  1. I'd rather he not; hate to see this thread turn into a CovCath football coach- like thread. I always felt it was best not to air out dirty laundry in public. If someone has a problem with some coach at Highlands, the principal and super have phone numbers. Use them.
  2. Congrats NCC. As others have mentioned, Pangallo and the Giesler boys played very well. Birds will be fine. They are all juniors and will have up and down games. That happens with younger players. There is a lot of work to be done, but fortunately there are a lot of games to be played before districts. Don't be surprised if you see a dramatically different team performance-wise from the Birds come the tournament. As for the coaching comments about Willie, I didn't see him get out coached at all. The guy's proven in the past he's an excellent coach and I'm sure he didn't leave his coaching abilities in the locker room for this game. And me, I love the football championship chants. :thumb:
  3. Thanks PepRock for clearing up my misunderstanding. For some reason I was under the impression that X and T had received in the past several talented kids that otherwise would have went to Central. Looks like the M schools will be the ones hurt by Central's rise.
  4. Great post Kissinger. Hopefully the more times that information gets posted, the more people realize that when it comes to rules like the ones mentioned in the initial post, its the schools that propose a large majority of them and approve all of them. So if folks have a beef, go sit in their superintendent's office and complain, and quit blaming the KHSAA. The rule change did not eliminate June practices; just 7 on 7s between schools. It did not eliminate 2 a days, it did not lengthen the dead period and it did not reduce the number of practices a team can have before the first game. some_guy, some unsolicited advise: don't believe in the future any info your source on the info you posted gives you in the future.
  5. Great post Golfer. I'm curious to know what you think is the cause for there not being as much football talent in Lex as there once was in Lex.
  6. Which brings to mind my long held and oft repeated point that the success of some programs is often the result of the failure of other schools. Had the Lexington publics put more emphasis on football and other sports, its possible that Lexington Catholic would have closed its doors by now and those great athletes at LexCath would be at the public schools. I don't know if its a myth, but I've heard the story repeated often that LexCath was close to closing years ago due to a lack of students. The man in charge, Father Beuter, realized that putting a top notch athletic program in place would attract tuition paying students because of the failure of the Fayette Public school system to adequately support and fund the athletic programs (the pulic school thinking may have been at the time: why worry about putting more resources into athletics, the kids have no other real options so they'll "eat what we are serving and like it too"). Which if true, opened the door for Lexington Catholic to use athletics as a drawing card, and is now biting the Lexington public schools athletic programs (particularly football) in the backside due to the loss of athletes. Again, I don't know if what I've heard is true or whether my "theory" is correct. It's sort of like the success of the private girls schools. For years the public schools looked at girls sports as a nuisance (even after Title IX) and did not put enough emphasis and resources into the girls sports. In the meanwhile, you have private all girl schools placing a heavy emphasis on their programs in part because its the right thing to do and in part because they know it will attract a lot of tuition paying girls that are serious about athletics. The privates saw the wave coming and paddled out to meet it. Now, they have became athletic machines and nothing succeeds success like success. Perhaps if the Lexington public system had not floundered in its support and those athletes at LexCath had went to Henry Clay, that would have put them over the top and enabled Henry Clay to beat Trinity. I for one am glad to see Louisville Central do well in football, but think if it continues to stay successful it may have some negative impact on T and X. Much of an impact? I doubt it. But even if just one or two superb athletes decide to attend Central and not choose T or X, in an occasional year that may mean the difference in some games.
  7. Any one have an update on the CCH coaching situation? I thought I'd heard that Coach Brossart wanted to know his fate prior to tomorrow. Oh, and the Birds should be pretty decent next year.
  8. Which shows the futility of these types of comparisons.
  9. I've read about environmentalists talk about the environment being mistreated because of the release of methane gas by cattle and manure runoffs polluting streams. Way before the white man stepped foot on this continent herds of bison, elk and deer were releasing methane gas and polluting streams with manure runoff. Do you think those bison herds "held it" when they crossed rivers (which sometimes took days to get the whole herd across)? I think not. Environmentalists are well meaning people, but a lot of them just aren't very realistic or pragmatic. One example: Environmentalists have done a "great" job stopping logging on federal lands out west. Well, trees eventually die or get knocked down in storms. If they aren't allowed to be removed (and in a lot of areas I'm told they are not because of the "natural" movement) or they aren't removed by the logging companies because it isn't cost efficient to just be able to remove downed trees, the down trees just lie there and become great fuel for fires. When lightning or some stupid human starts a fire, all that fuel generates a huge fire, which generates a lot of pollutants into the air, creating a lot more harm to the environment than the cutting of the trees would have created. That just doesn't seem pragmatic to me at all.
