Steve Gilmore, Wayne Breeden, Buddy Biggs and Jason Mays came from four different parts of the commonwealth to coach Ashland’s boys basketball team. For each of them, the Tomcats’ tradition and reputation for deeply rooted community involvement made impressions that preceded their own contributions to a program that began play in the 1919-20 season. “Like many basketball fans and coaches in Kentucky, I knew of the great tradition of the Ashland Tomcats, and it was something that we talked about a lot when I was there,” said Breeden, a Bullitt County native who coached Ashland from 1992-97. “I used to tell the guys, we wanted to be the caretakers of tradition. We didn’t start it, but we wanted to keep it going.” Ashland has kept it going all the way to the doorstep of a qualification no one else in Kentucky can claim. HUNTINGTON — The Ashland Tomcats couldn’t be tamed behind the 3-point line, connecting on 13 triples in a 76-58 win over the Spring Valley Timberwolves in a boys high school basketball game at Spring Valley High School Tuesday evening. The Tomcats (5-0) used a late bucket to tie the game at 15 late in the first quarter and scored nine of the next 11 points to take a lead they never surrendered. Spring Valley (0-1) used its size advantage in the first half to stay close. Corbin Page held down the paint and scored six of his 10 points in the first half, while CJ Meredith countered the post play with a trio of 3-pointers before halftime. Spring Valley trailed 34-29 at the break, but the Tomcats packed an extra man in the post in the second half and forced the Timberwolves to play outside-in. Ashland was excellent from the free throw line, shooting 19 of 22, and missed just one shot from the charity stripe in 10 second-quarter attempts to help extend the lead. Ashland coach Jason Mays dialed up the defensive pressure in the second half, relying on his players’ speed and ball awareness to help seal the victory. The Tomcats capitalized off Spring Valley offensive miscues, turning turnovers into 3-point shots and matching their total from the first half (five) in the opening minutes of the second half. All I know is that Ashland will play Greenup County in two weeks in the first round of the playoffs which is different from the way it's been the last few years. So if Ashland and Russell both win their 1st playoff game will they meet in the 2nd round of the playoffs? Why the change from playing teams in the other district in your region in the first two rounds? Who would the Ashland/Russell winner play in the 3rd round of the playoffs and where would the game be played?

Ashland moves to 8-1, and will travel out of state to play Spring Valley (WV) next weekend. Spring Valley has been in the championship game the last two years. They won two years ago and finished runner-up last year.
