9)Lawrence Co. 10)Boyd Co. Oldham definately drops out after that BG thrashing and IMO, Rockcastle still has to prove themselves against a decent opponent to be ahead of the 10 in there. Cov Catholic is lurking but are 0-2 and the loss to Boone knocks them out, at least for now...

Which class was stronger last year, 1A or 2A?
A similar thread was recently out there about 2a not getting any respect and , in my opinion, 2a was stronger last year..Yes, 1a had Mayfield, Danville and Beechwood at the top, but, after that, I think any of the top 10 teams in 2a would have beaten the next 7 teams in 1a...so, from that standpoint, imo, 1a was top heavy while 2a had many more good teams capable of upsetting the better teams ... depth was much better...

Best Mayfield Team ????
GURU. THAT GAME WAS NO INDICATION OF WHAT TYPE TEAM MAYFIELD HAD THAT YEAR..I CAN'T EXPLAIN IT..THEY SIMPLY CAME OUT FLAT AND MIDDLESBORO TOOK IT RIGHT AT THEM...I DON'T AGREE IT COULD HAVE GOTTEN UGLY THOUGH BECAUSE MAYFIELD PLAYED PRETTY WELL IN THE SECOND HALF , AT LEAST, FROM THE 20 TO THE 20 BUT COULD ONLY PUSH ACROSS 1 SCORE AND MIDDLESBORO WAS SHUT DOWN IN THE 2ND HALF PRETTY WELL.. THE CSORE ENDED UP 27-7 I THINK AND IT WAS 20 ZIP AT THE HALF...JUST 1 OF THOSE GAMES AND GIVE MIDDLESBORO SOME CREDIT..THEY HAD AN OUTSTANDING TEAM THAT YEAR AS WELL AND GOT HOT AT THE RIGHT TIME...

Best Mayfield Team ????
I think the 77 team was the deepest team and had a better line with Taylor and Sutherland manning the right side and opening up holes big enough for Vince Dawson to run through then the 78 team, plus they had all those guys who were also on that team as juniors..They won big every game with exception to Brentwood Academy and had a close call with 5a ill Powerhouse east st.louis and the rc thomas led corbin team who was extremely tough.. i'd rank them slightly ahead of the 78 team and then put the 95 team right there in a close 3rd...those guys could really execute and run the ball with starks and bright and had 1 heck of a swarming defense as well.. I think the 98 team was the best not to have won it..They came into the Middlesboro game undefeated and i think were let down when Beechwood got knocked out by the yellowjackets in the semis...that year, all the discussion was about mfd/beechwwood,much like it is this year with danville/mfd...still, they were a very strong group, especially defensively...i'd put them a little ahead of the 76 team as far as best not to have won it all...that team had a great running game with David Fisher and Gaylon wilson and had a great defense led by the 2 Raymond brothers, plus they had a great jr and soph class which suplied them with alot of depth... This years team has a ways to go to be mentioned with all the alltime great ones, but , i will say this..their line stacks up pretty well with any and their defense may bend but rarely breaks..They need to improve on the offensive side, both running and passing and if they can do that and get by danville and win it all, i'd put them right in the mix with the others..thats a big if but its not out of the question..

Best Mayfield Team ????
It was the 77 team that beat East St.Louis...keep in mind the 77 season was the class that graduated in 78. I dont recall the 77 team playing Memphis Douglas..That team got beat By Nashville Brentwood Acedemy in the opening game of the year and then went undefeated the rest of the way...the 78 team may have played douglas...that was the team that went undefeated and beat somerset in the finals...