  10. For the kids would be a simple answer, wouldn't it?
  11. I think part of the reason is that Highlands doesn't keep defensive stats. Number 7 was number 58 until Roller went down. You're right that Laber didn't get the publicity he should have; but we know how important he was to winning state; what a great leader he was, and most importantly what a fine young man he is. Jim and Lupita are rightfully proud. :thumb:
  12. I'd be fine with that my friend. I'm about as simple of a person as you'd ever meet. :thumb:
  13. I've stayed out of this conversation for reasons that most understand and honestly wish it wasn't transpiring. The determination of what will happen with the cannon will NOT be influenced by what people on here want to happen. That is a fact. As NCBird mentioned, the fate of the cannon was sealed before the incident involving Steve. The insurance group (KSBIT) that insures the schools in Ky. had already decided that it was going to be looking into excluding coverage for cannons because of the liability involved and I am confident they will do so. Which means that any school that permits a cannon to be fired will have no insurance coverage on any claims or liabilities. No responsible school board could allow a cannon to be fired without liability coverage, and as much as I and others love the cannon, its symbolism and tradition, I would have to fully support the school board's decision to not permit the cannon to be fired any longer. I'd hope that most rational people would agree with that. It's been a great run, but as Reignman succinctly pointed out, the loss of the cannon will not break Highlands football program. Highlands football will be Highlands football without the cannon. 87Bird, neither this accident nor the misfire that happened earlier in the season were caused by age or condition of the cannon. I can assure you of that. Let's be done with the "discussion" of the future of the cannon. Use your time otherwise spent on debating whether the cannon should go or stay in praying for Steve's speedy and full recovery. It would be a much better use of everyone's time. Thanks.
  14. Come on weasie, I seriously doubt that T is worried about the possibility of losing to Highlands.
  15. Agree with your thinking on this. Sure there are some games out there that the fans would love to see and coaches/players would love to play, but unfortunately the economic realities of funding athletic programs trump that "love". As sticky well knows, Highlands athletics budget is not increasing and they are trying hard to do more with less. While Trinity has some wealthy boosters, I doubt the school is in a financial position to forego economic concerns when it comes to assembling their athletic schedules, particularly if they don't have to.
  16. To be honest with you, I don't know. I've only been in the weight room briefly in the last several years and really didn't pay much attention to what's in there, other than to know its a rather dingy, stuffy place. Sort of like a dungeon. Raider, I understand where you are coming from. But there are those people that pride themselves with doing the most with the least. And Crunch, I melted that 50 down years ago in retaliation.
  17. First they didn't "cancel a game" as it was never scheduled. Second, I don't know that gate revenue sharing was ever offered, so the concept raised by Weasel of the gate proceeds outweighing the transportation costs might not be applicable. Third I agree with you that the HHS administrators never factored in the extra gas money cost to its fans because I don't think the discussions ever got that far and if they had worked everything else out, then I doubt that the fans' gas cost probably would have been a deal breaker.
  18. I guess. Then again, what they have certainly works and it's hard to argue against that. I know from time to time folks have approached Dale about wanting to "upgrade" the weight room and I'm told Dale hasn't been interested in seeing money spent on the weight room. I guess he also feels that what they have works and it would make more sense to spend the money on more pressing athletic and academic needs for now. There still is a fundraising drive going on to finish much more needed improvements to the school buildings. If that's Dale's thinking, I have to agree with him. Athletics are great but academics are what will make our young men and women successful in their adult endeavors.
  19. I totally agree with you that it would be fun and I would love to see it happen. Heck, there would be no shame in losing to a school of Trinity's caliber, much like there was no shame in losing to Colerain this year. But it's one of those matchups that will only happen if it "works" for both schools (i.e. financially and common open dates), as neither school "needs" to play this game.
  20. I know from talking to Mueller that there were serious discussions with playing Trinity the next two years, but common open dates couldn't be worked out. I don't know if there were any discussions with X. Also keep in mind that at the time that the schedules were being finalized, gas prices were very high and Mueller had some pressure put on him to avoid a bunch of long travel games (which I think, but wasn't told this by Mueller, how the Beechwood game came about) to keep travel costs low. As folks in N. Ky are aware, Highlands like Beechwood and some other N. Ky schools gets hammered under the SEEK formula and there is not a lot of money laying around in the athletic budget. My guess is that the only week that Highlands could have played Trinity was either the game against Beechwood or one of the two games scheduled against Ryle. Don't know if Trinity had one of those three weeks open and whether they were willing to come to Highlands. We had already committed to play Manual in Louisville and I don't think Dale wanted the expense of another long bus trip to Louisville to play Trinity next year. And with Boone agreeing once again to start playing us again, I'm sure that Dale wasn't going to turn them down (admittedly Boone is not Trinity, and I don't mean that to be an insult to the Boone folks, but it is a traditionally talented football team in our back yard). With Boone having a lot of talent returning next year, they should be very good and a good challenge for the Birds.
  21. You were wrong in your understanding. Highlands did not pull out of the game to play Ryle a second time. They had agreed to play in 07 and 08. As for the 07 game, the agreement was that if they both didn't get in the Herbie, they would play one another. When both got in, that "satisfied" their 07 game. And of course, they played this year.
  22. Good lordy. You guys just won't leave this alone. Every one that I know realizes that T won't duck anyone. But for some reason some T people won't give Highlands the same respect and they think that Highlands is ducking them. In light of the fact that we've played some very good schools over the years (St. X, Elder, Colerain, etc), can one logically think we are ducking T? Just think about that for a minute and let it register. I know for a fact that Highlands and Trinity had serious discussions about playing next year. Unfortunately due to the lack of common open dates, it could not be done. Dale loves to play the best teams he can and he knows he will should have an extremely good team next year. I think if there was any practical way possible that we could meet next year, Dale would have done so. Enjoy 19. We are enjoying 18 and will again be shooting to tie it up next year, although I'm not one of those Highlands fans that are focused on having more state titles than Trinity. We are quite proud of what we have and are accomplishing, particularly in light of our size. I'm not sure that many T people respect our accomplishments, but I think a lot of other people in the Commonwealth do.
  23. Nah, he's entitled to his opinion even if it's wrong. You should know that by now as you've been in his position many, many times. :D:D
