  1. Should have been 3 straight, but 2 state championships is pretty darn impressive too! Do you think Emma checked her scorecard really, really carefully? To win after just returning from Scotland is impressive in itself. I'd have jet lag for a month.
  2. I'm a little surprised Union County was placed in the 2nd District and not the 1st. Especially considering that Reidland is going bye-bye in a year or two. I also thought Butler County might end up in the 2nd District (with Union in the 1st). I'm not sure it's a big issue either way, just not what I expected.
  3. I don't have any other info as to which schools are going to be allowed to play up. I think the KHSAA was pretty adamant about not letting very many schools change classes. You really had to prove a geographic hardship.
  4. I heard that 3 schools were allowed to play up and that none of them were in the western end of the state. I can't confirm any of that, but it came from a pretty good source.
  5. Congrats to Webster on winning three games so far this season, but Tilghman rolls in this one.
  6. Did Crittenden play up to try to avoid Murray and Heath? I think they were both strong back then. I'm pretty sure Mayfield was playing up in 2A at the time.
  7. Crittenden was 3A? I didn't realize that. I always thought they were 1A when Caldwell played them.
  8. And, just for the record, Caldwell and Crittenden have never been district adversaries. Caldwell has always been in Class 2A and Crittenden has always been in 1A. At least until next year!
  9. This game could probably go two touchdowns either way. Caldwell has played the tougher schedule, but last week's blowout loss to Lone Oak likely didn't do much for the Caldwell psyche. Crittenden has had it pretty easy the last two weeks with McLean and Webster. There's only one common opponent — Hopkins Central. Crittenden had to come from behind to beat the Storm while Caldwell built a big lead then had to hold on late. The Tigers will probably need all of their home-field advantage to pull out the win. But I'll take the Tigers 33-29.
  10. According to the best information I could find, Ken Barrett coached the Russellville Panthers 23 seasons, compiling a 171-86 record. His overall record was listed at 246-153. Barrett also coached at Trigg County and Marshall County. He won three state championships at Russellville. Barrett played for Butler High School in Princeton in the late 1940s.
  11. Between the 43-minute lightning delay and Calloway throwing the ball 52 times (with 30 incompletions), the game got over about 11:15 p.m.
  12. Brandon Sigler rushed for 99 yards and 2 TDs, returned a kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown after Calloway had gone up 14-12 in the third quarter, and returned an interception 38 yards for a score in the second quarter. He also handled kickoffs, returned kickoffs and punts and punted — one punt went 70 yards — and took several snaps at quarterback. Think I also saw him mopping up the locker room after the game.
  13. Pass knocked down on final play. FINAL: Crittenden County 31, Lou. Holy Cross 27.
  14. Crittenden penalized for facemask as time expires. Holy Cross gets one more play from the Rocket 12.
  15. Crittenden gets a 1-yard TD run from Berry with 0:32 to play. Crittenden leads 31-27.
  16. Holy Cross returns a punt 80-yards for a score. Extra point blocked. But Holy Cross leads 27-24 with 3:52 to play.
  17. Crittenden goes back up on a 12-yard TD run by Freeman with 8:43 left in the game. Extra point failed. Crittenden 24, Holy Cross 21
  18. I believe I've spotted Ft. Campbell's weakness. When they get up by 40 or more they tend to lose their focus a little bit.
  19. Or maybe Caldwell wishes it was playing the 1998 Falcons.
  20. I think Lyon County tried to start a youth league years ago, but just couldn't generate enough interest. If a kid at Lyon really, really, really wants to play football, he usually ends up at Caldwell County, best I can tell. Financially, I think it would be difficult for a small school to start a football program from scratch. Seeing the small crowds at some places, I wonder how they cover their expenses now.
  21. Weather forecast looks good for Friday, so that will probably make it tough on the Tigers.
  22. Caldwell actually won three games in 1985. They beat Webster County in addition to Crittenden and Mayfield. I think the Crittenden and Mayfield games were both wet and nasty that year too! The Tigers seem to be excellent mudders.
  23. I'm going to go out on a limb and predict Christian and Henderson in the final.
  24. Just for fun, let's look at the stats before we call Caldwell a "passing" team. The Tigers have thrown the ball 200 times for 1,519 yards and 16 TDs this season. Caldwell has run the ball 247 times for 1,482 yards and 17 TDs this year. That's over 55 percent runs. Even if you throw out the numbers in two blowouts (vs. Reidland and Webster County when the Tigers ran more than usual in the second half) Caldwell is still running the ball over 50 percent of the time. It's true Caldwell runs the Tony Franklin spread offense, but it's a mistake to think that all teams that run that offense throw the ball 75 percent of the time (although some do throw it more than others). Caldwell strives for balance in its attack. Most of its passing game is screens and swing passes. The Tigers will take an occasional shot down the field, but they are hardly a run-and-shoot offense. All that being said, I think it will be tough for Caldwell to go to Mayfield and win now that the Cardinals seem to have their act together. However, if Caldwell takes care of the ball and gets some timely stops or takeaways, it could be interesting. The scary part about playing Mayfield late in the year is you usually get a physical contest, which can leave you banged up for the playoffs. I'm not sure that didn't hurt Caldwell last year when it was upset by Heath after losing to Mayfield in the last game of the regular season. Since I'm a big homer I'm going with Caldwell 28-21.
  25. Will Barnes, Caldwell County 6-foot, 155, senior QB Passed for 314 yards and seven touchdowns —both school records — all in the first half of Caldwell's 76-7 win over Reidland. Completed 12 of 15 passes with no interceptions.
