  1. I'm no lawyer and don't want to be, but the injunction essentially means no further action can be taken -- in this case, the tournament can't continue -- until the referee's complaint is ruled on by a judge. Once he convinced a judge to issue the injuction, to play the game in violation of that injunction would be contempt of court. I'd think it would carry some sort of criminal penalty, and at the very least you'd run the risk of having to replay the game after the court hearing.
  2. I second that hats off to Barbourville and Dinky Phipps, a good coach and a good guy. And congratulations to Steve Wright and the Cards.

  4. 7th Region. Hands down. Nothing that happened in the other 15 games could be as surprising as that fiasco.
  5. Boyle grinds out another win to reach the regional finals vs. Southwestern. McCreary trailed 15-4 after one quarter, got back in the game in the second and led by three in the third before Boyle recovered. Staed led Boyle with 15 points, Phillips led McCreary with 12.
  6. The sportsmanship statements are specific to players and coaches. However, fans and others are addressed in a KHSAA by-law, which reads in part: "It is the clear obligation of principals, coaches, faculty members, boards of education, and all official representatives of member schools to practice the highest principles of sportsmanship and the ethics of competition in all interscholastic relationships with fans, officials, players, coaches, official representatives of member schools, and the general public. The Commissioner and the Board of Control shall have the full authority to suspend the coach, student, or any member school whose representatives may be convicted on competent evidence of the violation of this obligation. Any violation of this rule in any interscholastic contest shall be immediately reported to the Commissioner by the principal(s) of the school(s) involved, and by the game officials who work in the contest." Of course, pretty much everything is open to interpretation by school officials or game officials.
  7. If the finals were pushed back a week, wouldn't the KHSAA just use the same format it used this year? (I'm not in favor of that, but I think they liked it.) I'm not sure this will be a special circumstance in the future. In the world of 12-game college schedules, I'd think UofL should be hosting a game on this weekend every other year.
  8. Bottom line, the KHSAA isn't taking these games anywhere. They won't play in a stadium without turf, and in the current format they shouldn't. And UofL and Louisville's sports commission will probably do everything they can to work through this year's problem. This story from the C-J last week (http://www.courier-journal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060209/SPORTS05/602090446/1031) would seem to indicate they aren't seriously thinking about going elsewhere. This didn't surprise the KHSAA when UofL's schedule came out this week; they already knew this was coming. UofL has primary tenant status at the stadium, so its games take priority over anything and everything else held there, just as UK basketball games do at Rupp Arena. The KHSAA always reworks its Sweet 16 schedule in those years when UK hosts NCAA tournament games, and they'll do the same at UofL every other year if the football schedule holds.
  9. It's the 12th, so they're a contender. And maybe a year before many expected, because they're a young team. It'd be a surprise to many if they won, but they've advance beyond darkhorse status.
  10. As long as there's even one working school bus left in Laurel County that can get the SL team to the game — or failing that, even a good, sturdy hay wagon — put me down for a no.
  11. I was just impatient. I just logged on and didn't want to read the whole thread.

  16. Somerset plays Harrodsburg for the title Sat. night. Somerset won 51-48, Harrodsburg won 94-91.
  17. Lincoln's losses within the 12th are to EJ, Pulaski and Boyle, which held Lincoln to 35 tonight.
  18. My understanding is if they can see it, they can 'T' it. I'm not an official, but I believe the wording of the rule says no dunking when officials "are present." If they're not standing on the court, they're probably in the wings on their way in, and I don't think refs are going to lurk behind a door or under the bleachers looking to nail kids for stuff like this. As long as the players can see that officials are present, I would think they could be subjects to T's. I've only seen players T'd up for dunking a couple of times in 20+ years, but it does happen.
  19. How much has J-Town fallen off from last year? I don't want to dimiinish CAL's accomplishment, but I saw both J-Town last year and CAL couldn't have done this then.
  20. There's been a lot of times you could say that about the 12th in the last 15 years or so. It's not the worst region in the state at the top, but there aren't more than 2 or 3 below it. The regional tourney, however, will be great fun because just about anybody that can get to the regional will have a shot to win it.
  21. I saw a game last year in the Louisville area where the players were dunking all over the place in warmups, and as the officials came out on the floor they blew their whistles several times just to make sure everybody knew they were there and it was time to knock it off. I had never seen that before and thought it was interesting, because the players couldn't help but know the refs were there.
  22. Thanks. I always thought it was fascinating (and probably a little dangerous) that a player throwing the ball inbounds from the sideline couldn't get her entire foot out of bounds because there was so little room between the line and the first row.
