  2. Good points by all but I think a zone can be effective IF you use it the right way and capitalize on the oppenent's weakness. I have seen better teams use different types of zones to throw off another team and it has worked. Although I agree man defense puts more pressure on the offense, sometimes it doesn't hurt to try a specific zone to see how the team reacts to it. But apparently man defense did not work for Brossart (I was not at the game so I can't comment on it too much) so they could have seen IF a zone would have done better. As a coach you HAVE to be flexible and be willing to try something different if what you are doing is NOT working. Don't know if that was the case against Paris but from what someone else wrote, it sounds like the man defense was questionable. It's all water under the bridge now anyway.
  3. really thought this game might be a little closer but apparently Brossart is not at the same level as Paris. Hasn't Paris won a lot of All 'A' regionals in a row. At one time I remember Brossart dominated that region. Looks like the tables are turned, at least for another year. I would guess Paris would be favored tomorrow against Bracken Co.? Haven't seen either on play but seems like Paris is playing well of late.
  4. Silver grove does not have the personal to compete against an established program like Deming. However, silver grove only has sophomores and freshman on the team with some even younger so basically it's a JV team. If they stay with the program, they could make some noise in the future.

  6. In all fairness to Notre Dame, they lost A LOT of their inside game with Drees and Dickman graduating. They cannot be replaced and the adjustment had to be difficult. Notre Dame has some good outside play but will with time make the adjustment and be ready when the end of the season comes. As long as they can get the #1 seed in their district, they should be ok for the regional. No time to panic because of that loss. And Boone could easily go into the regional as the runner-up and lose to a Notre Dame or Highlands. There's still a LONG way to go and I imagine things will become more clear in the next few weeks.

  10. St Pats and Brossart? Paris has everyone back from last year and should be the hands down favorite. I doubt Brossart will even make it to the finals, but I don't know the brackets for sure.

  15. just for future references - the second year of high school would be a sophOmore - you missed an 0. Not being cruel, just a note of reference
  16. I agree with your stats but isn't it all about who wins the ALL 'A'. I think this thread was started about how private schools have dominated it and regardless of your stats, public schools have won it more often. So, get off your high horse and just suck it up. Face it, private schools must be doing something right (and don't start the ole "recruiting" thread because most do NOT do that although I agree there are some, but don't bury your head in the sand and say that public schools don't recruit. Now that would be complete ignorous. Give it up for God's sake
  17. I think the 50/50 is WAY too generous. Those in the stands are at least 90% right and of course a select few are ALWAYS right and they will tell you so. If you did things their way, you would NEVER lose a game. The players win the games and the coaches lose the games and that's the way almost all of those people in the stands see it. Many will look like some of the horses in the Ky. Derby this weekend - a complete set of blinders where all they see if directly in front of them and nothing else. I think we even has some on this site. Chime right in "fellow know-it-alls" from the stands.
  18. As they say. "the grass always looks greener on the other side." Both of you who commented on JV coaches are so on the mark. And if the JV coach wants your job, they can sometimes even go behind your back and talk badly about you and make themselves look so caring and thoughtful. Unless you've been a head coach, you have NO idea the crap you have to put up with. So, is this the case at St. Pat's? I don't have any idea but those of us who have coached, have seen it happen a lot. And when the JV coach moves up they quickly find out you can't be "buddy-buddy" with the parents AND run the ship the way you want it run. The two are totally opposite. Like I once heard from a coach one time - "Give me a team of orphans and I'll win nearly every game." GET THE POINT!?
  19. For someone who added so much to the program, one would hope Coach Ormes would have been given better reasons than "to move in another direction." IMO, it WAS done because parents complained and will continue to complain because they knew eventually they will get their way. Kinda like blackmail - "You either get rid of him or my daughter is not going to play." The almighty dollar and parents have struck another win for their side. So coaches, if you are at St. Pat's you'd better do what the parents want you to do or you're history. And I know for a fact this is NOT unique to St.Pat's - it's happening everywhere. I'd love to see an administrator step up to the plate and tell these parents that if they don't like it, take their kid off the team and go somewhere else. I would applaud such a warrior. But many of these adminisitors go limp when pressed with the issues and could care less about the coach and all he's done. All those parents do is teach their kids that if you whine enough, eventually you will get your way. That's why we are riddled with people suing other people - NO ONE wants to take responsibility for their actions. And parents who complain? Do you think that maybe it might be you kids attitude or lack of talent that could be the issue? OF COURSE NOT! Just keep those blinders on so the only thing you see is what you want to see. I still back Jerry 100%.
  20. I'm sure someone out there knows the real truth but we may never know that because those (or THE PERSON) who made the decision will not own up to the fact. And I have seen other programs where the JV coach undermined the head coach and went behind their back - very unprofessional. I don't know if it happened in this case just stating I have seen it too often by a JV coach who wants the head coaches job. It's all water under the bridge now and we may never know the real truth behind it but the fact is Jerry Ormes elevated the program to respect and was very well resepcted by all the opponent coaches. And to leave the AD out of the loop throws a BIG SLAP in the face of Lex Turner. Did they assume that Lex would speak up for Jerry so they didn't inform him? In an essence - it was all handled VERY unprofessionally and I have no respect for the coward(s) who hid behind the cloak (hint hint).
  21. Would like to know where you got the information about "80% of this decision was from an evaluation of his players." I find that very difficult to believe and when is a basketball coaches job on the line because you have some players who were not happy with the outcome. Characteristically there will likely always be some players not happy, such as - not enough playing time, not patted on the back ALL the time, others getting more playing time ,etc, etc, etc. I know Jerry very well too and his coaching is steller. Sure, as coaches, we don't always make the right decisions, but that's expected. Regardless of what you say, I have to believe the "higher-ups" didn't do the research and did their normal "knee-jerk" reaction and tried to appease the minority who were complaining the loudest. Jerry is still one of the best coaches in the 10th region and that is so apparent when you look at where St. Pat's was BEFORE he came and how far they progressed. And as you can see from reading these posts, most people agree with that assessment.
  22. I understand your thinking and it may have been the priest (in charge) told the principal not to rehire Coach Ormes and the principal didn't have a choice, BUT that certainly does NOT make it right. And then NOT to even inform the AD at all? So that indicates that the Athletic Director has NO input on coaches - another bad choice. All in all, a good man was "let go" because a horses pa-tutt (to put it nicely) decided he was the "almighty" and could do whatever he please, regardless of any concerns by those truly affected (such as the coach and players). I have absolutley NO respect for people like that. Basically they are cowards and couldn't hold a flame to the character of people like Jerry Ormes. Jerry, you can stand tall and know that the majority of people know what a quality person you are and also realized you were railroaded by someone who knows NOTHING about coaching.
  23. And the reasoning behind this is what? To get a female to coach girls basketball? And what coaching experience does this person have? I know nothing of this person but would be interested to know how they came to this decision. I smell a rat!
  24. Another CLASSLESS act by someone in power at St. Pat's. As we have seen way too often - parents (normally it's just a few) complain and threaten to take their kids out of the school unless there is a coaching change. Since St. Pat's (like other local catholic schools) are so afraid of losing any students, they take the gutless way out and actually allow THE PARENTS to control the program - bad way to run a program. You don't get any classier than Coach Ormes or anyone who gets more out of their players. I have the highest respect for him and NO respect for the gutless person who made the decision. And I thought in catholic schools there were supposed to be good christian people but I have I've found those in administration are nothing short of the opposite. Such a shame to allow someone like Coach Ormes to be let go in such a fashion. I hope more comes to light about this but normally those "in charge" keep their mouhs shut because they can't realisticly justify their decision. A bad sad day for St. Pat's. They just lost not only a quality coach but more importantly a quality person. I have NO respect for whomever made the decision. Like I said to start this thread - TOTALLY CLASSLESS!
